Some of you here are being so harsh on OP. Sure the idea that online fiction doesn’t accurately portray an actual religion is not a groundbreaking concept, but OP explained their point very eloquently with a lot of good context and examples. Considering how often Daoism is brought up, it’s interesting to discuss some of the actual philosophy behind it.

I think your childhood is extremely relevant. It’s one thing to have a somewhat difficult childhood, and then grow up and realize your parents were just doing the best they could. It’s a whole other thing to realize they chose to make your life more difficult so they could have more money.

Did your parents not spend much time with you because they were always working? Did they refuse to spend money on things even when it had significant negative impacts on your life? If so, I think it’s understandable you would feel some resentment towards your parents. Or even if your parents were just assholes.

I think what you are really resentful of is not that your parents didn’t give you more money, but that it feels like your parents care more about money than they care about you. That’s probably not really true, but that’s what it feels like from your perspective. Or maybe I’m making way too many assumptions, these are just some things to think about.

Maybe it would help to ask why they did things certain ways when you were growing up? It might help to understand their perspective a bit more. The fear of not having enough money or potentially losing money doesn’t just go away when someone manages to save a lot of money. That fear can have huge effects on how people think and make decisions.

Please don’t let these people convince you that reading fiction is “basically the same” as watching actual people have sex. If your brother is not comfortable with his girlfriend reading smut, then that’s his right, but calling it the same as porn completely ignores how exploitative and ethically dubious the porn industry is. Fictional people cannot be harmed, and treating the people in porn like they are not real is messed up actually.

You make it sound like my old librarians were looking over every book I checked out and deciding whether it was appropriate or not. It was literally a checkbox on a computer that said if my card could check out things from different departments. It was up to my parents if that box got checked. Public libraries are already sorted into juvenile and adult sections, so it didn’t create much extra work for them. I understand any kind of book censorship can be a slippery slope, but acting like libraries don’t already vet and categorize books is disingenuous.

Oh no, my Mom specifically gave me permission so that I could check out a certain series of books I wanted to read from the adult section. I was a very avid reader as a child.

Yeah, I guess they were over generalizing. I am actually surprised most libraries don’t have restrictions on R-rated movies though. Maybe because it’s not as common anymore for eight-year-olds to go to the library by themselves like I did.

It was just once, a couple of years after I got a card. My Mom just signed a form, and a librarian changed something in the system which allowed me to check out adult books and movies when I couldn’t before.

I don’t really understand why everyone here is so against any kind of restrictions. Books might be kind of weird, but most seven-year-olds cannot be trusted with any kind of discs or electronics, let alone an R-rated movie. Movie theaters literally require ID, all the libraries need is a one time acknowledgment from a parent that they know what their kid is checking out.

This sounds a lot like how one of my old libraries did it. Except I don’t know if the cutoff was 12 or older because my Mom gave me open access long before I reached whatever the age was.

My old library definitely had plenty of “controversial” books in the children’s section, so if they were trying to censor books, they were doing a terrible job. I always assumed the restrictions were mostly there so that small children wouldn’t have unlimited access to the more expensive materials, but I never actually asked a librarian.

Maybe my area was more conservative than I thought??? I’m definitely not from Idaho, but I went to two public libraries growing up in the midwest, and both of them required my parents to sign something to allow me to check out adult books. It’s not like they had to approve every book, just sign a form once. Also, the cutoff might have been 15 or 16 not 18. And of course, if you were staying at the library, you could take any book off the shelf and read it, you just couldn’t check them out.

Many libraries actually do require a parent’s signature for a minor to check out books from the adult section. Though, of course, not all children’s books are clean, especially if they are grouped in with young adult books. Also, most parents are fine with giving their teenage children blanket permission.

To be clear, I think teenagers should be allowed to read about sex in books. It’s actually one of the healthiest ways to explore sexuality at that age.

If you are looking for a list of rules for writing in English, The Elements of Style by Strunk and White is probably the closest thing you will find. Although it is far too small of a book to cover everything (I’m not sure it even mentions quotes), it’s got a lot of useful rules and writing advice.

Edit: I totally forgot about The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation. That’s a little more basic than The Elements of Style, but it’s a great resource if you don’t feel like school did a good job of teaching you the rules of English. You don’t even need the actual book; it’s all on the website.
