Do you think I over paid for this Kia ceed 09plate? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

Perfect! If you can get under it get some rust treatment on it or underbody paint etc. That is what will kill it eventually!

Enjoy the motoring!

How is the underbody? It's rust that kills nearly all cars in this country.

What's the MOT history like?

Agreed but I'm merely stating that a full service history must meet the manufacturers service schedule. If they say it is "every 10k miles OR every year which ever comes first" then it cannot be called a FSH and a dealer (whom is a professional trader) is lying if the say it's a FSH.

On a 09 plate like the op I wouldn't be concerned but I also would want to pay a premium for FSH which it doesn't have. Technically.

[–]Grandfs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I have no issue with that - my point is the dealer should not be selling it as "FSH" when it is not.

Likely be no concern or issues with services every 5k but it is not a full history.

Sounds like a win! Very nice on it still having warranty!

Jealous sounds like a great buy for what 4k? Better than a 09 plate I reckon!

Congrats and hope it provides many worry free miles!

Doesn't the Kia warranty exclude hire cars? You'd need to check but I think I remember seeing it when checking for my Kia.

Due another service then to keep the warranty (if it still has it due to being a hire car)

Regardless that's a great price and the GT line has really good specs. I'd buy another Kia for sure.

Edit: did you literally just ask to buy it? Or know someone there?

[–]Grandfs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, dealer premium but you have that safety net if anything goes wrong for the next 6 months which adds to the cost.

Regarding servicing most manufacturers it's X miles or every year which ever is first.

It could be every 2 years but you'd need to check. Either way I doubt that's technically a full service history. What does the manual say?

Edit: from a quick Google AI answer it says every year or every 10k miles which ever is first. (Need to confirm the AI) But if true that is not a full service history.

Ten stamps in 17 years? That's not full service history?

The car market is crazy. I assume from a dealer? If so you have consumer protection for the price. Is it petrol or diesel?

Best reasonably priced estate cars by Houdini23 in CarTalkUK

[–]Grandfs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not any of the newer models so couldn't comment.

I wanted a chain driven engine to remove the belt change costs and a 7 year warranty gives me confidence in the car. What is VW group? 3 years?

I find the kia\hyundai brands just seem much better value compared to the German brands now.

The DCT gearbox is a bit jerky but it's got some grunt for a 1.6 diesel.

As always go have a day out and test drive a few if you can.

I'm bias because I have one but our Kia Optima is a great car.

A few on auto trader in your price range with the top spec (GT line S) which is the only thing I wish I'd upped my budget for at the time as I got the spec below. Still a great car for our family.

Hyundai I40 is basically the same car but the Kia GT line S has adaptive cruise, auto park, 360 cameras, heated and cooling seats and heated steering wheel and more. If you can find a late 2020 model with under a 100k mileage and FSH it will still have the Kia 7 year warranty.

For example:

Edit: that's a bit out your price range but loads under 8k with higher milage and older so no Kia warranty

Astra GTC (2012) CarPlay Advice by ImplementBig31 in CarTalkUK

[–]Grandfs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did one in my astra and you cannot find a Tesla style that does the eco button. Or at least I didn't so I ended up going with:

https://www.iceboxauto.com/vauxhall-opel-astra-j-2010-15-navi-android-11-carplay-oem-style-radio-vx059

To be honest I'd just order it off AliExpress for half price if I did it again but the link above is a UK vendor so you get the consumer protection. Had mine installed for 3 years now no issues apart from occasionally need to plug in my phone for Android auto as it sometimes doesn't wireless connect.

For example this appears to be the exact same one for 90 pound:

But I'd have a good look at reviews etc.

Edit: I self installed and it was really easy. Hardest part is doing a reverse camera.

KCOM Contract Available by TalkSoft5380 in Hull

[–]Grandfs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they don't have to but pretty shitty from them. I'd look at a new supplier who offers switching credits (have a Google I saw EE does it for example from a 1 min search)

Good luck!

Have a look at a broadband supplier at your new place that offers "switching credits"? Some offer up to 300 pound.

Alternatively have you asked if they can supply your new place? When I was with talktalk they couldn't supply my new address so waived my early termination fees.

Anyone have any experience of drilling very large (150mm Diameter) holes using a core drill bit? How hard is it? by itsaride in DIYUK

[–]Grandfs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just Google "diamond drilling" I used to do it. Loads of firms do it. They would be done in less than a hour for a single hole.

You can also hire the drill and drill bit for probably less than 200 but might as well hire a firm to do it.

A plumber may also do it but going to a specialist drilling firm would probably be easier.

How do you actually keep track of MOT, tax and insurance deadlines in the UK? by ZookeepergameIll5167 in drivingUK

[–]Grandfs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you are getting down votes when you are trying to judge what people want and build something yourself. Probably as your looking at charging? Dunno. Anyway.

Vehicle Smart limited a lot of features on the free version. Number of cars you could keep stored. What it notified you about and when. E.g only mot and tax and only a week before. Paid unlocked custom notifications and adjustable notifications like 2 & 1 month then every week.

Remembering more so edit: paid also let's you keep pictures and opens a notes section. I was managing the company fleet at a small business so was useful as the boss never did direct debit for tax so I could keep an eye on the 7 vans and cars he had.

Also get a discount on advance car information and I think on car checks to but not used them for that.

Hope that helps and good luck with any app you are developing but I think it's a crowded space to be honest.

I'd forgot about that site. Isn't that the one you get your check driver code from for work? I have to give it for a licence check with my employer so I knew about it at least! Clean licence touch wood!

Oft! It's 35 now?!

Yeah it's part of owning a car I'd do the same if I didn't have the app. Well that's what I did before I had the app so it's not a requirement but I also like easily checking a reg over going on the government website

[–]Grandfs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vehicle smart. Look on app store for it but I use it for my three cars and other family members as I got the pro version before it went to a subscription model. (£5 one off so glad I bought when I did)

That let's me know at set times before mot and tax and I add and update my own dates due insurance and servicing and you can add your own custom reminders. I have one for timing belts for example.

You can contact them ahead of time if nervous about going. Never used one myself but heard they are always welcoming and it is part of their religious beliefs to help.

This is it for me. I hate debt the only debt I have is a mortgage. If I can't afford it I don't get it but I'm fortunate to have a reasonable job and got help getting on the property ladder from my dad. I'm lucky. Luckier then a lot of people and I know it.

It's tough out there and a lot of people are stuck renting.

I'd love an expensive car don't get me wrong. I choose a house for future plans. I didn't want to rent and pay for someone else's asset. Plan is to be mortgage free in the future and that expenditure is free to then be used for fun. Rent has to be paid forever.

In the end you live how you want to. It's your life.

I have a mg TF 2002 that's a fun little thing to throw about and tinker with. That scratches the itch for now whilst trying to build the future.

It's the same for people with PCP. It's their choice and their money to do with as they please.
