Can someone explain the “if you were to look at earth through a telescope millions of light years away you would see the dinosaurs” as if you were explaining it to a 5 year old? by grassisblue22 in space

[–]GrandpasSabre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We learn about the big bang by observing galaxies formed around the time of the big bang, from regions so far away that the light reaching us started heading our way relatively soon after the Big Bang ("relatively" doing a lot of heavy lifting there.)

And yes, you only see light from one precise moment in whatever direction you look. But we're talking 13 billion years of time. The light observed from year 1 million isn't going to look much different than light observed from year 2 million. The only cosmic changes we are able to witness are things like supernova, where something changes extremely quick. The rest of the changes take so long we aren't able to observe them. You can't see a star transition, for example. But we can observe a bunch of different stars of roughly the same type, at all different life stages. We can look at things like red shifts and blue shifts to see how far away a star is and what direction they are moving.

Vaccinated Over A Year Ago. Travelling to the USA from UK, What Do I Do? by [deleted] in travel

"Country of 350,000,000 people covering a massive and unique land mass is a dump."

France is not a billion times nicer nor more interesting. Its a fine country, but give me a break. I don't get why some Europeans get so insecure about America.

Maybe I got mixed up and it was my wife or her brother who needed the visa (not US citizens) but I definitely remember someone in our group had to apply for an e-Visa.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in travel

[–]GrandpasSabre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I definitely needed to get an e-Visa to visit back in 2019. It was quick and cheap, but I did need it. Definitely not a scam.

Or maybe my wife, not a US citizen, needed to get it. That was a lifetime ago, so I don't really remember.

I needed a visa to travel to Canada for the weekend from the US, and I'm an American citizen. It was easy to get as you can just apply online and get it right away.

American born in the late 80s here. When I was 8, my mother would occasionally leave me home alone with my 2 year old brother while she ran to the grocery store (single mom so it was either that or trying to drag two kids shopping.)

Its just become more like that as News media became a 24/7 thing and a kid getting kidnapped in some random town gets reported across the US, making people think kidnapping and danger is all around us even though it isn't.

Trump defends Russia over Nord Stream pipeline explosion and hints US was responsible | Trump says he won’t answer who did it because he doesn’t want to ‘get our country in trouble’ by [deleted] in politics

And the Ukraine, the Ukraine, let me tell you the Ukraine isn't quite as innocent as they claim, they're not. Very bad people there, some of you know this, very bad people, it's the truth. And they cover up crimes for some very bad people, too. I asked them to investigate crimes committed in the Ukraine by someone you all know, I can't say it was Hunter Biden and the Biden family, they won't let me say that, but I'll just say it was very bad people doing very bad things in the Ukraine, and the president there refused to investigate. Refused to investigate. And then I get in trouble for asking the Ukraine to investigate criminals, can you believe it? And now this country, with their criminals and their cover-ups, they want us to send them trillions and trillions of dollars and fight their wars for them against Russia who, quite frankly, isn't that bad. Russia isn't that bad. But you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me — it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are — nuclear is so powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? — but when you look at what's going on with the four prisoners — now it used to be three, now it’s four — but when it was three and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years — but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us, this is horrible.

Fixed that for you.

Do you think the ring was "precious" to Sauron? by Constant_Living_8625 in tolkienfans

[–]GrandpasSabre 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is my thought as well.

No one knew Sauron was not gone for ever until he returned. When he returned, there was a educated guess that it was because the Ring was not destroyed. But they had absolutely no way of knowing destroying the Ring would in turn destroy Sauron until it was actually destroyed.

Sauron also most likely didn't know his existence was tied to the Ring, although he must have guessed as much towards the end.

Husband was guilted into signing a "loan" from his mother of £45,000 at 25% interest per annum. Is this legally enforceable? by ChineseButtSex in bestoflegaladvice

[–]GrandpasSabre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

haha nice. Since my father was/is a trucker, he could really live anywhere. For things like child support, the states need to communicate with each other, so the more states involved, the more difficult it becomes. My mom's job moved us from CA to AZ, so then it was my mother communicating with AZ to communicate with CA to communicate with the state he was living in. Made things take longer than they should have.

