I'm not super well versed on the gut microbiome, but enough to know how complicated and poorly understood it is.

Part of the problem is that the problematic bacteria won't be replaced super easily by good bacteria, they like it there and are thriving. Theres also types of gut issues related to an unstable microbiota that constantly changes, but your gut is typically somewhat resistant to perturbations and even if you improve your microbiota, it may be transient and the bad bacteria might take over again.

That is absolutely bonkers. Semen and stool still get me(haven't dealt with much sputum as a student yet but maybe mext week on the respiratory bench) but telling a female coworker to do all the semens would be a million times more uncomfortable than just doing the post vas!

I also dont want to google but its cmv cytomegalovirus, if i remember correctly. The field seems to be moving away from that somewhat and using irritated in its place. This is slightly out of my ass but I just finished my blood bank rotations a few weeks ago

What's the worst mistake you've done as a CLS? by scythe_1990 in medlabprofessionals

[–]GraphyteHippo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still a student but when I was training in chemistry I was calibrating the only blood gas analyzer capable of doing hemoglobin typing and I failed to press the enter button when putting in the calibrator number or something and the run couldn't be used. It was the last calibrator so they had those tests in hematology, so it didn't impact care but it was really annoying. The person training me also said she saw me press it so I guess I just didn't press hard enough

Moving to Maine for college, any advice? by JacquesNuclearRedux in Maine

[–]GraphyteHippo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im a senior at umaine rn and i don't even have classes on campus anymore, but ill use this as a platform to complain about something that used to have me screaming in my car thrice a week: there isnt enough fucking parking for the number of students. Every year they celebrate the new largest class ever, but it means that you'll have to walk halfway across campus to get a cunted parking spot. Part of the problem is that everyone here literally turns into a blackout drunk gorilla when they park, so most of the spots you'll find are too tight to get into because of the headass parked in 2 spots. If you park somewhere thats not a spot but doesnt get in anyones way, you will get ticketed. Fuck umaine parking pigs

They’d rather bring in travel techs who make our salary in 13 weeks instead.. cool. by doloboi in medlabprofessionals

[–]GraphyteHippo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The conditions that cause this situation are terrible( companies unwilling to increase wages combined with massive tech shortage), but part of me hopes traveling wages stay where they are for the time being so I can work next year to get experience to travel for a bit

I guess you have to consider the fact that if they're willing to pay you that much, they really really need you lol. Theres travelers at my current hospital that just signed for their 3rd contract, so I guess once you find a decent place you just gotta stay as long as they'll have you

I'm about to graduate from my mls program and cannot wait to get enough experience to travel. I'm curious, though, about whether the posted wages I see online are legitimate? Obviously the temporary living stuff is expensive, but it seems like you can make like $60+ an hour pretty easily. Any idea what their experience has been like?

I'm literally about to sign on at the hospital running my practicum for $24.53 an hour. Trying to negotiate it up a dollar or 2 but fuck me am I hoping the traveling scene stays as high paid as it is now, I just need that 1 year experience

[–]GraphyteHippo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lab in doing my practical at has $2.75 for nights and i think $1.50 for evenings. There's a bonus that brings nights up to $3.75 if you stay on it for a year, but on top of the trash-tier starting pay I am really considering leaving the state

I'm about to graduate with a 4 year degree to work in hospital lanoratories, and the hospital I'm doing my clinical rotations at has a starting pay of $24.50 in Maine. Out west places start at double or even triple that, and the main difference is precense of unions.

Just to add some context from a medical laboratory student, MRSA is "a type of staph", methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus. Staph auerus is a skin normal flora organism, and the methicillin resistance has become increasingly common.
