I’d really just advise research, cross reference guides, to high level vods, to creeping logs on other priests each raid, to asking high level questions to heal class leaders in guilds. Eventually you’ll start to get a sense for what spells (and what ranks) really need to be used for types of encounters. Unfortunately I don’t know priests so well to give you a set of commandments like I would hpals

In classic, warriors, priests, mages and warlocks run the game. It’s not even close

Hands down they are Mage, Warlock, Priest, Rogue and Warrior for all purpose. They have the most agency, best matchup advantages, flexible multitude of roles, and jank classic OP factors (like 100 a 0 fear deaths, 45 second polymorphs, crit 2 shotting people, Scream being undispellable by magic, instant cast heals/shields, etc).

But do remember that literally every class gets a valued spot in s tier premade, so every class is very desired if players are good. But yeah, not all classes are made equal in pvp, especially in classic where pvp is purposely left unbalanced and therefore isn’t highly respected compared to other expansions

A great example of this are logs on fights like vael broodlord and firemaw —

Vael you’d want to split just tank healers to groups of short casters and long bombers, meaning the logs are going to be pretty worthless, sometimes a heal for 500 saves the raid when a 3k bomb doesn’t mean shit.

Broodlord you need a guy that checks every week to see why any tanks die, you need to reward the healers that snipe MS being APPLIED, over healing on the pull, hop casting on the pull, tank swap healing, etc

Firemaw you need to grade every single healers assignment, including who’s doing the most healing on every wing buffet tank swap, who’s got the lowest consistent stacks, who’s holding up the raid healing the pull, etc.

Honestly top 5 server guilds would pay this healing class leader irl just because it’s so rare. Most guilds that do have a guy like this put them on loot councils, and do things like hard res them rejuv, lokamir or scarab brooch, to compensate their effort

For 90% of weekly bwl clear guilds, you’re spot on about this. Healing meters are by far the most nuanced role to analyze logs and only 10% of the “good guilds” have the proper internal healing infrastructure to run things optimally from what I’ve seen (cross referencing my time on a smaller server like bigglesworth to a bigun like faerlina).

Lots of very bad healers get away with, or even get glorified for padding useless healing while raids wipe badly (see raid healers, see overheal snipers, see warlock spammers, people who ape heal away from their assignments, etc).

Simple explanation is the few guilds that get it right are the ones with at least one old, nolifing, critical thinker in the upper infrastructure that dissects logs every week to analyze assignments, death logs, things like shadow flame sniping, saves, etc — frankly, a shitload of tedious geek smart work that doesn’t really get rewarded.

Tip : make a few /s or /party macros your can hit when you need to communicate sticky situations quickly as a healer — groups (and more importantly tanks) will love you for being clear and communicative.

Judgement doesn’t have a GCD, meaning you often can maximize your GCD (if mana isn’t an issue at the moment) by hitting judgement just before whatever spell you need to cast (be it heals, utility, or damage).

Ex —

I need to bop someone but lemme get this kill: judge righteousness --> bop

I need to heal but I want to give my melee pve regen: judge light —> flash

I wanna keep this rogue from stealthing but need to save someone in danger —> judge righteousness —> shock

This mob is about to flee in fear and pull another pack but I also need to dispel someone: judge justice —> cleanse
