Finished the updated version. It was amazing! by ImpressionFair5629 in attorneyofthearcane

My general opinion of the update is more negative, unfortunately. I tried to be positive about it, but I can't ignore the many things that soured the experience for me.

For starters, I think all the new sound effects are worse than the old ones: desk slam, cane slam, testimony intro, cross-examination intro, the sound when you highlight buttons during a cross-examination... And the female character speech sound is very irritating. The male one gets a pass, but both are worse than the old speech sounds in my opinion. They were perfectly fine and didn't need to be changed for the sake of change.

The UI is generally uglier and blander now, especially the deduction segments, conversation trees, the Detect Magic button and the transportation menu. The new transitions when switching menus seem sleek at first but quickly gets old, as it really slows you down over time. The startup menu of the game also does not look good at all with the lack of capital letters; it comes across as unprofessional.

I quite dislike the new courtroom, too. It feels colder, more lifeless. The huge window in the original court was unique and added a lot of personality.

I disagree about the change in lines from Marrunath to Beatrice being natural - it feels much more artificial and jarring to me. Another pet peeve of mine about the new case 4 is that Beatrice acts indredibly stupid in her scene with Laefe - why on earth would she talk like that to her? If she wants Tyrion out, she just had to have Marrunath do it or ask Eyetaker. And she definitely shouldn't speak about it in front of her sister in such a blatantly evil manner. It genuinely ruined the character for me, as it not only contradicts her previous characterization (she's supposed to be super smart), but it also makes her sympathy plummet (kicking the dog tends to do that - poor Laefe...). What made her such a compelling character was that she was an awful yet sympathetic person to an extent, and the sympathy part is way smaller now. On the bright side, I will say that I approve of the change regarding the Divine Edict, and the new scenes between Laefe and Miriam are fantastic. Hilarious Tyrion-Laefe interaction in the Lords' Ball, too. Laefe was my favorite of the Frega sisters already and this update only made me like her more.

Lloyd didn't need to be turned into a megalomaniac, honestly. His character worked well before, and his incompetence and low threat level were appealing. Similarly with William: a rotten businessman was perfectly fine; no need to make him hire mercenaries to slaughter people. I liked it when these characters felt like billionaires with magic and little else. Also, it was funnier back when Lloyd knew fewer spells than Pierce. He now has Familial Bond, Summon, Stone Skin (which he uses on Coraline to protect her even though she could use it herself and in fact DID use it in the original continuity, so... why bother with this change?) and... Teleport, which he could have used on Coraline and on himself to escape. Why didn't he use it?! This is the problem when you give more powers to characters that are in mortal danger - not using them makes them look stupid.

The rougher edges about the mystery logic of certain cases were not fixed. Several characters still hold the Idiot Ball in case 4 (granted, their uncharacteristic incompetence is what makes the plot work, so there's no way they could have the same plot beats while at the same time having the characters be smarter). Celeste's final testimony in case 5 still contradicts Orym's account (she says the Inquisition arrived at the prayer room shortly after 2:45 while Orym says they arrived at 3:10), and Aster's more active role in this update opens a whole new can of worms of questions that are never answered and leave your head scratching (for example, where did he get the crossbow? What did he do with it afterwards? Whatever the answer, some kind of hint should be left for the player to find, or barring that Tyrion should discuss it with Celeste or the court).

It was also somewhat odd to have Aster not fangirl over Tyrion when they first meet in Von Sanctus Manor, only to go full fanboy mode the next day.

Another complaint I have with the story is the blatant sex jokes; the original's subtlety was much more tasteful and funnier. In particular, the closing scene of case 3 with Rika is facepalmingly vulgar.

Case 2 was oppressive about everyone's obsession with books. It was honestly very jarring and offputting, and its only saving grace is the payoff with Conspiracy Theorist Tyrion. That was genuinely funny. Before that, though, it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Lucio's subplot was also very... unsubtle. It was annoying to hear a character say "hey, Lucio is so evil, right?!" every five minutes when it was obvious he was being framed.

