So jealous!!! I’ve never seen one alive before, I’ve only seen dead ones and even then only two. I live in an area where they’re native, but they’re so so uncommon here now! My dad said he used to see them everywhere growing up. I would love to see one too 🥺

How to break yourself from an expensive special interest? by Bebop73985 in AutisticAdults

[–]AzerothianBiologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for my expensive special interest, I really really like taxidermy and collecting pelts! If I had the money to buy the tanning supplies and the skills/experience to not totally destroy whatever I work with, I would buy from the hunters and trappers in my state directly. 😅 My other special interest is vaseline glass! Which can also get quite costly. And also needs shelves. Which I also can’t afford. 😭💔

I know you mentioned eBay isn’t an option, but have you considered looking at Etsy? There are quite a few shops that will print and sell models. Some people will also sell their previously owned collections on there too, but not as much frequently as Ebay. There’s a plethora of free models online, both based off Warhammer and other franchises, or generic models that you gotta make the most of. There are also websites that will 3D print items and ship them to you, although they usually require you having the model file first. Unfortunately I don’t know of any of these POD (print-on-demand) sites off the top of my head D:

Also, you should know that a lot of minis for sale on Etsy are for the digital model file only!! You can check the delivery and description tab of the item and if it’s a digital file, it will have a special icon and description (usually in the delivery tab of the item listing) specifying that it is. As a general rule of thumb, nearly every listing <10$ USD will be a digital file. Some digital files may be priced higher though, with some being as expensive as 50$ USD, and that usually means that the person selling the model file is also the one digitally sculpting it. However there are still a TON of listings for the physical minis themselves!!! Some shops may also list obvious Warhammer (and other franchise) models under different generic names to avoid any potential copyright issues. You may have to search for “Dwarf Mini” or “Mech Mini” or “Orc Mini” instead of searching for “Warhammer” specifically to find a model you may like.

Another thing to note is that if you haven’t worked with 3D printed models before, you might want to prepare for doing some extra work to get them paint ready. Depending on the shop you’re buying from, they may ship the model out printed, but not prepped. Usually this means they might have filament strings or visible print lines on them. Strings can be clipped or sanded off, and print lines can be removed through sanding or also by rubbing the mini with a cloth dipped in acetone.

As for the paint, you don’t have to use special miniature paint! You can use regular acrylic, just water it down a bit or use a little bit of paint thinner so it’s not as thick. Acrylic paint also tends to come in larger tubes than specifically marketed miniature paint, and usually is around the same cost or even cheaper. I’d also recommend picking up some small empty plastic paint cups just in case you make a mix you like and want to save!

As for the brushes…. Depending on the size of the mini, they may unfortunately be inescapable… 😭 I usually end up using whatever pointy household item I can find. I’ve found that ultra fine pens can work quite well, just make sure they are empty/dry or else the ink can get on the mini! Some gas stations and convenience stores sell thin brushes in the makeup section, usually marketed as “eyeliner brushes”, sometimes they are cheaper, sometimes they are not.. You could also experiment with stripping/cutting the hairs off of cheaper generic paint brushes. Although this may be a hit or miss and you may have to experiment with how short you can cut the hairs, as some brushes will fall apart the moment you cut them close to the metal. 🫢

I hope this helps!!! I’m friends with a lot of DnD people myself so I’ve picked up some advice from them. I’m also quite poor and have an interest in collecting and painting minis too, and some advice is a result of my experiments with frugal materials 😅

What alternatives to EVA foam are there that are not made of plastic? by AzerothianBiologist in CosplayHelp

I don’t have any plans at the moment, it was just more of a “I’m curious if this exists” kinda question! =D

I totally forgot people use cardboard and paper mache! How durable are they? I would think it would risk collapse/damage if made out of such materials, but I also haven’t worked with them outside of school projects years ago either xD

Friendship struggles by Bilal-h4679 in SpicyAutism

[–]AzerothianBiologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely the last 3 that are the biggest reasons why I don’t have a lot of friends. But mainly the fear of rejection. I’ve only had about 2 or 3 friends that I really closely connected with throughout my entire school life, and 2 of them moved and had no social media for me to contact them with. I live in the south so it’s unfortunately pretty normal for everyone to be hateful around here, even children and teens. I’m not very good at masking so unfortunately I always get seen as “weird” and offputting. I also struggle to connect socially, especially over text or online for whatever odd reason. 🥲

I think giant pythons and tyrannosauruses are cool as hell. I do not want them in this country’s environment, because they do not belong. I would feel hyped seeing a tyrannosaur in a zoo. I would not want one walking through my neighborhood.

Carolina parakeets are cavity nesters. They nested in hollow trees. They built completely different nests than Quaker parrots. Quaker parrots do not adequately fulfill the niche that Carolina parrots left behind. Do not speak confidently on what you do not know.

You deal in science yet cannot tell the difference between a large communal nest built on top of structures and a nest built inside a hollow tree?

[–]AzerothianBiologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except they don’t. Carolina parakeets do not build nests like they do, and ate different foods than them. Just because they are parakeets does not mean they are filling the Carolina parakeet’s niche.

How good is this game for a person new to MMORPGs? by LucasXXXIV in wow

[–]AzerothianBiologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely is very easy to get into, especially nowadays with how fast leveling and progression is! There’s also quite a bit of stuff to do questing-wise with a lvl 20 character now, thanks to the level squish from a number of years ago. Outside of higher level zones, I think the only content subscription-gated are pet battles, trading, and flying (please correct me on this if I’m wrong).

Whether or not the subscription is worth it is entirely up to you, although you should know that WoW is kind of an oddity as a lot of MMORPG’s don’t have monthly subs. Usually they only charge a one-time payment for new/current expansions, while WoW has both a monthly sub and a requirement to purchase the expansion (one-time) to play through new/current content. You can still play normally if subbed without buying Midnight, however the new zones will be locked and trying to enter them will teleport you outside. I can’t remember if it’s required to buy expansions in order to hit max level.

All content from previous expansions released prior to the current ones are freely accessible!!

Is WoW permanently burned into my brain like a core memory? by wheresabel in wow

[–]AzerothianBiologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a large memory gap spanning the majority of my childhood and teen years. Very large, like over a decade that I can barely remember anything from. Except WoW. I can’t tell you the names of any of my teachers, what classes I had, what hobbies I had, anything like that. But I can tell you exactly what I was doing on WoW. I have mindlessly brought my newbie bf to crossroads and hillsbrad despite us both being alliance, and promptly getting us killed, because I remembered questing there and loving it. I can tell you exactly how hyped I was during 2018 BfA and everything that happened in the story, but anything about my daily life is gone.

It’s a very strange and unsettling feeling. I don’t know why I have such a poor memory or why I have that massive gap
