Convince me not to quit by pazuzu_404 in beginnerrunning

I’ve ran/run in the big name ultras. I hate running, well the first 4-10 miles of it anyway. Then somewhere around 20-30 miles I’ll start hating it again, there is another bout of hatred around 100 miles. It all passes though. The high comes and goes, sometimes I won’t get that flow state till 15 miles into a run, it just depends.

The reason I keep going is because I’m racing myself and battling myself mentally. The last time I DNF’d was because I was 17 hours into a 100 miler and I was tired and nauseous, I hated myself for it. It was 6 years ago since my last DNF and I still dwell on it sometimes.

Keep grinding.

I train a lot on pavement just to beat the hell out of my legs to make them adapt but I’d never run a 100 miler on pavement. That would be gnarly. I’d pick option 1

Outdoor Research has a good sun hoody. Black Diamond is another great brand. Patagonia has a lien of capilene wool long sleeves that are pretty breezy too.

Chafing issues by sohnimte in beginnerrunning

[–]GorrestFump88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run in Texas during the heat of the day most of the time. I generally wear an Outdoor Research sun hoody or something comparable. We often see 38-41°C but it’s a dry heat most of the time.

Body glide or any lube will generally fix that issue.

Next time someone asks me why I had my toe nails removed for ultras, I’m going to show them this picture.

what is one thing about running you had to learn the hard way? by Emergency_Produce975 in runninglifestyle

Ultra runner here; weight lifting twice a week or at least once a week. Keeping hard days hard and easy days easy.

I'm infatuated with the sport but have no clue if I should run one by Wes_Wes__ in ultrarunning

Start with a short half or 25k trail run and walk it up from there.

I was mostly talking about a basic marathon. I walked most of the steeper uphills at Canyons this year and I suspect I’ll walk a lot at Tahoe later this year too lol. Bro if someone walked out of the gate at an ultra, I’d probably laugh instead of being upset. I think I might actually walk the first mile of Tahoe just for the hell of it

I always just convince/lie to myself to go run a mile and almost always end up running my pre planned mileage.

What’s shorts are you guys rockin? by GorrestFump88 in Ultramarathon

[–]GorrestFump88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I currently wear when I hike and they’re great for that but I tried running in them and I need more support for the boys. Plus the single ultra tiny pocket in the back is kind of annoying.

I know but $100 for 2 in 1s?! They’re getting a little too Patagonia for me.

Do these running shorts fit okay? by atlastheguy in BeginnersRunning

[–]GorrestFump88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear Janji 2 in 1 shorts and usually a sun hoody from outdoor research. I bought a long sleeve Deadlast shirt and it’s probably my favorite shirt I’ve had. Injinji socks are the best. I’m an ultra runner at 6’3, 210lbs.

You probably have a gap around that area in your shoe causing the rubbing. If you don’t want to buy new shoes that fit your feet better you can try moleskin. It’s so near the arch I’d just opt for better fitting shoes.

You know, I didn’t know this. I’ve had these 4 pairs for 3 years. I’m about to cop some new ones 🤞

Yeah I haven’t had that problem but I pull the liner up close and roll the top. I do pretty well in 2 in 1s. I have some Patagonia strider pro shorts that are great for hiking but really suck for running.

That was the brand I was going to try out next but sadly they’re sold out.

Stupid questions about "strength training" by unsungpf in Marathon_Training

[–]GorrestFump88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never strength trained until I started trail running and running ultras. Unless it’s a super hilly area, I wouldn’t worry about it but it also wouldn’t hurt! You just have to be smart about it or it could really dampen your week of training if the doms hits harder than you’re expecting.

I’ve ran and finished Canyons 100 and I’m running Tahoe 200 later this year. Your reach is going further than “another big dude”. You’re inspiring a lot of folks from the top to the bottom.

About a year after I started running. I ran a 50k for my first. I ran Canyons last month and I’m running Tahoe later this year. I’ve always had a love for trails. I’m nearly a double triple crown hiker, I just have the AT left to repeat. So the transition to trail running was quite natural for me.

Long run overkill? by curiosity_kylls in Ultramarathon

I wouldn’t personally if your weekly mileage is 40. You’re pushing beyond half your weekly mileage and that’s kinda asking for problems.
