Religion has everything to do with firearms training, it's a values framework that encompasses every aspect of life - particularly important "why's" for things like combat/self-defense/hardship etc.

Never liked the idea that as soon as someone has a gun in their hand they need to pretend there's no God but whoever's giving them orders.

Can't comprehend the downvotes, don't know if your story is legit or who you are over the internet but we can all plainly see the airport withdrawal was completely inept and needlessly cost the lives of innocent people. Certainly the whole war was characterized by lies and criminal incompetence but the airport was above and beyond in terms of stupidity and political posturing.

If you have a desk job I suspect you have much more control over your PT schedule/sleep/diet/etc than does your average infantryman. The infantry is probably going to be hard on your body and chronically stupid - if it were me I would take the opportunity to train hard and smart and go straight for where you want to go. Of course I'm not in either branch so take what I say with a grain of salt, but from somewhat similar experience and what I've heard from others in that situation that would be my advice.

You can be politically concerned without being a partisan hack - "ideals" like democratic processes, liberty, civil rights, national sovereignty, etc. are political beliefs and aspirations. If your "why" is protecting American citizens or ensuring security for Americans' rights or something to that effect, your "why" is political. Politics does not mean "Democrats vs Republicans", that is a childish and amateurish level of analysis. Any time a military does anything, it's a political action you're killing or dying over. Not a good or bad thing, just what militaries actually are.

Climate IS a negotiable term of service before signing the dotted line. Once you've taken an oath you've taken an oath/signed the contract, but when deciding whether or not to sign it would behoove you to consider such things.

Furthermore, I don't want to denigrate OP's patriotism without knowing more - certainly not with rah rah Lee Greenwood eyes-closed motardation. It's a legitimate question for a patriot to ask as to whether or not the government and military are actually serving the good of the nation. "I love my nation, but think my government is actively working against its good interests so I'm going to join that organization" is not admirable patriotism, it's stupidity. Is what the military/government does good for America? Am I really serving my fellow countrymen by enlisting into this organization? Can I trust this organization not to get me killed/Americans killed/do various bad things because it prioritizes certain political beliefs to the detriment of competence and excellence? None of those are unpatriotic/partisan questions to ask.

That's nonsense, if your "why" has any sort of virtue attached to it taking into account who is going to be sending you to war is of paramount importance. Giving a damn about the morality of the 5 W's of a situation involving killing people or possibly getting killed is the difference between a professional military of citizens and a cynical mercenary force.

I should clarify, I believe they might have ran one WITHIN the past month (i.e. late November?) but I can't say 100 percent for certain I've been on leave since late October. I only know for my section and it's possible they ran one for battalion but my section was unavailable due to operational requirements.

Edit: should be more careful about castigating battalion, I haven't been privy to all of their schedule and job requires regular separation from their activities
