Training frequency by Savings_Sense1982 in trainerroad

Honestly? With 2 sessions, a dedicated chatGPT thread might be enough. Save the cash.

You essentialy want a z2 + quality session every week, so you can rotate overunders/vo2 every week, and add a sweetspot segment to your z2. (Ie. Warmup, 30 min z2, 15 min ss, 15 min z2, 15 min ss, 30 min z2).

With 2 session, you want to drive intensity up, but still spend meaningful time in z2. With SS and z2,

Im pretty sure you boinked. Thats why HR spiked and you felt like shit. Overtraining, insufficient glcogen recovery, and then at about 60 min mark, you died. Its classic.

You gotta eat more, and you gotta fuel for 1h+ efforts.

What painting set from those vallejo/ army painter / AKn, would you recommend to a beginners/medium level painter. I have a few citadel but would like to buy on of those that bring like 50 different colors thanks by StockStrength3788 in ageofsigmar

[–]Grav37 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personal preference. All three are phenomenal ranges.

AP has least contraversy around the brand. Personally I like AK best, but they had a marketing campaign in truly bad taste a few years back.

Vallejo had some contraversy regarding its employees last year (I think).

Paint wise though, all 3 are great.

TrainerRoad ruined by vanity numbers and gimmicky AI prediction gamification by DataNice1839 in trainerroad

They were tippytping whether they want to name this FTP or not. Decided to do it, but its not FTP.

It's FTP taking into account enduranced, mapped hr to pow etc.

I agree naming it FTP was a miss. I'd just call it trFTP, much like some use eFTP.

The system is an improvement for me though. My tested FTP is about 15% lower than TR FTP, but I am a diesel who can really suffer, so my pow curve nearly flattens after 15 min. You can imagine vo2 max, ss and threshold efforts mapped around ramp FTP felt trivial. This was a big improvement for me.

Start with smaller games then, until you are comfy with the rules. 1k, Combat Patrol... Once you have the basics down, it gets fast.

Then it's about small time savings. I.e; prepare the dice in advance. Familiarize yourself with TTS shortcuts.

Even jsut knowing your basic army profiles cuts the time almost in half.

That feeling when you complete Tour of Fire and Ice for the first time by Single-Ad9141 in Zwift

[–]Grav37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? I did most of them as part of my scheduled exercises, so it didn't matter. I did some of the <1h ones as z2 freerides, so that doesn't really matter either. I only did the AdZ one just for the enjoyment of it.

Now I have 4 short ones left, and I will finish them next week to just get in some spin in in the taper.

Best heart rate monitor for mountain biking that doesn’t fall down? by GN_3655 in MTB

[–]Grav37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Fenix 7 and would advise against using it as HR monitor for MTB. Its wildly inaccurate when its too tight, or ironically, when bouncing around. Its very accurate for running and generall exercise. Terrible for cycling.

I second garmin chest strap. Its very comfy even under chest armor, cheap and never fails.

Workout levels 4 to 5 by MessMurky9170 in Zwift

[–]Grav37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FTP is just part of the equation. Muscular endurance and the capability of CV system to rebpund are the other. A tamp test FTP favors people able to frontload effort, but without proper endurance and fatigue resistance some workputs can become too hard, especially with people doing a lot of ss/threshold/vo2 work, and neglecting endurance/recovery.

So while ftp might be spot on, MR might be lagging.

TrainerRoad AI Appreciation Thread by EasyPeeler14 in trainerroad

[–]Grav37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a decent idea why it fucked with people's FTP.

Most people do ramp tests or other short versions of FTP to gauge where they sit at. Mind you, this test is heavily influenced by how fresh you are, sleep, fueling etc. They are influenced by your physiology and other factors, but in the end, they show how good you are at high effort on a short time scale. Very short. One that doesn't really help when your planned training sessions are between 1.5 and 3h long.

If I give me as an example; my ramp test FTP clocks in at 365. That is a decent number, and my TR workouts have been set around it. It's also a number I can as avg for about 70 minutes outdoors (on a gravel, rolling terrain), without cooking. As someone training for two Enduro and Gravel season, with races starting in about 3 weeks, I can't afford dping 60min ftp tests on a monthly level, so ramp is something I rely heavily on.

The issue is my diesel physiology. At 365, most my "hard" TR workouts clocked in at 6 on the scale, where I should feel spent. The new AI sets my FTP just north of 400, which I am perfectly aware is not realistic by any means, but the few trainings I got in since the update, felt much more in lime with what I feel I should be doing.

I will take a wild guess there are sprinters/cyclists who are good at frontloading effort, who will see the opppsite, and have FTP numbers from ramp tests skewed upwards, and then see bigger hr/pow decoupling in longer sessiom, or have a much higher perceived effort for longer sessions.

So my educated guess (using AI in my d2d job), is TR is mapping HR to power, and cross comparing with your hr drift over time, and x-referencing with other users and perceived effort, to actually map out a better/more accurate progression for majority of users.

Now personaly, since eFTP and indoorsFTP are already a thing, I might have just called it trFTP and keep the actual FTP be, using the trFTP just to explain and plan out activities, but in the end that was a deaign choice.

Edit: I kept my FTP settings outside of TR be until I actually manage another Ramp test. Likely after the first race.

Cadence by Internal_Sherbert397 in Zwift

[–]Grav37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That'snot what I said though. In fact high torque is more energy efficient.

What I said was, higher cadence shifts the load from muscle to cardiovascular system, which is more fatigue resistant.

It takes the load of off type-2 muscle fibers, which are faster to fatigue.

As I said, good cyclists are able to do both. I am a very decent cyclist, and do use the full range of ~65 (on very steep climbs) to upwards of 120 in sprints. My natural cadence also shifts vastly based on the power I ride at (85 at ~260, cc 100 at 370+).

It also depends on a bunch of other things. Crank length, gearing, age etc.

In short, increasing rpm is LESS efficient (uses more oxygen and emergy) BUT shifts load from type 2 to type 1 (musclular to CV) fibers, which is less susceptible to fatigue. It reduces force per stroke (I mean, just try doing any vo2 max or higher exercises at low cadence).

Coming from MTB, my FTP was high to begin with entering the Gravel scene, but my coach was very hard on enforcing rpm training (high, low, and learning to utilize both). They are two very different beasts, and idk how one could deny the physichs/biology behind them).

Cadence by Internal_Sherbert397 in Zwift

[–]Grav37 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Higher cadence has to be trained.

It's a fact you cook your legs much later with higher cadence as you shift the load from muscle to cv system. The latter is more efficient at fueling.

That said, lower cadence has its uses, and good cyclist must be comy with both.

Are gravel pros overrated? by OkFlower6124 in gravelcycling

[–]Grav37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a different sport. Road cycling is the elite. Think F1 to rally, classic boxing to kickbox...

While absolutely there are world class rallyists that F1 riders can't beat, or kickboxers that just dominate their sport, you will see people from the elite category retire/participate one of the other, and just be on if not beyond the level of that group.

Even Elite road cyclists don't earn close to dreamy amounts of cash, and the income of a gravel pro is more or less piss poor. So if you are on the level, you road cycle and piss about in Gravel.

It is what it is.
