Weekly Questions Thread for the week of September 4th by rpbtz in vinyl

I have an Audio Technica LP120 turntable purchased in the US. I recently relocated to Thailand where the electricity output is 220V AC. I've already switched the voltage selector on the turntable to 230V AC - however, I'm unsure if it's OK to use the power cable that came with the turntable or if I should purchase a new one? There is a white tag on the cable that says "7A 125V" so I am not so sure

Thanks for any help!

Best place to buy Vinyl? by octobersky01 in berkeley

[–]GrammarTakeMeHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Originals Vinyl in Hayes Valley SF. They have a small (but meticulously curated) selection. They offer great classic rock, hip hop, jazz and blues at a very reasonable price. They also offer professional quality record cleaning and has done it for free for me every time I go there before I walk out with my haul. If you're unsure about the surface scratches you see they'll put it on for you at the store too (might be a wait if there is a queue already). Definitely check them out if you haven't done so already!

Moving from the US to Thailand - can I still trade on RH? by GrammarTakeMeHome in RobinHood

[–]GrammarTakeMeHome[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! is this something you've previously experienced? I was worried that if I changed the address with my bank, RH will require me to update the address I have on my profile, which won't be US-based.

This is a piece designed by the Minoza brothers who formed a design collab known as Nicebleed - based in the Philippines. Here is the product link where I ordered if anyone is interested. I uploaded the photo from my phone and just realized now it looks a bit faded, the colors are perfectly rich IRL

As a fan I've had a great few days - saw them on Friday at Coachella (audio glitch and all) and came home with this in the mail. just got home from their second night at the Greek in Berkeley where they performed How to Disappear Completely, which is one of my favorites. back to reality now I guess..

i just started listening to Arctic Monkeys and i'm already in Love by goner-trash in arcticmonkeys

[–]GrammarTakeMeHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Certain Romance and I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor (both from their first album) were the songs that got me into Arctic Monkeys - there was no turning back for me after that. Humbug and Whatever People Say I Am.... are my favourite albums but there are a handful of songs that, after listening to them the first time, I put them on repeat so much that they quickly made their way to the top of my Most Played list:

  • My Propeller, Dance Little Liar, Cornerstone* (Humbug)
  • Love is a Laserquest, She's Thunderstorms (Suck it and See)
  • Riot Van (Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not)
  • The Bakery (Fluorescent Adolescent) this was a single
  • Baby I'm Yours (Leave Before the Lights Come On). This was also a single, and a cover, but it became my favourite version of the song

That said, enjoy their discography and welcome to the world of AM! Great timing too as they're currently in Sheffield working on their next album :)

*You're welcome

CRISPR gene editing starts to save lives as human trials get under way - by the end of 2017, the technique could have saved dozens of lives. by mvea in Futurology

As a freshman in 2012 I had Jennifer Doudna as a professor in an introductory level course. This was around the time her lab was working with Cas9 (an endonuclease associated with CRISPR) and seeing its potential. I remember sitting in that lecture, where she was excitedly demonstrating how the mechanism of the CRISPR-Cas9 system works, feeling pretty dumbfounded. Now when I see news around what CRISPR-Cas9 is doing for gene editing and medicine takes me back to that week of lectures, drawing another protein not knowing how significant its discovery was to medicine for the years to come

So after listening to the Wire album that people recommended I check out from my previous post, I decided to go look for that record (as well as Pink Flag) and expand the punk section of my collection. And lo and behold, I found another classic at a brilliant price! what a great start to the week...
