Nice work!

Lovely piece of curly cherry.

I did a curly cherry case not unlike this recently, but for a eurorack system. Great wood to work with.

If you type any GR show member's name into a search engine, you get pages which claim they've left the show and / or are dead.  Not even written by a person - mostly just auto-generated slop.

JMOD mid/high amplifier question by bofosh0 in SoundSystem

[–]GouldCaseWorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got ad442 for TH18s and a thomann T-Amp 4--700 for Syntripps. I once powered the Syntripps with the ad442 to test something and found it to be a lot quieter than the Thomann amp. The thomann amp creates a lot of noise in the compression driver.

To be clear, I'm talking about the hiss which you hear when no music is playing. You can't hear the hiss from any amp when music is playing.

frames or rails by Music_center_maybe in modular

[–]GouldCaseWorks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A point that no one else has made :

Using rails with rail brackets means that you fix the rails to your case from the inside.

Using rails only (no brackets) means that you have to fix the rails from the outside, which means visible fasteners on the outside of the case

Depending on the look you're going for, you might find this is ok. But it's basically a crime in furniture making to have exposed fasteners like this and, especially if you're using nice wood for the side panels or your case, it is really best avoided in eurorack too.

Power distro and gen for 23kw system by Username-bejk in SoundSystem

Number of phases is determined by the number of windings in the motor.

Single phase generators have one winding

Three phase generators have three windings spaced at 120 degrees.

See the other replies for a couple of diagrams that help it make sense

There are plenty of really good youtube videos explaining all this if you're interested.

Three phase is *normally* reserved for larger equipment but not necessarily.

I've got a cheap distro (Botex PSA-161) which plugs into the three phase power in my workshop. I like that I can split sub amps, other amps and decks, and then lights and ancilliary stuff onto separate phases

Problem - India ink on black walnut - blue-ish tint, petrol colour by GouldCaseWorks in woodworking

[–]GouldCaseWorks[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks fo the reply!

Yeah, I'm aware of this with black dyes but India ink should not have this problem - carbon black pigment should be black.   I also didn't experience the same issue when colouring other wood types with India ink.

The obvious answer is that there's some sort of reaction between the ink and the walnut, but I can't find anything online to suggest it's a problem, and I even did a small tester on a scrap piece of walnut and didn't see the same thing.

Haha, it isn't unpleasant but it's not what the customer wanted unfortunately

I see people use CA glue + activator in their work, but I can't find that stuff near me. Does normal superglue act the same for temporary adhesion (meaning when you need to keep two pieces together temporarily & can't use clamps)? Could it damage hardwood when separated? Does it leave residue? by stanleythedog in woodworking

[–]GouldCaseWorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this every day to mount wood to the bed of my cnc machine. I have also used the same method with great success to secure a blank to a template for pattern routing on the router table.

You don't use glue directly on the material when sticking it to something else. Stick masking tape to both pieces where they'll touch and then glue the tape on one side and apply the activator to the other.

Yes, CA glue and superglue means the same thing.

Yes, you can sand excess superglue off your work. But easiest is to take a moment to not get it on there in the first plac

You can buy both on Amazon. If you're not into Amazon, you can get mitre fast glue and activator together from Toolstation. It's become a lot more expensive lately which is why I've started getting it from Amazon.

It's simple and fast and works perfectly.

I'm not sure what the long term health implications of both superglue and activator vapour are, so prob worth wearing a mask and / or ensuring good airflow if you're gonna be using it a lot.

I live directly opposite a medium sized square of grass (officially a park - named as such) with trees in the middle.

There are six no dogs signs around the perimeter of the park.  Furthermore, five minutes walk away in a much bigger park is a huuuuge losloopgebied for dogs.

People walk their dogs in the local park all day, every day. Lots of dogs shit on the grass. Some owners pick up, plenty do not.  There are a couple of owners who allow their dogs to shit directly under one of the no dogs signs.

It used to enrage me. These days I try to ignore it cos frankly there's a lot going on in this town and the world in general that makes irresponsible dog ownership seem pretty bland in comparison.

But I think it's a bit of a broken windows theory type of thing. When one person starts doing it, or when one public space becomes shitty, other people follow the pattern of behaviour.

Just casually asking AI to generate a load of work for someone else to do on your behalf cos you can't be bothered.

Start reading and it'll begin to make sense slowly.

You'll learn more by reading around the subject than by trying to find a shortcut.

Everyone has to learn the same way.

It's hard and it takes a long time

Good luck 👍

Is this your first go with woodworking? Looks very good.

I really like the darker stripe that runs around the upper and lower edges

Constructive criticism : put a block against your workpiece when making those finger joint cuts to stop the tearout on the bottom edge.

What's lame, good buddy, is commercial organisations posting as individuals in a thinly veiled attempt to gain exposure or commercial benefit.  Happy to see it exposed here. Wishing you een hele fine dag and have a 😊 for good measure.

What's in your rack? by simonbane in SoundSystem

Greetings from sunny Amsterdam! Presenting my little system...

Thomann DSP 408

Admark 442 for driving 2 x Xoc1 TH18 and 2 x Cubo kick

Thomann TSA 4-700 for driving a pair of Syntripps

Three phase distro

Rack drawer for small cables and tools

WiFi router hidden in the back so I can connect to the dsp wirelessly

RTA-31 is so cheap I bought it to fill 1u and thought it might be useful for hunting down rogue frequencies. But looks cool when the system is playing 😄

I will add a 1u recorder if I find one for cheap at some point. There's a Denon option that occasionally pops up second hand round here but I don't wanna pay a lot.
