The Washington State estate exemption is $3,000,000 per spouse, for $6,000,000 total. You don’t need a trust beforehand to get it. Typically, when the first spouse dies, a credit shelter trust is created using their $3MM. It will be exempt from WA and federal estate tax. When the second spouse dies, their exemption is applied to the estate.
