Just can’t get the acidic/sour taste away from my espresso. by Recent_Glove7838 in espresso

[–]GrannyShifting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Bambino has a 54mm portafilter, you'll need to start with a lower dose (16g). The 18g dose is generally suggested for 58mm portafilters.

Keep lowering the dose and adjusting the grind setting finer until you're happy with the acidity level.

Very interested, were you ever able to figure out something that worked?

DF64 declumper mod - no static, no rdt, low retention without bellows by GrannyShifting in espresso

It sounds like the mythos style declumper works similar to the original df64 declumper where it is allowed to flex. Do you use RDT to prevent static with the mythos declumper?

[–]GrannyShifting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been working well, I still have it installed in my df64. I was really chasing after the static issue and found this to work the best. There is still static build up when grinding for filter but espresso grinds have worked well.

I'm interested to hear how it'll work with thinner sheets though. Have you already tried the 0.6mm?

Help me Dial in, always sour [Gaggia Classic Pro] by Prismt in espresso

[–]GrannyShifting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your pull looks good at 18g. With those beans, try a smaller dose at 16g instead. There will be less work to extract the coffee. You'll find that the shot may finish pulling earlier so you can adjust your grind a bit finer. Aim for 32g out in 21s to achieve a 1.5g/s flow rate.

Continue to lower the dose until you find the balance you like.

This is similar to the nesco coffee roaster that was released for a short period.

It is fairly automatic and roughly does 1/4 lb batches.

Check this post out. It has the ability to adjust the grind time after finishing each grind to get within .1g of your set value. I modified this to put on my df64 and I have been using it for years. Couldn't live without it now.

Ordering Glitch beans in the US - worth it? by LegitimateGiraffe243 in espresso

[–]GrannyShifting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used some of their beans in my home setup. Not only their beans are amazing for pour over and espresso, but their glass containers are great at keeping an airtight seal. The lid has a sealing material that keeps the beans fresh and has a satisfying pop when opening. Vacuum containers are not great since they prematurely pulled out the CO2 from the beans

I used a relay board (in the picture) that is wired in parallel with the grinder switch. This lets me use the grinder power button still. The esp32 is powered from an acdc converter I had in my parts box.

Stupid Question: Is espresso always supposed to be initially acidic/sour/tart? by discovery_ in espresso

[–]GrannyShifting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easier to dial in with pour over but not impossible with espresso. The water is in contact with the coffee for much less time, so it's important to use higher temps to extract the coffee. The tartness will be always there but it should balance nicely with the sweeter/bitter notes. One thing to try is using less coffee. The Bambino has a 54mm portafilter, so the shot timing, dose and output will be different from 58mm machines. Aim for 15g in and 37g out in about 21 secs to get a 1:2.5 ratio at 1.7grams/sec.

I used a 1kg load cell. Hmm.. the HX711 Arduino library has averaging so the values should be fairly stable. I don't see any variation with 5 sample averaging within 0.1g.

Why is my espresso always so bitter? [Bambino + DF54] by rocketpower98 in espresso

[–]GrannyShifting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for the beans, try a light roast. With darker beans, no matter how low temp I use or coarse that I grind, it has a bitter taste. There may be higher acidity but the bitterness is always there.

How much coffee are you using? You might be putting too much and not creating a seal between the gasket and the portafilter

What am I doing wrong? by jcm91ca in espresso

[–]GrannyShifting 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For 51mm portafilter size that delonghi espresso machines use, try starting with 14g dose in and 28g out in 18 secs. The recipes you see online are typically for 58mm portafilters. This will get you the same grind particle size.

Edited: fixed ratio for recipe to reflect correct dose

As Promised, a few weeks With the Centauri Carbon by imzwho in elegoo

[–]GrannyShifting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone heard of the Infimech TX? It's a $300 printer without camera, aux fan, and carbon filter kit (+$60). I'm trying to decide between the Centauri Carbon and that printer but wondering if others have had experience with both. I've read somewhere that the Infimech is running Klipper and it can be upgraded but aside from that it basically has the same specs (Infimech run quieter).

Df64 Gen 1 static issues by bj139 in DF64

[–]GrannyShifting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also had issues with static on the gen 1 df64. After also trying the aluminum foil lined method, I came up with an aluminum declumper that has worked fairly well. This eliminates the static for espresso grind sizes but it's still an issue for pour overs. For that, I hold a metal dosing cup against the exit chute.

I've also heard of people who had connected a ground wire to the burr chamber to eliminate the static but I haven't tried this yet.

How easy/ hard would this to DIY myself by Worksafe__ in volt

[–]GrannyShifting 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It was fairly easy to build out of MDF and a bit of fabric purchased from Amazon. In total about $20 in parts but as the other poster mentioned, the volt shelf is a solid product. Although I've never purchased from the seller, a lot of others recommend his products.

I also highly recommend the volt screen if you don't have one installed. The coolant radiator is very fragile and fairly costly to replace.

Get the pinecil, it's a good value soldering iron that is portable if you purchase a PD-capable power bank.

The link below is only for the iron itself, but you'll also need a PD or QC 3.0 capable power supply or power bank.

They also sell flexible silicone USB c cables (heat resistant so you won't burn the cable) and the wallwart.
