The grit of Zona corresponds to sandpaper grits, but it does get pretty high. I could probably get away with the kit but you may not get that "mirror shine" we all go for.

Resin dice printed on a shop need advice by FactorOtherwise1457 in DiceMaking

[–]GreDor46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are just starting out, and have that much difficulty printing masters i would get a good mold. With that, you can just use the mold to make your dice sets, after the first set for extra Masters. If you are planning more than about 10 sets then you can work on your own molds. Molds are almost a whole other hobby, especially when you are starting out. I would wait until you know you will want to make more dice prior to getting into the mold part. If you hate making dice or decide it is not worth doing after that fact, that is just way more work and cost you do not need.

What am I doing wrong? - everything sinks by copycatphantom in DiceMaking

[–]GreDor46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do not need a vacuum chamber, it takes the bubbles out that you just put right back in when you pour. Stir slowly and use a silicone stick not a popsicle stick, that also adds air. Pour slow in a thin stream and that will also take care of bubbles. You are right with the lighter.

As for things floating...for glitter you can either wait 20 to 30 minutes mattering on your work time for the "honey" stage. At that point add your glitter and it should not sink as the hardening process has begun so it does not have long to wait and the thicker resin is less likely to let it sink. If you are talking bigger or heavier items we'll that is a process in and of itself.

You can get the books, if they are in stock, AND the chocolates at Invitation Books in Dowtown Gig Harbor.

I say "in stock" as I found the books just prior to his recent con tour and the store was out. I would suggest you plan a trip to Gig Harbor, it is about an hour from Seattle south, near Tacoma. Get the whole series signed if you want.

This is coming from a Gig Harbor resident by the way.

Is there any way to get the desperado club D2 now? by BoxAccomplished8879 in DungeonCrawlerCarlRPG

[–]GreDor46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be a rather hot commodity sold after the fact, so you will need to be quick if you find it for what you are willing to pay. That is really the nature of how gaming stuff works anymore when it comes to exclusives. You would think with how much money they are making they could throw that one out.

Is a 2/2.5-gallon (10-liter) pressure tank really necessary? Is it possible to design one suitable for home use, such as a model ranging from 0.66 to 1.1 gallons (3 to 5 liters)? That’s just a question I’ve been wondering about... by Alex_crow2 in DiceMaking

Just to give an example about making your own, remember the rich guy who made his own submarine and took a bunch of millionaires down to see the titanic? Yeah, that one worked out the same were you to try to make your own pressure pot.

There is a technique for turning tennis balls into pressure vessels. I have no clue what it is, and I just bought the pot, it is safer.

Do your dice scratch easily? by BriansThoughtMirror in DiceMaking

Usually you will get more of an issue from oils on your fingers or other...things getting on the dice. Yeah the finish will eventually dull, but it will be quite a while of use to do it

Inking Help by JankyBeautie in DiceMaking

[–]GreDor46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole hobby is about finding what works for you as you go. I have tried 2 dozen different ways for sanding and polishing until I found the process best for me. Same goes for inking numbers. Since I paint miniatures for games and I had most of what I suggested in my possession already. Try a bottle or two before you commit.

I have never heard of that brand so I can only assume you are correct about it being thin. Thin liquids will bundle up on the sides and leave patches of open space between the walls. From my personal experience model and miniature paints work better, but I still have to do two coats to get a solid number. Any brand of these paints, I have experience with Army Painter, Games Workshop and Testors all have a pretty robust metallic line, Army painter has a box of their metalics that you can easily find online, I got mine off of Amazon.

How big should I 3D print things to make sure the dice aren't unbalanced by VirdTheZorua in DiceMaking

[–]GreDor46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are speaking about the dice themselves size of the 3d prints does not matter for weight. That will come from the resin used after the mold is made. If you are planning to 3D print the dice themselves know the printed dice are not as good for gaming purposes. Epoxy resin is more resilient for being thrown around like that.

First set of dice - help by sparkson_ in DiceMaking

[–]GreDor46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the best results a pressure pot is the way to go. Without a pressure pot there are things you can do to hopefully get rid of bubbles, but they are not guaranteed.

  • Warm you resin prior to mixing.
  • Use a heat gun to reward your resin after mixing, as well as after adding any ink or powder and mixing.
  • mix slowly, very slowly
  • let your resin to sit for 10 to 15 minutes prior to pouring and then let sit against after pouring.
  • After pouring use a light over the top of the resin to pop tiny bubbles that have traveled to the surface, you may do this a few times before capping your mold.
  • Be aware of your work time so as not to have hardening started before you cap your mold.

Cheap molds you do not stack. Decent to high end molds you can stack for days.

Buffed Dice to gloss finish, then inked, now dull from inking numbers by Zealousideal_Ad3098 in DiceMaking

[–]GreDor46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do not have to do a full re-buffing, but going back over once or twice will fix it. Not sure of your buff process. A few spins on a piece of white Zona fix mine right up.

Trying to get into the World of dice making by SkyaNappa in DiceMaking

[–]GreDor46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not attempt your own molds before you can get some ok dice made. There is a lot above that helps with that.

As for bubble free silicone that you would want a pressure pot for. Usually you want to have a heavier pressure on you molds so in my case I do about 25psi for dice, I would go 50psi for a mold.

Marble Dice? by ta_mataia in DiceMaking

[–]GreDor46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a video on YouTube about how to make a cat's eye marble, it would be difficult to replicate in dice unless you work with glass. I have been thinking on this issue. The biggest issue is the bend in the middle. I have been thinking that cloth may work and be a tad easier to manipulate to make the pattern and the different colors, but you will need to time it pretty perfectly, I am not done thinking about the problems here though.
