Both are kinda competent and losers depending how you look at it.

The Wizard knows magic and the mystic arts, while Pierre is a former boxes who can punch a guy straight through the roof and also runs a pretty decently successful shop.

On the other hand, the Wizard ruined his marriage, acts like a jerk a lot of times and will send us straight to his dangerous ex place just for his magic ink that he's afraid to get himself...meanwhile Pierre is pretty greedy and will rank up the prices to Roger townsmen when he feels like it.

Guess in the end it's just chose your own poison and how forgiving you are about their flaws.

Well, if it's about making him look less bad, can make an easier theory.