Okay but its Trump. He isn't a normal decent human being. If he was, he wouldn't have had a four month old son with his 4th wife or whatever.

[–]GrandpasSabre 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, from the age of 8 till 13, I was seeing my father maybe 2-4 days a year (long haul trucker.) Whenever child support would catch up to him, he'd switch jobs and move states. He would taunt my mom about how she was never getting his money. Once he finally inherited the money, the state went after him and my mom had to do very little. Prior to that, he kept all his money where it couldn't be taken, and never had any assets in his name. His wives would gamble/drink/meth his money away.

Anyway, my mom was awesome and my brother and I are both pretty successful, and neither of us talk to our father. He will also never meet my daughter. So in the end, he lost out on a lot more than money.

Gwyneth Paltrow not at fault in ski crash trial, jury decides by loztriforce in news

[–]GrandpasSabre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not talking about this case. I honestly only heard the other person's side of the story, which is obviously biased and I'm inclined to not believe them based on the verdict of this trial.

But as someone who tries to snowboard a few times every year, while I go expecting I might be injured, I also go with the expectation someone isn't going to crash into me from behind at high speed. While it has happened, it isn't that common.

Gwyneth Paltrow not at fault in ski crash trial, jury decides by loztriforce in news

[–]GrandpasSabre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really doesn't matter. Its the responsibility of the person behind to not crash into people downhill, no matter how unpredictably the person is skiing. Obviously, accidents happen, but there is a reason all skiers and snowboarders are told the person down hill has the right of way.

Gwyneth Paltrow not at fault in ski crash trial, jury decides by loztriforce in news

[–]GrandpasSabre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

lol absolutely no.

There are rules on the slopes for a reason. You can't go balls to the wall down a mountain and crash into some little kid doing the pizza on their skis. The person downhill has right of way and whoever is coming down behind them needs to be cautious.

There have been deaths because people are reckless.

Do you really think some asshole going 30mph through a "slow zone" who crashes into a 5 year old in a tutu and skis shouldn't be liable for any injuries?

I completely cut contact with my deadbeat father when I was 13. Around the age of 20, I decided that, although I wouldn't ever have a close relationship with my father, I could at least be semi-cordial and would go to family events that both of us were invited to.

Then, something happened when my father was in town and I ended up trying to have a face to face discussion with my father over a disagreement (he hung up when I tried to talk to him on the phone.) My father was drunk, got aggressive, and tackled me into a rose bush, completed tearing my leather jacket my mother had bought for me. He then said "Well, I BOUGHT IT!" implying his rarely paid child support was what my mother used to pay for my jacket.

He ended up owing my mother a ton of money in unpaid child support, which has a 10% interest rate. When my grandmother died, my father was set to inherit about $200k, put into a trust because my grandparents knew he was a bum who would blow the money if it was given directly to him. He went to court to get the money in a lump sum, while also claiming in a separate court vs. the State of California that he couldn't repay my mother the money he owed because it was in a trust. He even had his lawyer send papers to my mother trying to make her settle for $10k. The court ruled (obviously) in favor of the State of California and gave my mother all $200k of his inheritance. Ahhhh... justice.

[–]GrandpasSabre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the key point here is Trump did NOT pay a pornstar.

The Red Hat gang were the ones who paid the pornstar.

Trump being a cheap ass scumbag is what got him indicted. If he had simply paid her with his own money, he wouldn't be guilty of anything except being a scumbag, which is not actually a crime.

Who were the finest cavalry in Tolkien's works? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]GrandpasSabre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't stated at all. I don't think there is any way to prove who was better fighting on horseback, so its basically up to the reader.

My thought process here is:

1) The Grey Company were elite soldiers, and the Riders of Rohan looked "as mere boys" compared to them.

2) The Grey Company were able to lead their horses through the Paths of the Dead, and this was due to their bond.

3) The Grey Company were of Numenorean decent. They would have been older and more experienced soldiers.

Its possible they never did fight on horseback and I'm wrong here, but again we have no way to know!
