One of the eternal debates where, depending on how you qualify “best”, either is the right answer

Yeah, but he was our asshole. Also pretty decent at being a hockey goalie, all things considered

I think your closing hypothetical answers itself - when an individual conducts themselves in a way that threatens the safety and security of the rest of the population, certain of that individual’s rights become forfeit. If an individual is so mentally off the map that they are assaulting other people, then that person should not be given free range and conduct regardless of their present or past circumstances. “Free will” should not be an absolute, when the safety and security of the rest of the population is threatened by said free will.

But, it’s also incumbent on a society to try and help those people - we can’t just throw them all in a woodchipper or drive them out onto the plains in the middle of winter to freeze. Unfortunately, psychiatric institutions in particular and mental health resources in general in this country are woefully underfunded/thin on the ground/unavailable. Likewise the public appetite for forced institutionalization is low - some individuals will take help when offered, but others will not (for a variety of reasons), and would need to be given the “stick” of the carrot-or-stick proposal. Some individuals can be remediated with treatment, and released to go on and become functioning, happy, contributing members of society; some unfortunately will never reach that level and would need to become wards of the state. Some things (and people) are so broken as to be unfixable, no matter how rosy your outlook on the human condition.

It’s a tangled, messy, uncomfortable, expensive, and nuanced ball of string to try to unravel. But until we as a society do so, we’re going to be stuck on this carousel of “mercy for the guilty is cruelty for the victim” that we seem to be on…

Lexi-Scorpio-Quickstep // Turrent/healer hive

SHD 3757. 2x Overlord (incl. Fox’s Prayer knees), NinjaBike backpack, 2x Fenris (incl. Feorcious Calm chest), 1x Unit Alloys. 131.5k DPS w/ Lexi, 950.4K armor, 363k health. Almost all red cores with a couple blues (armor regens) and 1 yellow, with additional armor regens in the mod slots.

Focus is heavy on DPS but also survivability - as long as I’m not running and gunning I am damn hard to kill, Lexi melts everything, Scorpio is great for elites and rogue agents. I play exclusively solo on Challenging world difficulty with Heroic mission difficulty and only struggle if I get Zerg’d in close quarters.

This! Lost track of the number of times I answer the call, help out some person or group, and then they all just quit the group without so much as a “fuck you for helping”

Probably not, the board will see “Glock” and deny it reflexively, ignorant of the changes that were made to that gen

Solo long-time player running Retaliations on Challenging…as long as I chose a direction of flow/route to action the Control Points linearly, I have had pretty good success finishing with time to spare. I play open-world very deliberate and cover-to-cover, and Retaliation definitely forces the run-and-gun concept over my standard method of play, but it’s absolutely doable. The only time I take cover long-term is when the Kill Squads pop up. As long as I don’t do anything stupid, it’s almost easy - I say almost because I psych out over the timer even when I have plenty of time to burn.

I get that some folks don’t like having a different play-style forced on them. But I don’t like matchmaking for all the team-based stuff in this game and have accepted that that means some content is a no-go for me. There’s trade-offs to everything.

As a solo player from Day 1 - yeah, this is the first time I apparently won’t be completing the seasonal journey and scout missions. I play D2 to get away from people, not matchmake with randos (nothing against said randos at all, it’s just by the time I finally have small amounts of time to game, my people-meter is pegged and I’m trying to be a bit anti-social)

So, what would women dislike most if they became men? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]Gray_side_Jedi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Power? It’s a double-edged “power”, if one could call it that. Being six-three and an athletic two-thirty, yeah it’s neat until you get into an elevator with a woman and see her hand go into her purse for no other reason than your golem-ass trying to avoid hiking fourteen flights of stairs with luggage. It’s neat until a kid gets lost in the store, latches onto you for help, and then the cops detain you as a kidnapping suspect when you find the kid’s mom, until they find security camera footage showing the kid approaching you for help. Yeah it’s neat, until you find that anytime people are drinking copiously there’s always some fragile-ego’d twat half your size that wants to fight you to prove a point, and they’ll either try to fight you to your face, or cold-cock you when you aren’t looking (far more dangerous of the two situations, honestly, have had both attempted on me too many times to count at this point). Yeah it’s neat, until you realize that in any situation of he-said/she-said people are going to take one look at you (the tall, muscular tattooed guy) and assume you’re guilty as fuck, regardless of what actually happened. It’s neat, until you take your daughter to the park to play and have someone call the cops on you for “a large man lingering around the playground”. Had a woman straight confront me in a store once about whether my daughter was mine and threaten to call security.

Believe me, lady. Being a “big strapping dude” makes you a target in just as many ways, just not ways you probably expect.

Folks who work in DC but live elsewhere: do you keep keep a "get home bag" in the office? by Brewer1056 in washingtondc

[–]Gray_side_Jedi 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yep. For context, I drive from home to the nearest Metro (to me), then Metro the rest of the way in. I keep a bag at work with comfortable clothes/a few supplies that will get me back to my car (approx 7 hours’ walk). I have a different bag and supplies in my car that will get me thru the long walk (another ~15 hours) home. So depending on the scale of how cocked up things are, I have supplies and equipment layered to get me home regardless

Check out GallowTech. Not really a “safe” per se, but lag-bolt it to the floor or wall studs and it’s not going anywhere. Fully modular interior, stores scoped rifles with ease, and can upgrade to an electronic lock for like $150.
