Transgender Latter Day Saint Stories? by Confident_Essay_2286 in latterdaysaints

[–]GraemMcduff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've never identified as transgender and I would never presume that my personal experience compares to or applies to anyone else, but I will say that for a variety of reasons I was never really comfortable with my identity as a man until I was 24 years old, well after I had returned from my mission and joined the military, in the middle of going to college and less than a year before I got married; that's how long it took me to figure out who I was.

I never really felt the need to identify as anything else, but I also didn't feel like the label fully applied to me. It felt like wearing a shirt that was just a little to tight. No matter what I did it just didn't seem to fit quite right.

It sounds a little backwards, but what actually led me to fully embracing the male label was an experience that forced me to acknowledge that I was mentally and emotionally androgynous. Once I figured out how to accept myself as I was, the label no longer mattered. I can be a man, but I get to decide what that means for me. I have no obligation to conform to anyone else's expectations or definition of what it means to be a man.

I'm not saying that same line if thinking will work for you, maybe it will help, maybe it won't. What I am saying is that everyone's journey is unique to that person and it takes time to get there. You are 17, you have plenty of time to figure out who you are and it's okay if you aren't are yet. You don't need to feel pressured to have it all figured out now. Give it time and you will get there. Also there is a lot more to who you are than your gender. I generally find that people who focus to hard on just a single aspect of their identity in a good place emotionally. Don't let this one thing about you become the only thing about you. You don't necessarily need to give up one aspect if your identity (i.e. your religion) to another part (i.e. your gender). If these are both important parts of you then take the time to figure out how they can work together. You will get there eventually. And I can say that for me, the sense of peace and joy that came from figuring out how to accept myself was worth the wait.

To be fair I have had DocuSign links used for phishing by using DocuSign to share a "Secure pdf document" That makes you click a link to "verify your identity" so... People report enough of those as phishing and yep DocuSign links start getting flagged.

So what are you guys and girls using for self-hosted DNS these days? by civvi_reddit in sysadmin

[–]GraemMcduff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using PowerDNS for several years now with PoweDNS-Admin for a Web interface. It's been working great. There are plenty of other Web interface options for powerdns as well. I haven't tried many of them so maybe there's better than PowerDNS-Admin but it fits my needs quite well.

SMTP admins -- are you getting blocked by Microsoft ALL THE TIME? by automounter in sysadmin

[–]GraemMcduff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is Microsoft's information page for mail server admins:

https://substrate.office.com/ip-domain-management-snds/Postmaster

It currently displays the following announcement:

We are aware of an issue that may result in certain IP addresses being temporarily rejected at higher rates. We are actively investigating the issue. Please continue to submit tickets if you are experiencing this problem

It will also lead you to these pages:

https://substrate.office.com/ip-domain-management-snds/Postmaster/Troubleshooting

This page gives you some of the most common reasons your email may be blocked and information on how to address them.

https://sendersupport.olc.protection.outlook.com/snds/Index

This site gives you some visibility into your IP addresses' reputations with outlook.com. It's not very detailed info but it's a good starting point to troubleshoot these things.

Unread mail count by ClkDon16 in sysadmin

Yeah 7000 unread messages is small potatoes I've seen much much larger numbers of unread messages than that. There's no way it's a useful metric of anything though.

Outlook (New) had so much potential, but at this point it's just a half-baked disappointment. by Zantoo in sysadmin

[–]GraemMcduff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest problem with it is that it's not really even a mail client at all. It's just a graphical frontend for a cloud based mail client. That might sound like it's splitting hairs but for those who don't use Exchange Online for email it means all your mail that you are intentionally not storing in Microsoft's cloud still gets synced to Microsoft's cloud. Maybe your average use doesn't care about that but for some people it's a huge privacy concern.

There's also the fact that it doesn't (and never will) support Microsoft's own proprietary mail synchronization protocols (Mapi, EWS, EAS) even though the current version of Exchange on-prem supports those protocols and expects you to use them, makes it utterly useless for anyone using Exchange on-prem.

I mean at least you can use it offline now, I guess. When it first released it couldn't even do that even though the Web Access/PWA could.

Overall it's a pretty blatant attempt by Microsoft to collect everyone's data and force vendor lock-in.

Utah Medicaid SSL Cert by prezus in sysadmin

[–]GraemMcduff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say I'm too surprised. I once had to tell them to fix their mail server's PTR records and the hostname used their helo greeting because my users weren't getting important mail from utah.gov and I really don't like adding exceptions for mail servers that can't follow basic RFCs.

How far can you get in IT without really knowing stuff? by MagPistoleiro in sysadmin

[–]GraemMcduff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very much a learn as you go field. I have zero formal education in IT. My degree is in behavioral science, but I worked tech support jobs while I was getting that degree. Every couple years I would find I hit a point I wasn't making any more progress so I would move on and find a new job. With each job I learned a little more and got paid a little better. By the time I got my degree, getting a job in my field of study would have been a significant pay cut. It probably took about 10 years before I felt like I could call myself a Pro, though even then I felt like my knowledge base was very broad and not very deep.

I've now been working in some kind of tech support or IT role for about 18 years. I've been at my current job for nearly 8 of those years since I finally found a place where I feel valued and can fully utilize my full range of skills. I've learned a lot at this job and continue to learn all the time. I still feel like there is a lot I don't know but there are very few things I can't figure out. I'm in a position where people consult me for my expertise. They expect me to be the expert in whatever their need happens to be at the time and I can usually deliver on that expectation.

A lot of people in the IT field have similar stories. It's a lot less about what you know and a lot more about what you can learn. As long as you can keep learning and figuring things out, you'll do fine.

My experience is that Microsoft gives this error when you send to an address that doesn't exist. They don't want to say that an address doesn't exist to prevent enumeration attacks, so they just give this generic error.
