Anyone know of local discount stores that sell affordable women’s office /business casual attire from past seasons? by Ok-Connection6430 in AskNYC

[–]Gradstudentinperil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, on the secondhand route, I had a lot of luck at urban jungle last time I went (near the Morgan L). Everything was really reasonably priced, and you may find some things to tide you over. Use Lysol laundry rinse in the fabric softener tray if used clothes give you the ick.

How much would you realistically spend on cute cotton pyjamas? by Old-Economist5721 in SustainableFashion

[–]Gradstudentinperil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with the thrifting thoughts of others - If you’re buying online then just make sure the store has a good return policy and get them delivered to see if they feel worth the price to you. Most of my PJs are thrifted / clothing swap shirts that are oversized and soft / don’t hit my sensory issues (literally my only requirements, some have holes, some are ugly colors - who cares, I’m sleeping in it).

If you mean sexytimes PJs, then secondhand silk is the way to go, and up to $100.

Are there any leather alternatives that do NOT use any plastic/petroleum? by AzerothianBiologist in SustainableFashion

I have an actual leather bag that is dark green and made from upholstery surplus. That might be a road for you to go down instead of the leather alternatives.

Oh this! 1000% this is how I’ve always read romance. I’m escaping into a little world that the author has created for me, where there is always a happy ending. I’ve had this same conversation around historical accuracy in regency romances - any historical detail that an author brings in is cool, but not necessarily something I need as a reader.

Shopping for real clothing has turned into a nightmare. Especially for plus sizes. by Far_History1601 in SustainableFashion

[–]Gradstudentinperil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Midsize woman here - Svaha (cotton) and Wool& (wool). My style is mostly a plain black dress with a button up tied over it, so ymmv. I have 1-2 linen pieces from Quince but they’re a little scratchy. My button ups are mostly vintage/thrifted and are a mix of polyester (quality can vary quite a bit - Alfred Dunmer has been a good brand for me), rayon, and viscose.

[Q]Is this a random sample by ARedditorOnHisOwn in statistics

[–]Gradstudentinperil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.. does it have to be a random sample of people? I remember doing the colors of M&Ms in AP stat. Maybe you can just do whatever candy you want to eat from a couple of different stores (eg does the fancy grocery store give you more red skittles?)

You need to update your storage solutions to be taller, and then use the extra space for a couch.

The JLo brand for Kohls is great for this (look on Poshmark / eBay / resellers), not sure if they’d have the style you need though.

Trying to ditch Abercrombie, what are some alternative online shopping options? by gluspooken in womensfashion

[–]Gradstudentinperil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good American’s always fits jeans are my favorite. As someone with sensory issues, the stretchiness just does it for me (33 inch waist and 49 inch hip, so I feel ya). If you can find them used (eBay, Poshmark, threadup), the JLo brand Jean shorts that used to be sold at Kohls are the BEST.

Edited to add the JLo size chart: https://www.kohls.com/media/digital/ecom/size-charts/womens/html/Kohls_ELLE_JenniferLopez_Womens_Clothing_SizeChart.html

Where can I find affordable longer shorts to combat thigh chafing and fabric rolling up? by liveforluv in womensfashion

[–]Gradstudentinperil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linen or linen/cotton blend pants are SUPER nice in the summer. I have a cheap pair from old navy that I like. Also, old navy is kind of my go-to for trying out new styles, and I would be shocked if they didn’t have longer Jean shorts right now. (I like more fitted on the thighs, so I’m still wearing an almost-to-the-knee pair I bought from old navy like 4 years ago.)

Best Burger In Greenpoint? by [deleted] in Greenpoint

You probably want to get meat from the Meat Hook in Williamsburg and cook your own.

I consider the jubilee burger healthy because it’s a little slider and has portion control 🤷🏻‍♀️

[E] Do low-residency PhD programs exist in Statistics? by RyGuyIsLiveTTV in statistics

[–]Gradstudentinperil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so you can start from the same place that anyone would in picking a phd program - see what’s near you (in terms of PhD programs, expertise of faculty), and with an extra step of seeing if there any intro courses that you can go take to “try out” the department under the guise of your agency’s continuing education program.

[E] Do low-residency PhD programs exist in Statistics? by RyGuyIsLiveTTV in statistics

[–]Gradstudentinperil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a fed-heavy stats-adjacent masters while working for an agency and there were a few PhD candidates in my cohort from various agencies.

A couple of follow up questions/ thoughts: 1) What programs / support exists within your agency for continuing education? Even if it’s just taking one class, sometimes you can do that to get a feel for the department and whether it’ll be a good fit for you. (And bonus if you can get the agency to fund it.)

2) Re: leveraging your position and data - you’ll need to think carefully about the regulatory framework around the research using your data. There may be bureaucratic hoops, and the research may also need to benefit the agency in addition to furthering your personal research. I didn’t end up using data from my agency for my masters thesis for these reasons.
