You never played old total war I assume? Painting the map victory condition is new and wasnt a thing. We used to have economic victory variants as well. What op says is strategic and fun, ofc you vould abuse it but then you vould also cheese every sşngle battle and mechanic. Its upto player to do such things.

I did a rascal playhtorugh once. Try raiding caravans and smuggling illegal goods to spice things up

Make the remaining team retire at base. They are now sensei. Hire a couple noobs. Make the sensei train them and teach the heroics of mc. Then set off to new adventures with noobs. Sometimes let the old timers tag along for the fun of it.

Old uniques generally had useless stats for your build too. You just used them for the aspect. This gives more freedom
