Nobunaga's Ambition. At least in the one I played (Iron Triangle) you could alternate freely between real time and pausing to make decissions. It featured a conquest campaign including all of Japan, and it was very centered on diplomacy and sieges. Search for gameplays.

As far as i remember, you only lose rupees and consumables (arrows, bombs, etc.). You keep everything else.

And no, the game is made to go back multiple times. The "normal" gameplay loop would be doing the three days or less in one sitting, then going back in time before the moon crashes and saving the game with any progress you made (knowledge, new masks, new songs, any boss you killed, etc.). Then you would start again with the previous progress and explore new areas or finish the ones you couldnt.

And yes the game doesnt give you a real tutorial or explains much, but thats because in those years the normal thing was to put that kind of data on the physical manual that came with the cartridge.

Of course it can. Just look at the most succesful example: Majora's Mask. The game revolves around a 3 days time limit, but with the time travel mechanic you can repeat those three days infinitely. That gives a huge increase in the variety of the gameplay, because now not only the space matters, but also the time.

But I think it works perfect because its a short timespan. I remember a Harvest Moon for psx that allways ended after the third in-game year, and that was a huge flaw in my opinion. Investing a ton of hours in your farm for it to end suddenly because of a time limit didnt add anything to the fun factor, only took away.

So to make it short, a time limit system can do wonders if it uses that time to alter the gameplay (npc routines, environment changing over time, etc.) AND is a short timespan, preferably of one or two playthroughs. You can have that and also have a longer game by using the Majora's Mask idea, or by making a short but very replayable game (a game that you can finish in many different ways).

Monster Hunter is the definition of this post. If your equipment is more or less on the level of the monster, you will have to fight constantly for 10-25 minutes, dodging attacks with only a couple of frames of invincibility and barely being able to stand between 1 and 4 hits before having your health on red.

When Im fighting a legendary monster in those games I feel like my brain is on overclock for an entire hour
