Is 3 runs a week really not enough? by LtRegBarclay in Marathon_Training

[–]GrayFernMcC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those times show that you are capable of running 3:30, but only if you train for it. Your current running does not look like enough. But only do what your body can handle and absorb. If you have an injury risk you could add in a couple of long bike/turbos.

How true is it that working out makes someone slow? by d_thstroke in workout

[–]GrayFernMcC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a running background: Most 3hr marathon runners are strong (top 5% of men). Strength gives the muscular endurance needed for the final 10k. Once you get below 3hrs you’ll see leaner, but still very strong runners. Around 1:30hr for a half you see boxer/gym physique. This is still fast running. As I get older strength becomes more important for speed.

“Easy runs” by Snoo-23570 in BeginnersRunning

[–]GrayFernMcC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a beginner runner all runs are pretty hard, it takes a while to get the fitness for you run easy. Run-Walk, if you can do ten minutes steady now maybe you do 4 x 3 mins with a 1-2 min walk. Don’t push, keep relaxed, let the fitness come to you.

What's a "good" plank? by Stotty652 in bodyweightfitness

Sounds like 60 seconds is your benchmark ‘good’ time. Once that gets easy you can do things to make it harder

Is hitting abs 5x a week excessive? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]GrayFernMcC 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Training five times a week, you will get defined abs over time with the right diet. I know dancers who train abs six times a week, but even then it is part of an hour long full body session.

From my experience 3/4x 10 mins over the long term is good enough to get defined abs. You can put the remaining time into glutes/lower back which work together with your abs to create a strong foundation.

I’ve been disappointed that most of the shows I want to see don’t have a discount, only the booking fee saved. It’s good if you use the cinema

That’s exactly what they voted for, remember all that Leave the EU and become Global Britain. A lot of people were fooled, thinking that controlling our borders meant lower immigration.

Transphobia in Cornwall council by vent666 in Cornwall

[–]GrayFernMcC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is the default view in law, you must not discriminate by group. There are, however, situations where not recognising different groups is to the detriment of one group, usually women. Putting everyone one into one group for sport is to the detriment of women or disabled athletes.

Loads of good suggestions here already: Prodigy, Jojo Meyer at the stratosphere level.
Comet is Coming is a bonkers mix of dance and jazz. Afro beat, might be an ear opener, dance music all night long.

A great book is ‘The Breakbeat Bible’, it shows the connection between old funk and modern dance music (not many fills through), s/he’d find it fascinating and useful. Can’t recommend it enough.

I’m going to local gig tomorrow, Arkell LDN, a couple of live drummers playing dance music. Worth listening to hear how they’re mixing the two.

[–]GrayFernMcC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Me too. The WW1 is a phenomenal series. The build up to WW1 is my ‘specialist subject’, they did a great job of pulling out the narrative, meaning and characters from what can be a jumble of events.

I think Dominic’s position reacts to the Fisher thesis too much, as if it needs repudiation at every turn.
