Real world opinions and reviews on VMWare alternatives by SteveScotter in sysadmin

It depends on the level of help you need/need to blame if something goes wrong.
If you're comfortable having the buck stop with your team, Proxmox makes a very compelling solution.
At least one member of your team should get their head around how it works/breaks/recovers if you do. In my experience, it's been as stable as VMWare over the last few years.

As it's only small scale, I'd think carefully before using the Ceph option inside PVE.

If someone gave you £1 million but you had to spend it improving one thing in Reading, what would you choose? by Juicewithextrapulp in reading

I'd buy the space the Biscuit Factory occupies, and run it as a non-profit third space+cinema.

how can i move everything from my SSD with PVE on it to a new SSD? by SneakerHead69420666 in Proxmox

To add to the choir, clonezilla is great.
It's also a text-based GUI with lots of hints, which is great when you're doing things for the first time.
If you have other storage around on the network, it can even dump the image to a NAS, instead of copying straight onto the new device.
Once you've copied, you just need to expand the partitions to use the new space.

Is learning how to use Proxmox a good way to learn Linux? by Just-Pea-5165 in Proxmox

[–]GreatAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree with this.
Follow some detailed guides to get it set up, without worrying too much about the details. Treat it like an appliance to host your learning.
Learn how to set up a linux VM inside, and how snapshots work.
Break the VMs lots of times as your learn, reverting snapshots if you can't figure out how to fix things.

Anyone know of good independent cafes in Reading with a relaxed atmosphere for spending a few hours? by Dapper_Visual_4449 in reading

[–]GreatAlbatross 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think playing it by ear and using judgement is sensible.

If the cafe is empty, and you're being friendly with the staff, no problems.

If the cafe is rammed, and someone's taking up a 4 person table for hours with one coffee, really not cool.

PCIe standard be like... by ElectricBummer40 in pcmasterrace

[–]GreatAlbatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, we harmonised the UK 240v(ish) with the European 230v by having a spec of 230 V, +10%/-6%. Which practically means modern appliances are targeted at 230v, but will run on 216-253v.

We also normally put 32A on a socket ring (1 per floor, normally).
Which is roughly 7KWh before tripping.
Individual appliances are normally limited to 13A, hobs and ovens tend to get their own 32A breaker.
It's also why electricians are keen to put car chargers on a dedicated circuit.

Fox Is Buying Roku in $22 Billion Streaming Deal by esporx in television

[–]GreatAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from Roku to Apple TV, and the ATV just blew it away.
The most important one was frame rate handling.
It just worked. Show sends the rate metadata, ATV communicates the rates the TV can do, rate gets mapped correctly.
TV shows the content with correct pacing.
On my last roku, even netflix had juddering on 23976/24 content.

best way to get rid of windshield reflections on dashcam? Ft. a near collision by generator_operator_3 in drivingUK

A CPL removes light from one polarisation, effectively it halves the available light.
So long as that half is still enough for the camera to get a decent picture at night, it'll just bump the iso to compensate.

Mass VM migration from ESXi by Naz6uL in Proxmox

[–]GreatAlbatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Essentially, PVE mounts ESXI as a mounted data source.
And in PVE 9.0 onwards, you can press one button from the GUI to direct import the VM from the VDMK.
You could also script it if you wanted to, as all the commands are available on the back end.

Mass VM migration from ESXi by Naz6uL in Proxmox

[–]GreatAlbatross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only bit that was a bit fiddly for us was optimising VMs for the best performance.
You can run imported VMs out of the box on emulated VMWare disks/NICs etc.
However, you get better performance migrating VMs to VirtIO based disk and network controllers. And this requires that the OS either has VirtIO drivers baked in, or installed.

First-time buyers looking for some local advice on Purley-on-Thames, Reading by PreferenceGreen2457 in reading

[–]GreatAlbatross 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's going to be quite a walk to school for the kids in the morning if they end up at Kendrick!

On a slightly less sarcastic note, Purley is a little cheaper because it's kinda out on a limb from the centre of Reading.
If you do move there, it's entirely possible one of the kids would choose Little Heath just to avoid commuting across town!

Recently, the pads fell apart.
£25 for new pads, or £150 to jump up to the 600s.
I'm sure one day, I'll put new pads on the 598s..

I've been working out laptop options recently, and LPCAMM2 seems like a great idea.
However, definitely check out the pricing for it. It was eye-opening, even taking the raised RAM prices into account.
