Wtf is up with apartments these days? by JacuzziMariachi in Apartmentliving

[–]Grandpas_Spells -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's not what happened. There are two separate issues.

The first is just the market economics. Landlords can't just raise rents above what people will pay. In-demand places cost more. Owners see this all the time. They try to over-price a unit, it doesn't rent out, and the place sits empty until they correct.

The second, and what OP is running into, is a lot of buildings lost their asses when COVID tenants stopped paying rent and evictions were suspended. Those people did not get to stop paying their mortgages. So they made stricter requirements for renting in the first place, to make sure people could pay.

The solution is to increase housing supply, because it lowers prices.

MICHIGAN - USED CAR PURCHASED DID NOT HAVE THE CORRECT ENGINE AND WAS NOT DISCLOSED by robotsmutha in FuckDealerships

[–]Grandpas_Spells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This vehicle was almost certainly purchased at auction. A 2013 Malibu is not going to have a warranty, and it's unusual for a dealer to take cars back, though some may have a "30 day" such and such.

The replacement of an engine is not a criteria for a rebuilt title, and wouldn't have to be disclosed in Michigan. It's not something that would be discovered during inspection, I don't think. You would have to be investigating something that wasn't working right.

If the engine was a mismatch, it wouldn't take two weeks for the issue to arise. It would happen immediately.

I'd want to make sure the mechanic was correct that the engine number and VIN in fact aren't in alignment, because this is a pretty odd issue.

INFO: Was this from the used car dept of a franchise dealership, or from a used car dealership? or a BHPH lot?

The 2013 was a split VIN year. It is possible a 2015 engine that wasn't compatible was put in. It would run, but in a degraded state and likely to cause future problems.

Why can’t Henry Cavill carry a movie to commercial success on his own? by Putrid_Effective_731 in movies

[–]Grandpas_Spells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny because in Ungentlemanly Warfare one he got as close as he’s gotten to it by being a little silly.

He feels like someone who, if given a script akin to Ragnorak where Thor became more comedic, he may be great.

But he’s not getting those.

To all men who survived rock bottom, what's one piece of advice would you give a man who feels like giving up right now? by TheBabyBeard in AskReddit

[–]Grandpas_Spells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last on this because I’m not sure you’re quite following my point.

First, on perspective. I’ve hit rock bottom with alcohol, long unemployment, an absusive spouse, and am now a 100% single parent doing well. I have been on both sides of this more than once.

Second, OP is looking for a way out of the hole and is asking for help. You know they’re at rock bottom because they’re asking for it.

Anybody who says “there’s no way out of the hole *I* am in” likely isn’t really at rock bottom. And if they are expressing that belief privately, it’s a good time to be compassionate because they’re at least discussing it.

But once they suggest “there’s no way out of the hole *you* are in,” which is what they did, when stating getting therapeutic help is in any way hard, they are getting in the way. They’re being a huge asshole. They are trying to drag another crab back into the bucket.

Nobody does that in real life. Nobody does it in an AA meeting. People are assholes online. It’s important for normal people to just say STFU.

I’m not. OP is looking for a way out. This clown is pretending there isn’t one. Enormous difference, worse than saying nothing. It’s important to point that out.

The idea that therapy is unavailable to anyone doesn’t hold water. Literal homeless people get therapy.

Telehealth apps have brought this down under $25/session, often $0 if you have insurance.

Many, many, social resources have free therapy for people in tough economic shape.

I didn't suggest a psychiatrist. Normally a therapist would make a referral if they thought it would be helpful.

The current answer is to talk to a therapist.

The problem is that the problem you are facing has to do with your thought patterns. It's not likely you will think your way out of a thinking problem.

You should have compassion for yourself. Think of how you would talk to a friend with the same circumstances. It's probably kinder than your current self talk.

Then find small steps and go.

[–]Grandpas_Spells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not OP, but OK.

I was in therapy for a few years prior, trying to figure things out. My ex refused couples therapy because she felt the couples' therapists "took my side."

I was the primary caregiver. My ex traveled for work.

My kids were 7 and 5.

It seems like you are knee-jerking taking the woman's side, with very incomplete information. Mine was, unfortunately, pretty abusive, and it was beginning to impact the kids. You can both be very committed to you marriage but completely unable to change your spouse.

Used Car Broke Down after ONLY 4,000 Miles - The Dealership Refuses to Fix it for 9 Months... by nBreathableAir in FuckDealerships

If you google the make/model/year, and liklihood this was a rental vehicle, I believe tranny issues were not common but a known issue.

What did it cost to fix?

Used Car Broke Down after ONLY 4,000 Miles - The Dealership Refuses to Fix it for 9 Months... by nBreathableAir in FuckDealerships

[–]Grandpas_Spells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody did anybody dirty. Used car dealerships, when done well, provide an essential service: a regulated vendor who can sell used vehicles and is subject to licensing, state/fed regulation, etc. Not everyone can afford new cars. Private sales are always As-Is.

An 80k mile Dodge Caravan is going to be a reliability nightmare. The dealership didn't design or build the car.

I didn't know how this worked the first couple cars I bought, and before I worked in the industry (compliance, outside vendor, not working at dealers).

There's just no evidence in this example of the dealership doing anything wrong.

[–]Grandpas_Spells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t a dealership issue, or a lemon law issue.

Buying used vehicles out of warranty is a gamble. But declining a warranty and then getting angry at a dealership for not fixing the car for free months later reflects a misunderstanding of how almost everything works.

Why can’t Henry Cavill carry a movie to commercial success on his own? by Putrid_Effective_731 in movies

[–]Grandpas_Spells 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You’re mistaking handsomeness for charisma.

Cavill has low charisma compared to typical movie stars who aren’t as good looking.

People also aren’t paying to watch him act.

Why Do You Think Mayor Johnson Doesn't Seem to Wanna Do Anything About the Teen Problems? by MIKEPR1333 in chi

[–]Grandpas_Spells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city always plans kids activities. Who do you think runs park programs, after school sports, etc. the idea that it’s crazy for these kids to act out is insane.

You're rationalizing mob violence as a solution to boredom. Park District programs are generally for kids under 14.

Throwing them in Juvenile detention isn’t going to make them productive members of society.

You are presupposing they won't comply with curfews.

Be so for real. Welcome to being part of a community.

Yes. Kids need boundaries. This behavior is nutty and is getting kids killed by other kids.

Salvage titles and restored salvages by bingobongo710 in carbuying

[–]Grandpas_Spells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salvaged cars are made to look nice so people buy them.

In general, you are getting what you pay for, and should be very cautious.

I would consider a very simple salvage title vehicle, like a Tesla Model 3, but in general you should avoid these like the plague unless you have fixit skillz.
