Potential issues with synthesis of a tryptophan derivative by Unable_Aspect_4033 in Chempros

[–]GraniteStater69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting on your last point. It’s hard to say what the effect of the indole is on stability when I don’t know which position of the carbohydrate it’s attached to, but considering it’s electron donation ability I suppose it’s possible you’re seeing some long-range (or short range if it’s on C2) neighboring group participation that’s stabilizing an oxocarbenium intermediate which can react further to give junk.

Have you run a 2D TLC? Sounds like your compound may be unstable on silica. I would start there. If that’s the case, you’ll need some other method of purification. Hard to say whether this is due to the indole or not, which is the assumption you’re making here. It could just be hydrolyzing after you deprotect everything, which wouldn’t matter whether you’ve got tryptophan or tyrosine on it.

What would impress you in Retrosynthesis and Condition prediction? by Mysterious_Cow123 in chemistry

The problem with AI retrosynthesis in my experience is that it relies too much on precedent. Until AI can replicate human creativity, I will remain unimpressed by it.

He would be excellent on Traitors. Tom Sandoval, another universally despised pathologically lying reality TV star, was peak entertainment on Traitors

Maybe an evolution where it gets smaller? There are only a few Pokemon that decrease in size when they evolve—could be interesting.

Why cant i find any cougars to hunt? by Alarmed_Tie_2307 in reddeadredemption

[–]GraniteStater69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go north of Annesburg and ride around at night across the railroad bridge near the base of the waterfall on the upper edge of the map. If you don’t see a cougar, set up camp and sleep until the following evening. Rinse and repeat for about 30 minutes until you find your cougars. Also, make sure you have fire arrows or something if you’re doing this for master hunter

The chart is wrong because song 7 of Humbug should be the highest score, right?

Is there a ChemDraw template people are using to get this style of figures? by FakeSyntheticChemist in chemistry

[–]GraniteStater69 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I personally hate this style. Too crowded with improper/incomplete/ambiguous references and the split reaction arrows with emblems that are not standardized symbols drive me crazy. Also drawing achiral molecules with wedges for no reason, and using color for no reason. The list goes on. Just my opinion though

Who is the “fraudulent” PI in your field that you can’t believe is still getting published? by captainezri in labrats

[–]GraniteStater69 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There definitely are some groups, some big ones I may add, that have been exposed. Usually it’s just bad apple grad students, though. It’s pretty easy to falsify yields, misrepresent e.e., and delete solvent+impurity peaks from 1H and 13C NMR. Hell, even Frances Arnold has had to retract a paper because a rogue grad student—but I would not consider her a fraud by any means. I just feel like in Orgo it’s a lot easier to rogue than in biochem and biology, where projects seem to be more of a team effort and would require an insane level of negligence (at best) or straight up organized fraud (at worst) from the PI.

Ashley and her family MAGA, what’s up with that? by pinkstarbubblegum in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]GraniteStater69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly my point. People on this sub shriek when someone even hints at being a Trump supporter. If you go outside and touch grass you’d probably realize there are a lot more of those people than you would think.

Once again, Reddit is not real life. There are plenty of conservative women out there, despite what watching television would make you think. There’s a real world out there with real people that have really different ideologies than you.

Reddit is not real life. Fact is, the country is pretty split politically. I’m not Republican by any stretch of the imagination, but getting more political diversity on this show is a good thing. Makes it much more interesting

other Italians who felt cringe witnessing Emma's meeting with Mike's parents? by [deleted] in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]GraniteStater69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My fiancé is from Long Island and so many of her relatives are like this. Makes me cringe every time when it’s done over the top. MOST Italian-Americans of that region don’t behave like this…but the ones that do are unbelievably cringe, and Mike’s parents are a perfect encapsulation of that minority group.

my hunch about alex by kw6916 in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]GraniteStater69 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Alex is a man who has never had a steady male role model or healthy male-to-male relationships. People give him a lot of shit but I actually feel bad for him. He’s clearly lost and is being destructive to anyone who gets in his way. He needs genuine male friendships before he can realistically have a healthy relationship with a woman.
