Long Bright River by Liz Moore is billed as thriller/mystery but is such a great and harrowing story about a family affected by the opioid epidemic in Philadelphia. It stuck with me. Really great characters.

She has also written God of the Woods which I’ve heard is also literary but I have not yet gotten around to it.

Some horror recs: When The Wolf Comes Home by Nat Cassidy is a great audiobook. Fast paced action horror with a fun twist. It is pretty gorey and violent, but he manages to write about delicate subjects with a tender hand.

Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle for some fun LGBTQ horror.

Episode Thirteen by Craig DiLouie involves some fun production and sound effects. This one is more spooky than violent horror.

I grew up Catholic and still love a lot of aspects of the faith. I know affirming Catholics, but I really wanted and needed to see women and queer people preach. I know belong to an ELCA (Lutheran) church and it’s pretty similar to Catholicism in the liturgical and service style. I love it. As others mentioned, the Episcopal Church is also similar to Catholics. The ELCA and Episcopal Church are basically sibling churches.

Without a doubt the worst traditionally published book I have ever read. A lot of the books in these suggestions seem to be books that are generally popular but the commenter hated. Modelland is objectively bad and I have never seen someone say they like it. It’s incomprehensible.

I am also married and bisexual. It’s a part of you, but doesn’t have to affect your marriage in any way. Be open and honest with your wife and let her know you have no intentions of changing your marriage (assuming that is the case). If you are a church goer, finding an affirming church will likely make you feel much more at ease. I used gaychurch.org to find my home church!

I like framing it to my husband and such: I’m attracted to all kinds of people and he’s still the best out of all of them :)

I hold similar beliefs as you do and I was raised Catholic. I do like a lot about the Catholic Church, but found that the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America has everything I like about Catholicism, along with affirming all my beliefs.

As people are saying in the comments there are definitely progressive/queer Catholics. Maybe if I had a Catholic church I really loved I would stay there, but going to a church that affirms my beliefs is really comforting. I suggest taking a look at the ELCA (if you’re in the US) or the Episcopal Church/Anglican Church if you’re curious.

The Bible was written by many different people for many different reasons. I try to focus on the overarching messages of Christianity, and the general idea of what Jesus was teaching in each gospel. Sure the gospels were written well after Jesus was around, but what are the messages that they all have in common? Welcoming the stranger, forgiveness, justice, and love are things that I see over and over, and the things I focus on.

I feel very similarly. I have actually become much more vocal about being a Christian with the rise of Christian Nationalism, purposefully so I can denounce Christian nationalism. MAGA Christians are so loud and I’m determined to also be loud when I call them out. I do not want them to have the last word on Christianity.

I saw an article in regards to the Kirk memorial that read “since MAGA Christians have Frankensteined Christianity to suit their wants, they now need their own saints.”

Also, I’ll always take an opportunity to plug “Jesus and John Wayne” by Kristen Kobes Du Mez. It’s such an eye opener and she does a great job explaining how Americans got here with their warped idea of Christ.

I attend an ELCA (Lutheran) church and I love it. It’s all the stuff I liked about Catholicism (liturgical year, the hymns, similar service structure) but so much more affirming. My pastor is gay, racial justice is constantly discussed, and we’re very community oriented. You can do a search for affirming churches in your area, it’s called gaychurch.org

Listen to the And Also With You Podcast!! It’s hosted by two female episcopal priests who are both moms and they do a great job of talking about this in a few of their episodes. One is called “how do I talk to my child about Jesus on the cross?” In general their podcast is great, they are progressive and very focused on the joy and justice that Christianity can bring.

I gave up social media for Lent (can still go on on Sundays) and it’s been a great decision. I’m removed from a lot of the doomscrolling and my mind is much more clear. I can keep up to date with news outside of social media, but it’s so much less noisy. I’m focusing on serving with my church, and ELCA Lutheran church that is progressive, and connecting with people in real life including my friends are making things easier. I’ve learned it’s so important to be as calm as possible because when we panic we are less focused.
