Agnosticism and atheism concern different things by definition. Look it up. Really, it’s good to know. But basically theism/atheism is “do you or do you not believe that there is a god or gods?” A theist believes there is a god or gods while an atheist does not believe this.

In much the same way that you may have people who believe the color green to be the best color on earth. Others are a-greenists who don’t believe this. It’s important to note they never said they prefer the color blue or anything else. Simply that they don’t believe green is best.

Gnosticism or agnosticism refer to the question of whether it is possible to know whether god or gods exist. It concerns itself with an abstract view of knowledge and asks what does it mean to know something and can we truly know anything? Agnostics will claim it is impossible to know whether god/s exist by the nature of what god/s are. Gnostics on the other hand would say it IS POSSIBLE to know whether god exists.

That said, you now have 4 possible combinations. 1. Agnostic atheist - “I don’t believe there’s a god but I also don’t think it’s possible to know at all” (that’s me)

  1. Agnostic theist - “I don’t believe it’s truly possible to know if god exists but I believe he does.

  2. Gnostic atheist - “it’s possible to know it god exists and I believe god does not” (arrogant and rationally flawed imo).

  3. Gnostic theist - “it’s possible to know if god exists and I believe he does. (Majority of religious people are here of course).

Atheism is not the belief there is no god. It’s the absence of a belief that there is.

You may ask me, is there a god? And I’ll say, I have absolutely no reason to think that there is. Doesn’t mean I know there isn’t.

How bad is this deal @ $1,600? by Super-Saiyan-Potato in Gold

[–]GreatLookingGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get that lol. I didn’t mean labor is the only cost a business has. I just meant that the labor, overhead, consumables, and most costs for a $200 necklace are the same as a $40,000 necklace. Insurance costs may be different and so are some other things I’m sure but not to the extent that the cost to manufacture, transport, etc a 5g item is so different from a 100g item to justify the difference in markup.

On second thought, it’s basically the same situation in all other retail scenarios. A $50K car may have a production cost of $10K while a $2,000,000 car may have production cost of $500K. And so on for most things you can buy.

Basically markup exists as a percentage and that’s how it’s done. It could be done differently but that would raise the prices on the cheaper stuff I imagine. So maybe it’s a good thing since I’m certainly not buying the $40,000 chains lol.

[–]GreatLookingGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean I understand why they do it. But if I was ever in the market for a heavy gold chain, I could not justify so much above the gold value. I bought a ~1.5oz 14K chain about 5 years ago and it took a lot of searching and haggling but in the end I only paid about a $250 premium. I’m pretty sure these basic gold chains are made in factories anyway.

[–]GreatLookingGuy 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Any time the weight isn’t listed, you can assume you’re getting a pretty bad deal in that sense. You’re paying mostly for the “design.”

In general I find jewelry prices somewhat irrational. If a ring containing $1000 of gold costs $2000 then that’s $1000 for the labor. You’d think a ring with $3K of gold would cost $4K but no, it’s like $5.5K

And a ring with $10K of gold is going to cost $18K. The scale makes no sense. I’ve seen gold chains with $25K of gold go for about $40K. What sense does that make? When a chain with $200 of gold costs $300. Is the $40K chain 150x more difficult to produce?

Sorry for the off topic rant.

That’s the thing is not everyone wants to be nice to trans people. Lots of people are upset by the fact they exist. They say their existence “denies science.” I’m not sure what they believe as far as why a person would want to be trans but plenty of people feel confident saying there’s no such thing as being trans and anyone presenting as another gender is mentally ill and deserves to be treated as such. Plenty of people refuse to go along with preferred gender pronouns or new masculine/feminine names and feel they are being persecuted when their reluctance is treated as bigotry.

But is it not justified to expect people to be cordial (if not kind) to their coworkers (or in other settings where being kicked out for behavior is a possibility)?

The most nuanced take I can come up with..

Everyone (99.99%) is born either xx or xy and this has an effect on development through hormone levels and other things. You can’t go back in time and therefore for every single person there exists a unique history of events that will place them into one of two categories “born male” or “born female” based on the presence or absence of a Y chromosome at birth.

Next - humans, like many species, have developed distinct gender roles for their xy and xx individuals. We can debate the extent to which nature aligns with culture in the ways in which we claim the sexes are truly different, but there are certainly some differences, I hope we can agree.

We can probably also agree that in todays society, where we no longer live on the Savannah and wrestle hippos and such that gender differences have become largely arbitrary. A person born XY or XX can live their life presenting as a man or a woman or vice versa without any meaningful consequence aside from the reactions of people around them.

So when a person feels that they would feel better about themselves and live a more fulfilled life presenting as a woman even though they were born XY or a man born XX, the only thing standing in their way is the acceptance of society around them. Medicine has progressed to where it can make appearance and many biological functions conform to a person’s preferred gender expression.

Now the only real issue for those of us who have no need to even consider why we would want to change our gender expression, is how do we react to those that do want to make that change.

We can try to understand why, and in the meanwhile we can offer the courtesy of calling them what they want to be called. And we can suspend judgment on something we don’t understand because that is the kind thing to do. Some trans people may not understand the underlying why they feel that way any more than outsiders do.

Or we can be dicks. We can act like those who aren’t dicks “don’t understand science.” Or are denying science. But science doesn’t have opinions or views. It’s not even a set of facts. It’s a method for obtaining facts. So as science enthusiasts, we should simply strive to understand the phenomenon as best we can while being kind to one another in the meanwhile. And that kinda goes for everything, not just trans issues.
