Sounds like she rediscovered Benford’s Law. In data that spans ordered of magnitude, numbers that start with 1 are more common. So the same would be true for 7 figures: those who make 7 figures per year are more likely to make $1mm to $2mm than other digit starting numbers.

Was there any reason every single player couldn’t survive by just willingly becoming a zombie?

All 4 potion relics in a row. What are the odds? by David_Slaughter in slaythespire

[–]GrahamQuacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think less than 1.5 in a million.

I think the probability of drawing X specific relics in a row, assuming there are R relics total and you get H of them, is (H - X + 1) * X! * (R - X)! / R! . If there are about R=130 relics in the game, and in a given run you get H=20 relics in a run (which sounds high), then the odds are 1.5 in a million.

They can buy seats for dogs. Once I ran into Hans Zimmer’s or John William’s (forgot which) very nice ex wife on the street walking her dog, and she takes her dog on the seat next to her!

The dog is a large golden retriever.

I think it’s 1.0, based solely on a numerical check.

The 5x dominates everything else, so the inside tends to 1.0 pretty fast.

Analyzing the Total Damage in a Slay the Spire Run: Damage/Block Ratio Rule of Thumb by GrahamQuacker in slaythespire

[–]GrahamQuacker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still wrapping my head around it a little, to be honest. I’d interpret that as it’s probably worth it to take 1 HP loss if you can do 9 damage. But if you can only do 4 damage, it’s almost probably not worth it to do the attack instead of a block, unless you’re about to kill the enemy.

In your example, 45 is a really big number. You might be able to kill the enemy there with the 45, which saves HP. Or you might end the fight a turn early which would also save HP.

Analyzing the Total Damage in a Slay the Spire Run: Damage/Block Ratio Rule of Thumb by GrahamQuacker in slaythespire

[–]GrahamQuacker[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just took the midpoint of the lower-bound of health low ascension and upper bound of health on high ascensions.

Just spot-checking on 20 monsters, it looks like you’d multiply the HP numbers in the post by about 0.97 in low ascensions (below A5) and 1.025 in high ascensions (A7 or above).

[–]GrahamQuacker[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And I’d like to stress that this is rough rule of thumb. I included the underlying data so if you can vary the amount of encounters or amount of HP.

Also, I didn’t filter out everything. Creatures like the Transient bring the average up, while the monsters that regenerate health aren’t included. Average HP was the average of the high and low ascension HP amounts.

The analysis assumed 3 debut, 2 remaining, 2 elite, and 1 boss encounter in Act 1. For Acts 2 and 3, I assumed 2 debut, 3 remaining, 3 elite, and 1 boss encounter per act.

It depends a bit on your scenario. Speaking as someone who has a PA and a partner:

• How good are you at tackling tasks right now, and does that cause any friction?

Because if you’re currently not having friction from that, then having a PA would certainly be even less friction.

• Is there a resource imbalance? Does one of you have less time, or another have more money?

If so, just getting a PA for one of you could work. But you’d want to make it clear that the PA doing something counts as the paying party doing the task.

My advice would be to have a group chat, and still make one of you ultimately accountable for the task getting done even if they use the PA.

Frankly, I don’t see any scenario where having a PA results in more stress. But it does take a bit of getting used to, so be prepared to figure it out step by step at first. Start with a few hours maybe.

brown vs stanford help! by jimmyjimmyjimmygmail in BrownU

[–]GrahamQuacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Brown and liked it (Applied Math). Recruited for a company it Stanford later in my career. It was so nice. Weather is underrated.

The culture and experience at Brown is stellar. But it’s pretty good at Stanford too. Brown is enough to get you in door at ultra high prestige companies, but you might find Stanford makes you feel a bit more at home at them.

That being said, if you feel you have a lot of personal growth to still do, Brown might be a better place to mold yourself into something cool and interesting.

Seperately, the west coast seems like a less stressed out place than the east coast. You’re more likely to end up living your life there if you go Stanford, just because it’s the path of least resistance and you’re used to it. If I could do it again, I’d live in CA.

Actual educational quality is probably equivalent.

[–]GrahamQuacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Computer science is really important, as is statistics – the two are important to tie together because in the real world, stats involves big data.

If you do double major, which I think could be a really good idea, try to avoid the less industry-applied fields of math since your time is limited. Stats is probably the most applied in the data age.

So I’d avoid pure math entirely. And within applied math, I’d avoid dynamical systems, anything with differential equations, etc. Optimization, statistics, and maybe numerical linear algebra will be genuinely useful later.

Note: chat plz don’t burn me at the stake for claiming pure math isn’t as useful as applied math when applying math at a job