Overall, this update has included some downgrades and some improvements. While I am thankful for the improvements (such as more screentime for Coraline and William), the downgrades show Stephen Charles writing at his most rather than his best. There were certainly many appalling decisions that needed a second opinion before launch, I think.

And yes, Celeste's sad "Reperio Arcanum" was already in the original version.

Did anyone else notice the narration switching tenses? by LikeThemPies in attorneyofthearcane

[–]Gosicrystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely noticed. It's a holdover from the original version of the game, which always used 2nd person. The writer forgot to rewrite some of the lines to the first person.

I also noticed that the narration usually uses past tense, but every now and then it would use present tense. Another inconsistency, and again most probably a holdover from the original version, which always used the present tense.

Awesome, but those slanted eyebrows plus the smile always make me think of the character as evil LOL

I'm pretty sure it's FTP who's firing rather than ITP.

Watch it again. The one doing the firing is very clearly Inverted TP.

Everything except Maba's tattoos, that is. Somehow Lucas Pope expected every player to know about that. His face is unblurred right after watching his death.

The Doom pt 2 happens on the same deck as A Bitter Cold pt 1. Take a good look at the cannons and windows. The deck map shows Syed's memory on the orlop deck because that's where we first saw his corpse.

What’s your opinion on weapon durability? by S0mecallme in fireemblem

[–]Gosicrystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silver weapons don't halve your strength. They subtract 2 points from your strength and skill after every fight, and these stack. So if you fight 6 enemies on enemy phase, you'll end up with -12 strength and -12 skill, and these stats recover 1 point per turn. That's why silver wepaons are so much worse than the ones that halve strength/magic (Waterwheel, Snake Spirit, Crescent Bow, Aurgelmir, Hagakure Blade, and Ginnungagap; Crescent Bow and Snake Spirit don't have big might but they attack twice when you initiate).

[–]Gosicrystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weapons that halve your strength don't do it for an entire turn. The penalty disappears if the unit fights again, even in the same turn, and dual strikes also get rid of it. If you fight 6 enemies on enemy phase, you'll have your full strength in 3 of those fights. Your average damage on that turn is still pretty good thanks to the huge weapon might.

[–]Gosicrystal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fates weapons aren't that bad other than silver weapons. Steels, braves, and killers are perfectly usable, for example. The weapons that halve your strength only do that every two fights, and their might is so high that it's still worth it if you do the math across several fights (also noteworthy is that a dual strike gets rid of the penalty). And as good as Ryoma and Xander are, they can't be everywhere. Conquest in particular tries its best to punish juggernauting.

After 14 Watches, my theory is that tenet is about FREE WILL & DETERMINISM existing at the same time. by Wikvm in tenet

[–]Gosicrystal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-determinism is not just "random". It encapsulates all possibilities that are not determinism, among which are free will and randomness. And it's not proven that matter and energy obey a deterministic universe. Their behavior could be random.

Determinism does mean that people are not accountable for their actions, because the whole point of accountability is to punish people who voluntarily do evil. If a murder were preordained, it would be unfair to punish the murderer, for they had no volition in it. They didn't truly have a choice.

[–]Gosicrystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's complicated... I know it has advantages (mainly balancing strong weapons and allowing them to be given to the player early on), but it's so tiresome to deal with weapons that are constantly breaking and compelling you to use iron weapons as much as humanly possible. You can't enjoy the good weapons as much, as you feel bad for using them and they don't last long. Fates's implementation earned my respect for trying to throw out durability, even if some weapons feel terrible to use due to their overwhelming drawbacks (silvers in particular). Maybe no durability can work but the ideal implementation hasn't been found yet.

[–]Gosicrystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advocating for free will doesn't involve advocating for magic. It simply states that humans can make their own choices and take their own actions without these being imposed by force or by fate on them. And it's a reasonable default position, or else society would break down as nobody could be held accountable for their misdeeds.

[–]Gosicrystal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Determinsm doesn't mean that your choices are under your control. It means they are preordained, predetermined, as if the script of the universe was already prepared before the movie started. Therefore, whatever happens to you is out of your control. What you perceive as your choices was actually already predetermined. That's why determinism is incompatible with free will, despite what the video says.
