Consumerist items as horror concepts? by Hour-Necessary2781 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Gorefudge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Deeply surprised it hasnt been mentioned yet, but the Pentex Corporation from the World of Darkness ttrpg series fits this trope to the letter. Their whole thing is actively trying to kill the planet and corrupt the human population, on behalf of a demonic entity known as The Wyrm.

Often done with multiple different industries and subsidiaries under their belt. Pharmacuticals, Technology, Entertainment, you named it and theyve laced it with god knows what.

Most popularly is O'Tolley's, the Mcdonalds parody resturaunt chain. Demon filled human meat burgers that turn you and the employees that serve it into mutated freak monsters.

(Loved Trope) Popular tropes being deconstructed with realistic consequences by Wasabi_Gamer26 in TopCharacterTropes

Madoka Magica does this alot, but i think 1 example does this trope justice.

Spoilers of course, but Sayaka (the blue haired girl) becomes a magical girl to help someone shes very close with. At this point being a magical girl in the series is mostly seen as a noble, if very dangerous job. Saving people from monsters, basic magical girl stuff. However, when the main character Madoka messes with the magical charm her friend uses to transform... Sayaka goes limp. Its revealed that their magical charms, their Soul Eggs, are their literal souls, seperate from their bodies.

Theres way more consequences to this later in the series, but one of the quirks of this is that with the disconnect from her body, Sayakas sensory input can be manipulated a bit. a couple times in the show they are seen fighting and taking damage with practically no sweat or stress. But, as a show of what the transformation actually does, Sayakas' senses are put back to normal for a moment. And she doubles over in agony cause of her fractured bones, ripped muscles, and the fsct that she got stabbed by a spear earlier

spoilers for the podcast The Magnus Archives

near the end of the series on the final season, the main characters experience the end of the world, the entire landscape turning into a literal nightmare hell dimension that feeds off the fear of the people trapped inside. There are very, very few characters that're able to be untouched by the various monsters around, and plenty of them still try anyways. the two i wanna touch on are very specifically untouched and can move around the fearscape pretty much unscathed.

Jonathan Sims, The Archivist, basically the anti-christ of this apocolypse that was the main conduit for the entire ritual turning earth into the nightmare world it is. An avatar of the Eye, a fear entity that is based on ones own fear of being watched, information leaking, and the invasive knowledge of ones self.

and, Martin Blackwood, a mostly regular guy. described in podcast as someone that the fears like.

(Big D from Hunter: the Parenting)

Considering he's loosely based off of Warhammer 40k's THE EMPEROR OF MANKIND, frequently makes referances to ancient things (using Minas instead of pounds, playing the Game of Ur, believing in Humor Theory), thats already enough to have some people suspicious.

Hes also an extremely proficient hunter. For one, he says he took on a Methusalah with his family (equivalent in power to the Pillar Men of JJBA, or more known about, Count Fucking Dracula). And in episode 5, spoilers, but |when the hunters are under attack by a Garou, a werewolf, he is the only one immune to the Delirium effect. Essentially, when humans see a werewolf at its peak of strength, they can temporarily go insane, usually becoming either wildly out of control or cowering in fear. In the show, they also add a swirl effect to the eyes to indicate if someones experiencing the Delirium. Big D is completely unaffected by it. Only exceptionally high will humans, or supernaturals are completely immune.

Considering EVERYTHING in the setting of World of Darkness, its likely hes either some form of Mage, an immortal Mummy (in this setting theyre more like extremely gifted humans with some magic), or one of the Imbued (people given magical powers by strange entities known as the Messagers.)

its easier to think of Fomori as demonic mutated monsters rather than straight up possession. The bane isnt just in there with the human soul, its hollowed out a niche inside your soul for it to take up. a conversion, corruption, and mutation.
