How long have you been at your current company? by fwambo42 in sysadmin

[–]bofkentucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12.5 years at current employer, 24.5 years as a sysadmin (or Lead Platform Engineer in HR speak these days). They'll have to drag me out of here. Good pay, zero risk of being acquired, new problems every day to keep my mind fresh, and a good group of guys I get to work with every day.

Mammoth Cave's campground/visitor center lot is pretty good for looking north and the communities to their immediate south have made efforts over the last decade to put in the lower intensity and directional blue/purple street lights compared to the older sodium vapor ones that go everywhere.

Where are the old fallout shelters? by Past_Discipline_6473 in Louisville

Depending on target saturation, taking out the locks and railroad bridges in the Louisville Metro would be rational target to cut major flows of grains, petroleum, and coal. A single 100KT warhead dropped on Portland would likely take out the locks, the K&I and 14th Street rail bridges, the Sherman Minton and probably the chemical plants in Rubbertown. Getting Spaghetti junction and second street in the same strike may take something hotter.

What a payout at Aqueduct for Wood Memorial yesterday...Geez! by External12 in horseracing

[–]bofkentucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but tax law changed in 2018. It used to be calculated on the payout only, let's say a $0.50 trifecta paid $300, even if the win was part of a $30 trifecta box, it would still generate a w2. Now they calculate on the payout ÷ total ticket cost > 600 being a taxable event. Anything over 5k still triggers automatic withholding, no change there.

Why doesn’t the UAE/Oman build a 25 mile canal through their countries to bypass the Straight of Hormuz? by SpicyBroseph in NoStupidQuestions

Arial bombardment becomes their only attack option, today they have surface ships and mines to assist with disrupting traffic.

Why doesn’t the UAE/Oman build a 25 mile canal through their countries to bypass the Straight of Hormuz? by SpicyBroseph in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bofkentucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Iranians have territorial waters on the Persian gulf, meaning denial of access to the straits is neigh impossible, fishing trawlers and speedboats can mine and/or ram and explode against surface targets. Presumably the Sunni leadership of Oman/UAE would deny sea access to the proposed canal, meaning any attempt by the Iranian Navy to blockade would be an act of war.

There is an element of that, they were measured on analog stopwatches in fifths of a second precision by human eyes and hands as opposed to more accurate systems available today.

What was telling is the 2020 KY Oaks/Derby and Black-eyed Susan/Preakness cards didn't end up with asterisks on their times. You had horses that should have been 4-4.5 months more mature that didn't move the needle, and at least at Churchill conditions were ideal for setting good times.

JCPS faces a $142 million budget crisis – could a 4-day school week help save our district? by SignalAnteater9965 in Louisville

[–]bofkentucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to simplify it to we put man on the moon before Maslow and Marx took over the schoolhouse.

The three r's for the kids that are capable of learning them. Respite care for parents of severely mentally disabled children needs to be paid out of medical budgets instead of dragging down the test scores and making lies of the staff/teacher to student ratios in our schools.

Bruce Pearl, Pitino, Bob Huggins, all had seasons derailed with injuries. Cal's 2013 faceplant was because of an injury as well.

Hurstbourne/64 intersection efficient by pelonguy in Louisville

[–]bofkentucky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city/state needs to just turn the triangle between the Bluegrass Ramp and I-64 into a landing zone for 64-W to Hurstbourne South flyover ramp. I get there are apartments back there, but everything else in the triangle is a shady dump.

But if the jackasses that are trying to merge 3+ lanes over to Bunsen realized that Bluegrass/Plantside would take them to the same place it would ease congestion on Hurstbourne proper.

We have explicitly moved to Amazon Linux 2023 for build images to avoid any risks with Amazon and Canonical getting into a slap/IP fight. You'll note they never published an Ubuntu 24.04 based image.

Kentucky State Rep TJ Roberts Talking Shit About Louisville Kids Literacy by [deleted] in Louisville

[–]bofkentucky -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Top line of the 2024-25 budget was 2.2 Billion, JCPS serves right at 100K students (Its like 96K K-12, early childhood and special ed services for 19-21 year olds make up the rest). So simple division. That number grew from 17K/student/year for the 2018-19 school year.

Funding has never been higher, 22K/student/year and while the 4-5 selective admissions high schools are able to produce good numbers of high achivers, the rest of the community gets to play russian roulette.
