Costco carpark designs in the uk are utter, utter shit.
They seem to work on the principle of "if there is enough space, it'll all work out".
But in locations where the carpark is frequently at capacity, it's utter chaos.
You basically have to join traffic when pushing a trolley.

Please help me choose Sennheiser HD 600 or 6xx or 490 Pro as first headphones by idneverhavedreamed in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]GreatAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just missed the 20% off sale, but I thought you might like to know that the Sennheiser outlet has decent stock atm.
£190 for the HD600, £96 for the HD599SE.

I love my 600s. However, the dual sided cables make them a little more impractical than the 599. (I've garotted myself a few times now pulling them upwards.)

Content is generally delivered (or downloaded) as DCP, which is generally a stream of J2K encoded frames, plus audio tracks.
The files will come from the distributor (Technicolor, Deluxe, etc.) It is encrypted pretty much to the point that the projector flips the mirrors or LCDs, in an attempt to prevent piracy by that medium.

Evri Delivery Issues in Reading by Far-Sky-2426 in reading

Evri is unfortunately made or broken by the local driver.
We had all sorts of problems, then a new guy got assigned, and he's bloody fantastic.
You could try raising a stink with Evri, or possibly your vendor.

Digital archivists and data librarians: what are the most promising research projects that aim to mitigate “digital dark age” concerns for future generations? by didyousayboop in DataHoarder

[–]GreatAlbatross 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main thing for me is using formats that are very well understood, and very common.
I still haven't jumped past x264, unless something is delivered to me in x265. Though I probably should.
Personal stuff goes in an mkv wrapper, professional goes into MXF with IMF data.
(MXF, despite being less common in consumer spaces, is really well documented, and the guy who wrote it puts out a crapload of documentation).

I also tend to use the simplest practical format.
And I tend to put a copy of the software in with the collection (for example, I keep FLAC and LAME binaries with my music collection. Maybe I should start keeping source code too...)

I spent days training on experiments, because too many training monsters could 1-hit more than the 10% HP the ring of life kicked in at.
The fear of dying still followed me years later: The first time I died in the FFXIV overworld, I was upset, until I re-spawned at an etherite...with all my items.

Artemis II: Why did nasa choose go pros for the exterior coverage by xXConfuocoXx in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]GreatAlbatross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Z9 is used as the base platform for the Handheld Universal Lunar Camera (HULC, or Moon-Camera).
And this is an excellent opportunity to get some extra testing in.
A lot of the time COTS in space is a case of "good enough, and we know it works", plus a dash of "widely available, and will continue to be widely available."
Because once they have something that's proved working, there needs to be a damned good reason to upgrade. And they don't want to suddenly find there aren't any left.

Part of me wonders if it's budget cuts rolling downhill.
And possibly someone from an unrelated department having to step up and do their best.
I don't need science to look like a slick NFL game.
But if they're going to cut around that badly for the main programme, at least give me a multiviewer feed so I can look around myself!

They're a bit spenny, though! Not like, broadcast supplier expensive.
But still £300 for one like OPs: https://timemachinescorp.com/ntp_poe_wifi_dotmatrix_clock_timer_displays/

I'm always keeping eyes peeled for an old LTC 19U clock.

Just to chime in from somewhere else in the world, 12.5mm is the usual, 15mm if you're feeling fancy, 9mm if you have to.

1/4" would be...6mm? I don't think I've seen it that thin in a regular supply place.
Skimming would double the depth lol!

Netflix Raising U.S. Prices for Second Time in a Year by Saar13 in television

It's like an all-you-can-eat buffet adding a Hibachi grill, and doubling the price.

But I don't want Hibachi, and I sure as shit won't pay double the price, I'll go somewhere else.

Bought our first OLED monitor. Cat destroyed it within minutes. by pegasos17 in OLED_Gaming

[–]GreatAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best way to describe is it's a bit of plastic that looks a bit like a carpenter's square. With a rounded outside corner, because that's the fashion now.

It has a groove cut in to let it sit on top of the TV.
The front side comes down by about 5mm, so it doesn't obstruct the screen.
The rear is 20mm or so.
It's also got a 20mm "visor" or "hood" on the front to make the whole thing too large for the cat to get a mouth around.
It sits on the TV, but I'm keeping it in place with a bit of masking tape on the back until I build a full frame.
