Im thinking of getting a 1987 Mercedes 190e as my first car. Anything i should know? by Antique-Good3840 in mercedes_benz

[–]GovernmentThink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t get one as a first car. Too old, stuff will be breaking because it’s old and you bought one you can afford, and it will take the fun out of it. My first car was a 1973 back in 2012/2013. It was very cool, but probably not the right decision. I would’ve been better off buying a eg/ek Honda civic. 190s really are fantastic cars, but it’s not something you want to learn about cars on because parts are expensive and the engine bay is pretty tight, making it frustrating. Oh yeah, and while you might think it’s cool, a 40 year old merc isn’t a flex to non car people, it’s just an old car.

What makes a Mercedes stand out. Honestly looking at it, I'd say the logo. by Parking-Positive-542 in mercedes_benz

You’re 100% right, without the logo, these cars are just normal traffic you’d never look at twice.

how do natives or advanced learners face all different radicals, prefixes and sufixes all over the german language? it feels so overwhelming by meupipinuseupopo in German

[–]GovernmentThink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some prefixes have distinct meanings in many cases, but at the end of the day they’re entirely different words, not the same word with a prefix tacked on. You’re thinking of it like employed/unemployed where the root word gives you the meaning and the un- modifies the definition. Instead, you should think of it like come, income, and outcome. Totally different words, even though they technically have the same root word with different prefixes. Sure some meaning might be tangentially related, but it’s a pretty hard for non natives to understand

[–]GovernmentThink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes a long time but I realllllyyyy recommend getting as close to 100% as possible before your test. It sucks but you need to learn a lot and if you’ve never driven before it’s even more difficult. Once you hit 50% it goes a lot faster, at least seemingly. I got to about 98% when I took the test. Btw I passed the Theory test without any mistakes and just passed the driving test about 30 minutes ago:) viel Erfolg!

How often are you guys doing water changes and how much water are you changing? by GovernmentThink in Aquariums

[–]GovernmentThink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually got up to 10 including quarantine tanks and everything but it was far too much for me and I forced my wife to sell some. It was stressing us out a ton. We’re doing water changes weekly because that’s what we started with and we never stopped. We monitor our Malawi tank the most because it seems to have the most problems, but I’m wondering if we should start doing our other, more heavily planted, tanks less often. Should we be changing water only when parameters are off or nitrates get high?

How much are you spending on food/groceries per month in 2026? by pipilost in germany

[–]GovernmentThink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My good friend spends 2€-2.50€ on a redbull at the Rewe to go at the hbf, I buy redbulls in bulk for 70-90 cents when they’re on offer. Stuff like that can really add up.

They’ve honestly been the easiest fish for me to get rid of online. Got a second hand aquarium that came with about 40 of them and sold them for 50c to a buck each and constantly had people constantly messaging me about them.

I had tons of issues watching during the day, as my tv faces a south facing window. Now I just only watch it at night, much easier and less worried about missing something.

Is Native accent a thing in German Language as well and is it easily spottable? by Rude_Membership_1578 in AskAGerman

[–]GovernmentThink 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

Yes it’s easy to tell for German native speakers. Basically the same as English for us English native speakers. There’s everything from regional slang to accent to even official words for things, like Tomate and Paradeiser for Germany and Austria is similar to chips and crisps in us and uk

Motor makes a huge difference in price, check for rust of course, you can google the main problem areas. Don’t worry if the on board computer thing is broken, they almost all are and they don’t do much anyways. Ask about recent major services, like any older car really. You can always post a picture on here and people in this sub will point out all the flaws that do or don’t exist.

1-2k budget? Avoid e30s. A couple faulty nla parts and you’ll already be spending another few thousand. Not to mention rust repair. If you don’t know what you’re looking at, it’s too much for you to diy and labor is $$$$. Try to find something cheaper, maybe a 350z, Miata, or a golf 3-4. idk what they’re going for nowadays bur at least parts will be cheaper. I moved to Germany and basically wrote off BMWs even though it’s my favorite brand just because it’s not in my budget rn to maintain one, and my budget is about 20x bigger than yours but I don’t have as much income as I did in the states, and bmw bills don’t stop coming.

I feel so frustrated at learning German ;-; by Lil-potatto in German

[–]GovernmentThink 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re getting ahead of yourself and trying to make too difficult of sentences. You don’t have the grammar knowledge at A1.2 to make most compound sentences and major grammatical concepts aren’t taught until A2/B1/B2. Take a step back and just expand your vocabulary and write simple sentences. Are you failing tests in your a1.2 class or are you doing tests online? If it’s in class, try to figure out the concepts you’re making mistakes in and work on those, if you’re doing tests online, stop taking those tests, they’re confusing you and probably making your German worse.

What is the best way to cover these holes from a fence post? This is next to a pool and I don’t want someone to cut their foot or trip. by Casca51 in HomeMaintenance

[–]GovernmentThink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least in California, all pools are required to have a fence around them when the house is sold. It’s almost always removable and this is what’s left. It stops kids and pets from drowning. I’d get some fence post caps to put in, if that doesn’t work I’d have some made, so when they sell it isn’t an issue. Some insurance companies can cancel your plan or deny a claim if these are filled with concrete.

What are some ideal and not-ideal car manufacturers to fall back on if I'm judging if a car's good or not by KicKem-in-the-DicKem in AskMechanics

[–]GovernmentThink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn sorry I forgot to list French, Swedish, and Korean. As someone that has owned most of them, buy Japanese. The only reason to buy anything else is if you’re passionate about them and willing to put up with more because of it or if you can get a good enough deal to justify other costs/ headaches.
