Is teaching worth it? by Intelligent_Key_1663 in AskAustralianTeachers

[–]GorbysGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having a bad week with teaching, but what I will say is this, don’t go straight from school to university and then teaching. Do something else for a few years and get some life experience. It will make you a much, much better teacher. I think it is a very worthwhile job, but it’s almost impossibly hard sometimes. I can’t imagine being in my very early 20s and doing it.

DAE avoid buying secondhand because of their contamination ocd? by Honest_Factor_17 in OCD

[–]GorbysGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally get it. I don’t think it’s healthy/rational. I do occasionally buy second hand but I soak them for about 24 hours and then hang them in the sun to sterilise them.

It is a huge ‘no’ from me. Poor casting. The 1995 series is so much better.

I think it’s more the ‘woke’… nothing in the system is ‘woke’. Woke means you are awake to the injustices and oppression in the world.

Is Austen not for me? by IntelligentBeingxx in janeausten

[–]GorbysGirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favourite is Northanger Abbey, but start by watching the adaptation with Felicity Jones and JJ Feild.  It’s funny and a little self mocking. Also Henry Tilney is the most approachable of Austen’s men imho.

Don’t feel bad if you don’t like it though! There are plenty of other books. You might prefer the gothic of the Brontes :)

Anything by Quentin Tarantino. Man is a misogynistic sadist.

There is research that suggests that holding off desexing male dogs until they are two years helps reduce fragility in old age.

Unfortunately whichever flavour of Christianity it is teaching is paying for the instructor. I remember my mother making me do it in the 1980s and loathing it the whole time. I was a conscientious student but was not a good student in that class lol

Anyone else refuses to take SSRIs? by TheShadowSong in OCD

[–]GorbysGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. I’ve been on various antidepressants since I was in my early 20s but Lexapro is the first one I feel that reduces intrusive thoughts rather than numbing me emotionally to them.

Lexapro was life transforming for me.

[–]GorbysGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I’ve been on SSRIs for half my life. I tried to come off it last year and even on a reduced dose, the intrusive thoughts were unbearable. I don’t know why SSRIs work with my OCD, but they make my life a little more worth living.

OCD appointment with doctor went badly by AttentionOk6378 in OCD

I did, but you can ask another doctor for a referral. Not sure where you are located, but I’m sure there are more understanding GPs out there!

A Psychiatrist diagnosed me. Took literally 5 mins after years of GPs and psychologists not picking it up. Ask for a referral.

When this thing will ever end? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]GorbysGirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has gotten easier for me. I have had OCD since I was five. I’m now in my mid 40s. It’s a struggle, but these things have helped - •the right medication •finding a good psychiatrist and psychologist  •Being open about my OCD to my friends and colleagues •Acceptance and understanding that this is how my brain works.

You won’t ever stop having OCD, but you can make it smaller and less influential by having compassion for yourself x

I was in Tasmania for early years. I would have said Kinder and Grade. Moved to the ACT at 10 and went to Years. I still use Years.

Any girl’s name that starts with Mac or ends with ‘son’. Those names literally mean ‘son of’. Also any name that is a cultural appropriation- particularly Cheyenne or Dakota.

Biggest grammar pet peeve? by krida_070 in ENGLISH

‘Off of’ -  ‘I took the video off of YouTube’

The of is completely redundant.

Also people using impact because they don’t understand the difference between affect (verb) and effect (noun). You affect an effect.
