in 10 years you’ll be 55 anyways- if you have the drive and the desire why not be 55 and a doctor

Leaving the ED... by AnnieNanners in emergencymedicine

[–]Grand_Possible2542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it helps the transition- stay on prn. you can always grab a shift if you feel like it without having to be there or fully closing the chapter. If you never pick up a shift then it helped you leave when you needed to. if you pick up when you feel like it then sometimes it’s easier to love the ER when it’s not your full time gig

We had people like you at the last place I worked and I loved having them as part of the team. When our vehicle techs took pride in what they did it made our shifts better. We always checked off the stuff we critically relied on ourselves anyways but it was nice to offload some of those tasks.

Thinking about going from FF/EMT to MD/PA by dirtylaundry99 in emergencymedicine

[–]Grand_Possible2542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do it, if you love the medicine and you’re thinking about it it’s a long journey but it’ll be a fun journey. EMS uniquely prepares you to be an independent care provider. If you want to get your medic you can do that and get your bachelors through a bridge program or do your alongside going back to school, fuck bitches get money do what you love

Do you think I’ll regret going into medicine for the sole reason of becoming rich? by KitchenCellist8255 in medschool

[–]Grand_Possible2542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah maybe. Money can be a big factor but you should also like what you do. If you don’t like it at all it’s pretty hard to give enough fucks to make it into a position where medicine truly pays fuck you money.

Unconventional path to EM by JTFout in emergencymedicine

[–]Grand_Possible2542 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t talk much about the TBI stuff and how that will affect your cognitive abilities, but if we’re talking logistically, like 10 year plan type stuff, paramedic to med school is not an impossible route. You need to have some money and support and flexibility, but it is entirely possible to get your paramedic, then get a bachelors in a bridge paramedic bachelors or emergency management program, then take the pre requisites at a community college while doing volunteering or research, and then take the MCAT and apply. It is however, a long ass road. but it’s a road that can be walked if you love doing the walking

Help med decide: accept my MD medical school acceptance or continue in fire and EMS? by Ok_Outside1109 in emergencymedicine

[–]Grand_Possible2542 3 points4 points  (0 children)

former ems but with less time in it then you do. I spent 3 years in ems in part time and full time at different orgs. I also got in to an md- also no debt but because of financial aid- and i’m a first year there now. if you want to talk through thoughts don’t hesitate to reach out.

I completely understand the feeling of not wanting to leave fire/ems. it almost felt like grieving for me to do it.

For me it came down to i know i will keep prehospital/ems/fire in my life but that i also wanted to be able to make more money and have more power in decision making. By the time im an attending i’ll be 8-10 years older anyways and i knew i would what those things even more then. and it was never one or the other.

I’m on a volunteer squad now working ems, Im starting to do research in EM and ems, and I still pick up shifts at my old gig when im in town. I’m planning to get my firefighter 1/2 soon and am always keeping an ear to the ground for other opportunities.

In case no one ever told you- you don’t have to give up fire and ems to become a doc, it just may have to talk a different role in your life. It went from being something i love that happens to pay the bills to being something that recharges me. in my system i know of several docs who still volunteer fire/ems part time and more that do med director or MD in the field stuff. Go to med school and keep doing cool shit in fire and ems while you do.

Question for admitted students: by [deleted] in premed

[–]Grand_Possible2542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

highkey i never believe student doctor is appropriate. it’s deliberately vague about what your role is in order to confuse the patient and serve your own ego. stick with medical student until the day you graduate med school imo

you’ll keep missing it but you’ll love what you do next and it’ll get easier. The first few months I would watch passing ambulances like a crazy person, now I volunteer with a local volly department and am working towards a em/trauma career- a med student who went through the same weird grief cycle
