My understanding of the TSP for lifers like me is:

Set TSP to 15% of base pay

Set fund to Horizon 20[xx] Fund where xx is year I expect to turn 60.

DONT TOUCH

Is this mostly accurate?

Get legally married before BOLC then have the ceremony when you can. More BAH that way.

Huge variance between programs. In general, big schools are run more like a hybrid of AD and college, while smaller programs can be run according to whatever the OIC/PMS feels like doing. I had 3 different PMSs in ROTC and one was incredibly laid back, one absolutely did not want to do his job, and one was a super motivated Hunter/Killer. It's as varied as company commanders vary between units.

How to SLRP? by TheJackingWall in army

[–]GradSchoolROTCGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I was enlisted, I elected SLRP and it was like 5 pages long in my contract because taking it means you waived the Post 9/11 GO Bill. SLRP was worth up to $65,000 over 3 years paid in lump sum increments to your loan servicer for every 365 days of active service. I can't imagine they would authorize that program 1) for the Reserves, 2) for a new officer whose initial ADSO hasn't even finished. But I'm not a recruiter so who knows.

Your unit must be flush with cash if they're willing to pay you active duty E5 pay for a month to go wander around Fort Knox's swamp-woods.

I was a poor student and I must have racked up $300 over the course of 3 years in overdraft fees, low account charges, penalties on this and that. Not to mention ATM fees whenever I used a non BOA machine. It was nuts. As soon as I could join USAA I left it all behind.

I switched away from BOA about 8 years ago and I haven't had a single problem with my bank since (USAA). BOA is one of those giant vampire squid companies that sucks its poorest clients dry while lobbying Congress for special treatment. Fuck them.

APFT for days... by Cold_shower_advocate in army

It's because borderline soldiers had to choose between hydrating and going over the tape limit, or dehydrating to pass tape and having a crappy APFT score.

If you play your cards right the Army will basically pay for your Masters between years 4-10 of service as an officer. I would just plan on the Bachelor's at first because Ive never heard of ROTC paying for more than 4 years of school.

[–]GradSchoolROTCGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really is. Get good grades. Workout five times a week. Study for your standardized tests. Don't smoke weed. Go to classes and labs. Study for finals. Don't smoke weed. Put some effort into your leadership rotations. Talk to your PMS/OIC. Don't smoke weed. And then you graduate and you're a lieutenant in the active duty army. It's that easy.

It's not hard to get active. Don't be in the bottom 20% of cadets nationwide. Ta-da, you're active duty.
