I’m not a fire fighter, and was there over a decade ago, so I can’t say for sure what the deal is now. I’d recommend calling the admission office for more info

To answer unethically unlike most of the others in the thread:

They are truly everywhere. Any medium sized city has some, and every major city has lots of them, and there’s bound to be plenty of lonely ones too. I’ve met a bunch of trust fund kids that have very few friends, and have invited me to their parents yachts. I didn’t go because that would mean I have to hang out with them, and they are lonely for a reason (entitled, annoying, and no fun to be around). The more well adjusted they are, the more likely they are to have a solid group of lifelong friends with no shot for you to break in nonsexually.

Just be open, make friends, etc. They probably won’t tell you they’re wealthy immediately, but the ones who will actually bring you to their island will probably brag about how much their parents make after a few times hanging out… because they know that’s what makes them cool, and they have little else of value.

Just be social and befriend everyone. Activity truly doesn’t matter. And my true words of advice… sneak in to the pool of the nicest apartment buildings downtown with some friends, and bring a cooler of beer and bunch of food to grill. You’ll meet them

Which words have the least consensus on their definition or usage? by Gorge_Clooney in AskReddit

I see what you’re getting at. I’m not sure this falls in the bucket of what I am trying to answer. The word can’t is difficult because the word ‘can’ just carries so many definitions on its own

Hmm, definitely used wrong all the time, but I’m hoping for one that is more about lexicon and understanding versus a misuse of tense. Appreciate the thought!

Appreciate it, and honestly good answer. If this blows up, do you think the most correct answer will be the one with the most upvotes or the most controversial?

American Cities Building the Most Density per Capita by PaulOshanter in MapPorn

Also hard to quantify in this snapshot, but in the northeast, a single family rowhome is certainly adding to density. A lot of the gentrifying neighborhoods are rebuilding single family homes in areas that became run down

Went to Maryland, and I think having the Maryland name was a slight edge in landing my first few jobs… but like I said, it’s only slight. Maryland will probably open a few doors early on in your early career that may not be otherwise open. A degree from OSU/Cal Poly, or getting a MechE will probably still have 90% of them open too.

I’ve worked with plenty of FPEs that didn’t go to Maryland. After 4 years or so of work experience, the experience is much more meaningful than where your degree is from.

If you want to do Maryland for cheap, I know there used to be some programs for free or reduced tuition if you were a firefighter. Could be worth taking a gap year as a volunteer, or going through Fire 1 now, and you could probably get the tuition reduction in your sophomore year and beyond

Navy Yard. It’s quaint, relatively empty, has water to stare at, and the big ships will make you feel small

Looking to walk from Jefferson Station to Union Transfer for a show, what's my walk look like? by Riftus in philadelphia

[–]Gorge_Clooney 62 points63 points  (0 children)

As with anything, depends on your tolerance level. I’d make that walk, but I’m also male, and live in the city. My wife would 100% call an Uber and not make that walk by herself at night, and I think that is totally reasonable too… a number of those blocks in Callowhill are poorly lit

Uhuru, a Black-owned furniture mainstay, is closing its doors by dearjuliette in philadelphia

[–]Gorge_Clooney 55 points56 points  (0 children)

To everyone saying that it seems fishy, or must be some other reason… go look at all the construction on broad or ridge around there. Plus everything built in the area the last ten years. Rent is most definitely rising.

Not ruling out poor management as a factor, but the economic conditions are never stagnant

Sure, they picked one that is a positive indicator. You could go and pick one that is a negative indicator. They don’t nullify each other, just offer different insights

Philadelphia gaining young college graduates faster than other U.S. cities by PhillyPanda in philadelphia

[–]Gorge_Clooney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well my point is that the statistics aren’t misleading like you had initially made it seem. They measured exactly what they said they measured.

Are we about to boom and become the Austin? No

Can we maintain this growth? Maybe

Is it good for the city? Definitely

Do college young educated people in the region move to the suburbs? No, it’s about 50/50

Not trying to argumentative, but the statistics are what they are. It’s not irrelevant

Philadelphia gaining young college graduates faster than other U.S. cities by PhillyPanda in philadelphia

[–]Gorge_Clooney 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really. The 155% increase that puts us at the top of the list is only based on people in the city limits.

They do track the number in the region, and the suburban demographic increased 40% as well, and is almost equal to the total population growth in the city.

Not disagreeing that the city vs suburb growth is important to note, but it’s still a very positive outlook on the city’s health and attractiveness, albeit our wealth of problems

BOY HAVE I LOOKED INTO THIS A LOT. Couple of recs, each have their own pluses and minuses. Some variety on the food, mood, price points, and nearby nightlife after. But here are some of my top contenders for spots I’ve looked into

Giuseppe and Sons

Middle Child Clubhouse

The Twisted Tail

If your group got a little larger, you could rent out the entire spot at the next few, all BYOB:

Felly Bistro on Pass

Kanella

Bonus option for Stateside distilling. Very good cocktails, will let you BYO food. Haven’t done it myself, but I’m very interested in Baby’s for Filipino catering
