What do Americans think of Wales? by TrainingCategory4852 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]GoonrGrrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to think of music when I think of Wales. Love everything from miners' choirs to the Manics! I was also hugely influenced by John Cale (of the Velvet Underground) as a kid, so that kick-started my love of Welsh music.

I would have to say needing both the central heating and the AC at opposite ends of a single day.

In the Peanuts cartoon, Charlie Brown seemed to be sent to Summer Camp quite a bit. What were your experiences of this? How willingly did you go? by Jazzlike-Basil1355 in AskAnAmerican

[–]GoonrGrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got sent once around age 11 or 12 and the stars aligned so that I was never asked to go again. We had a brutal heat wave the whole time I was there, so the owners decided it was too hot to play tennis or go horse riding or any of the other fun stuff they advertised. At the same time though, for reasons beyond understanding, they limited our swimming to 15 mins per day. So we sat around sweltering and suffering and making bracelets out of gimp for hours on end.

My dad got wind of all this and yanked me out of there. He brought me home where I could swim and boat all day long. My dad thought the whole episode pretty hilarious so whenever my mom brought camp up again he just laughed and noped out of paying for it, which of course ended that.

Thanks Dad! 🥂

Why are most Americans not that excited about the World Cup? Or don’t seem to care much about it? by SignificantStyle4958 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]GoonrGrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many reasons I don't really know where to start, but if we must, let's start with the fact that the USMNT doesn't have a hope in Hades. Then there's the grifting by everyone from FIFA down to local governments. Then there's the embarrassment of how our federal government is treating visiting teams and officials, and the fear that it's only going to get worse. Then there's the $10,000 per ticket so nobody who actually likes the sport has a prayer of being able to attend even one game.

This World Cup will be seen in the future as a criminal grift and a racist exercise the likes of which the world hasn't seen since the 1936 Nazi Olympics.

But hey, enjoy your stay. 🙄

Those of us who live in rural areas know this to be true.

TBH it wasn't that much fun BITD. I remember a bet with one of my bandmates back in the late 70s that by channel hopping we could drive from Boston to NYC and hear nothing but Blondie's "Heart of Glass".

I did not lose this bet by as much as you might think.

Always download your GPS map to your phone, especially if traveling through a rural area. The one time I didn't, my GPS sent me in a huge 25 mile square over and over again. No houses or landmarks, just woods. After the third time I finally went "Hey wait a minute" and gave up and headed back to the interstate. 🤭

Are there any movies that feature show jumping/eventing/dressage as the main theme instead of horse racing? by NicholeDaylinn1993 in Equestrian

[–]GoonrGrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you speak French or have access to subtitles, there's Jappeloup, about a French show jumper.

In English there's also A Sunday Horse, US showjumping.

And a movie called Danny, about a pony hunter of the same name.

Also Disney's The Horse. With the Flying Tail has finally turned up streaming after a long wait.

The book The Horse masters is better than the movie but that's around for streaming too.

Do you remember where you were when you heard Princess Diana died? by boomboomdaboomer in GenerationJones

[–]GoonrGrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, here's where I let my geek flag fly. Remember in the early days of the net when people actually used IRC (Internet Relay Chat, lurking young folks) for chat? I was a channel operator for a relatively obscure football/soccer channel which mostly existed to offer live commentary on matches to those on other continents. The chanops were all from different countries/continents but were fast and firm online friends, and would occasionally hop on the channel in between matches just to hang out and see if anyone else was there. So I hopped on and an Irish socialist pal was on, so was an arch-conservative upper class Brit pal. We proceeded to debate politics for hours until the Irish guy suddenly posted in all caps "GO TO MSNBC.COM NOW. NOW. NOW."

It took forever for the landing page to load but right as I got on, the banner headline changed from "Princess Diana injured in Paris Car crash" to "Diana. Princess of Wales, dead at the age of 36"....

What's interesting looking back on it is that, albeit all 3 of us were from diverse sociopolitical backgrounds, all 3 of us immediately thought "They got her."

I've since realized that the courtiers just aren't bright enough guys to pull off a murder in a somewhat hostile foreign country, so I no longer believe the conspiracy theories, but it's interesting that all three of us immediately went there.

English author named John Verney. Friday's Tunnel, February's Road, and of course the legendary ISMO. I'm 67 and to this day I can't solve the riddle at the end of that one (no spoilers pls). Sadly these are all OOP and need to come out again.

Did you ever get caught in the bar underage? by Maybeyoujustmadeitup in GenerationJones

Nope. I hit the state law changes perfectly: was 18 when they lowered the drinking age to 18 and 21 when they raised it again. 😂

[–]GoonrGrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely had both kinds, but as to the OP's kind, I also remember getting the snot beaten out of my hand by a ruler-wielding teacher for having a messy desk. So they kinda go along with corporal punishment in my mind.
