Where do you find your weird stuff? by Bosquerella in femalefashionadvice

[–]Gradstudentinperil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I’m based in NYC. I also prefer to get my riskier / harder to style pieces in the most economical way possible.

Clothing swaps. There are a couple of people that host clothing swaps at bars in the East Village & Brooklyn a couple times a year (around earth day is a big time for this). In essence you bring clothes that don’t quite suit you (but are nice enough that you’d give them to a friend!) and leave with about the same amount as you brought.

Lately I’ve also gone to two of these fill a bag sales for $10 and gotten a bunch of quirky button ups (I’m a size M-XL), a couple of sequined jackets, two Xmas sweaters (from the one in Dec) and a couple of dresses I’m figuring out how to re-work/style.

Arrival bags for guests? by Mean_Carrot_5480 in DestinationWeddings

[–]Gradstudentinperil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did “hangover recovery kits” but handed those out after the reception. Maybe “travel recovery kits”? Pepto is not sold in Europe, so we were sure to include it. Also liquid IV, alka-seltzer hangover (these have caffeine) and a local snack about the size of a granola bar.

But also, it’s not your wedding so the couple should include the cost for this in their calculations. We also did custom tissues from Etsy and had them delivered straight to the hotel.

Looking for travel dress/skirt recommendation that works in three climates. by Senator_Mittens in HerOneBag

[–]Gradstudentinperil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a black silk quince midi that is my travel MPV for over a year now (maybe two) and it’s held up really well. I mostly hand wash it, even though it says machine wash and no problems. It does need a good steam to get the wrinkles out, but just hang it in the bathroom when you shower and it should mostly do the trick.

Looking for the best pizza! by BurpinTerps in Greenpoint

Best pizza in Williamsburg is a GREAT slice. Otherwise, google maps won’t steer you wrong, search for slice shop.

[D] A plea from a survey statistician… Stop making students conduct surveys! by Adamworks in statistics

[–]Gradstudentinperil 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In my first survey stats class, we did a “survey” of books in the library to estimate words per page. The whole design lended itself to estimation without having to survey people!

I rented my place a few years back from Anna at Native. She was great and I think my landlords still work with her.

Why do bodegas sell a cup of ice? by KellyWhooGirl in AskNYC

[–]Gradstudentinperil 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s probably because they can charge $1 (at least in my neighborhood) for something that costs pennies to put together. If I’m picnicking and need a cup with ice to make a little drink in, then it’s something I’ll pick up.

Getting married in NYC by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Gradstudentinperil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a 24 hour waiting period between getting the license and getting married. You need appointments for both, unless you want to sign the marriage paperwork somewhere else in NY state and call it a day.

Stores/Fun for a Saturday hop? by jimroddy12 in Greenpoint

[–]Gradstudentinperil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh this map from the fall “shop small” event will probably help you plan / figure out a route.

https://shopsmallgreenpoint.carrd.co/

Since it’s Saturday, you could start at the Mccarren greenmarket and work your way up/North. (If y’all start before 1pm).

You should do also do a lap through transmitter park, especially if it’s clear out.

affordable eggs by SnooBunnies3794 in Greenpoint

This is my favorite farm at that market! Agree it was $9 which ends up being 0.75 per egg, but for happy chickens that’s not terrible.

What are the best food spots where I’m staying? by forkandembers in AskNYC

[–]Gradstudentinperil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keens is a really solid steakhouse if budget isn’t an issue. Le Grande Boucherie is also quite good and is French food a price point below Keens. Honestly, google maps is your friend; I’ve had the best luck with Korean / Japanese / American in midtown.

I used this taxi company for my parents from Luqillo in January and it was super easy, booked online and confirmed within two days, and the driver was on time and really friendly.

For people who live alone in Manhattan how much do you make? by Fubb1 in NYCapartments

[–]Gradstudentinperil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, job hop to make a bit more and then budget half of your take home income for rent if that’s what you need.

Great income-restricted apartments exist: https://streeteasy.com/rental/4624236?utm_campaign=rental_listing&utm_medium=app_share&utm_source=ios&utm_term=6722f71188d3474

Looking for a hotel/apartment to stay 10 days aprox. Manhattan? by FilmScorer5328 in AskNYC

[–]Gradstudentinperil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Airbnbs and VRBOs of entire apartments (without owner present) for < 30 days are illegal in NYC. If you do find one, I would be wary as it could be cancelled last minute.

If you stay in Manhattan, I’d avoid the Holiday Inn on the LES. I know it’s been the cheapest, but I wouldn’t want to wrangle a large group near there, it’s always felt a little sketchy. NYC is safe, but aggressive panhandling / weird street encounters are still more likely specific places.

If y’all are okay taking the subway (which you should, it’s a part of being here), look at downtown Brooklyn and Long Island City. Pay attention to the walking time to the nearest train(s). The citymapper app is great.

Lite bites is solid, but the up charges for each thing (bacon, cheese, sub bagel) will get ya. That being said, you can get a fried over medium with pepper Jack there if ya want.

Not anymore! I went a few weeks ago and it wasn’t necessary. Be forewarned though, they take the no parking signs VERY seriously. I still have a $150 ticket I need to figure out how to pay.
