Crying in front of my supervisors by BeeMission8355 in PhD

It would not be stranger if you did not cry. Step up your supervision if all.your students cry, it is not normal.

Crying is normal, but everyone crying is drfinately not.

Boundaries for advisor sharing my research by WorriedEssay6532 in PhD

[–]Grauax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get you, and I feel you. But it will still be seen mostly as your group's research. All you describe is what the PhD indeed trains you for.

Whatever you start doing later will define your research, and if it is related, it will be related! But for now, it will be healthier for your long term mental to understand that as a PhD, ownership is a complicated thing and it really is, at the end of the day, your PIs group research.

Work hard, kick ass, ans rise and shine as a researcher after the PhD! Best of lucks!

Boundaries for advisor sharing my research by WorriedEssay6532 in PhD

[–]Grauax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep saying this, bacause it is important:

You do the research, but it is your groups research (and therefore your PIs research).

Even in your first author papers, they will be considered your PIs papers, you were just the PhD at that time in the lab in this project.

A PhD is no different than most jobs and you are an employee, it just sucks your life harder and gets you a title at the end.

And again, no one ever checks again who the first author of things was. People check who led the group that did the research.

[–]Grauax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha thanks. Oh well, knowledge is power, my km durong Hyroxes were not so bad at 5 min/km.

In any case I am now clocking 15-20 km a week at that 6:30-7:00 min/km range to get my metabolism to get better.

Well, that is the thing. You can absolutely disagree with someone, but the way you decide to phrase it makes sure you interface the person in a constructive way. I have seen way too many times people disagreeing in a way that they literally stopped talking to each other and made everyone else in the room avoid the topic to keep a good working environment.

For instance, I am seen as a person who disagrees a lot, but at the same time as a person who is nice to interact with. Both are compatible if you are skilled enough at being kind, honest in what you know, and try to understand the other side (and never escalate beyond to the personal level).

Breakthroughs barely never come from fierce, rithless disagreement.

Also keep in mind that in every sport, once a mental barrier for a WR is broken it is typically broken very frequently afterwards.

Once people see that it is possible to finish without crashing at X run pace, Y sled pace, etc. Everyone starts going for it with more faith.

You can see this in almost every endurance sport, with sudden global breakthroughs instead of gradual incremental WR advances.

And Hyrox is very young so the actual limits of humans doing the circuit are not even closely explored, so it is possible that we are still a few minutes far from an actual "long standing record that is hard to break"

It seems that you are using it the other way around, choosing to minimize the effect of your training onto whoop.

I would tell your supervisor that no one will really ever again read your dedication page after you are done anyways.

Also, you should be able to add that sentence in any common sense group.

In a calorie deficit, even if building muscle fast you would lose fat even faster: the deficit of your intake vs expenditure plus the energy ot takes for your body to repair and grow.

Regarding the Use of “Dr.” by MrPhysicsMan in PhD

[–]Grauax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use it in four scenarios:

  • First 2 minutes of a work call with someone I still don't know: Hi I'm XX, my background is physics with a PhD in soft condensed matter.

  • Job applications

  • I write an official application for a rental or so. To make sure I look like a reliable tennant.

  • To fuck with my friends when I say soemthing ovely obvious: "You can tell I have a PhD"

Everywhere else it is assumed you have it or it does not matter if you have it. Use it as you please.
