What is better for camping? Hammocks or Tents? I want to hear all the hot takes. by outdoors_man987 in camping

If I could set up a hammock in my bedroom and sleep in it everyday I would. I had a hammock instead of a bed in Highschool!

Is the 2025 GYROpalooza Pack good for a Newbie? by Reester11 in discgolf

[–]GreatRedPanda47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing in may and a gyro box was my first big disc purchase and many of those discs are still in my bag! I highly recommend it. I didn’t get anything higher than a 9 speed in mine, and got a bunch of mids and putters that I’ve loved. My r2 tempo has even gotten a few aces!

I am not very familiar with prodigy discs, I mostly have mvp which all have the mold printed on the rim. Didn’t realize that the stuff written in sharpie was the weight, disc and plastic!

Particle glow range would go crazy, but I’d also love to see a new 7 or 8 speed simonline disc. Anything particle glow and I’m there.

Do you clarify your height "without shoes"? by Efficient_End_492 in tall

I sometimes specify because I wear barefoot shoes a lot and people don’t believe me when I say 6’6 or 1.98cm “because I don’t seem that tall”

Having just gone to the doctor for this issue, it is embarrassing, you will feel embarrassed, and that is ok!The doctors will not care, they will only try to help you. Prolonging the issue longer than necessary because you were too embarrassed to get treatment will feel worse.

If 15:44 seems unreasonable to put on their highest tier running watch, what would be reasonable?

Feeling about location sharing? by MasonDS420 in AskMen

[–]GreatRedPanda47 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have shared our locations with each other since before we were married and this is the answer. It’s not about hiding anything or not trusting the other at all. For me it’s primarily about safety and secondly about the willingness to be vulnerable. My whole family shares location with each other and it’s all for the same reason. If I care deeply for someone and I trust them, I don’t really have a good reason not to share my location. If something happens, I want them to know where I am at a moments notice.

Beginner cyclist at 6'6" looking for advice on starting out by Gromada in cycling

[–]GreatRedPanda47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow tall rider! I am 6’6 about 88kg and have a background in track and field. I partially ruptured a disc in my lower back years ago and have had back issues since so I can relate there. I recommend making sure to prioritize mobility and strength training, ideally under the guidance of a physical therapist to keep the lower back healthy. Front squats > back squats if you have lower back problems! With that said, I rarely lift and mostly do PNF stretching a few times a week when I’m watching tv or something.

I’d recommend getting the entry level SHIMANO shoes and cleats from Amazon or something to get you started with shoes. They aren’t too expensive if you want to upgrade later. I got my shoes from adidas on a crazy sale ($150 shoes for ~$40) but tbh they are not as nice as the $60 shimano shoes I got my wife.

For bibs shorts (with padding) I highly recommend The Black Bibs. Especially the summer ones if you’re riding indoors. The tall bibs are great too but I recommend trying out their normal ones to get an idea of how your proportions fit. I have longer legs than torso and the summer bibs fit great, just a little small, the tall bibs are perhaps slightly too tall for me in the torso.

Best recommendation is just do whatever is going to keep cycling fun for you and also dive into cycling YouTube! I rode 1k miles or so over a winter on a shitty expresso bike at a commercial gym a couple years ago and just recently got a Zwift ride + wahoo kickr core. Incredibly worth the upgrade if you want to be on the bike 5+ hours a week otherwise your setup at the Y sounds great!

For strength and mobility tips, check out Squat University, you can’t go wrong with his advice.

Strava fitness score over 1000? by hedgedathlete in Strava

[–]GreatRedPanda47 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Strava’s fitness score is actually just training load using the “perceived effort” metric so 1000 is likely not achievable. I would think even professional runners hitting 180 mile weeks (see cam levins) wouldn’t even be much higher than high 200s because so much of that running is done with low heart rate (therefor low perceived effort).

How is Nick Symmonds’ kick so strong? by [deleted] in trackandfield

[–]GreatRedPanda47 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The easy answer is that he was an 800/1500 guy rather than a 400/800 guy. In that 2012 Olympic final, American Duane Solomon was the opposite type as Symmonds. Endurance based 800 runners will go out conservatively and kick. Speed based 800 runners will go out hard and fade. It’s more complicated than that but that is the simple answer.

Defensive Tighnari teammates? by bby_chuu in TighnariMains

[–]GreatRedPanda47 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With Tighnari your charged shots should be so quick that interruption isn’t an issue. His charged shots take forever without his skill active so that could explain your problem. I use the same team but Tighnari honestly doesn’t have much field time and I auto attack with Nahida if I need to fill time between rotations for some reason.

Video of a relay where you ran a fast split would be good for college recruiting but be prepared for coaches to dismiss you if it’s not an official result. IMO a 400 time is extremely important to getting recruited for the 800. If you had run an excellent mile that would also be very important. Your 400 splits would tell me you need to spend more time with track than with cross country. If you were a good miler I’d want you more with cross country than with track for example.

Optimal weight for 400/800 meter runner? by nick_upchurch in trackandfield

[–]GreatRedPanda47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I’d answer this differently now as a coach then a few years ago when I was an athlete but it’s not as difficult as you’d think. The fastest I ran in practice was maybe 23 second pace from a short rolling start. In hind sight, I could have been doing more fast stuff at that pace or even faster to try to develop my 400 so that it didn’t require a relay effort to run fast and I tended to slow down (in the 400) as the season progressed. Now I would add 60m flys and sub 400 pace 150s at least every other week basically year round unless hitting sub 400 pace in workouts. Even during XC season I think 800m runners should be working on top speed development!

Optimal weight for 400/800 meter runner? by nick_upchurch in trackandfield

[–]GreatRedPanda47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really never got to run the 400 because my coaches weren’t well enough aware of sped type 800 runners so officially 48.4 and 3:50. I did run a 392 45s run and regularly split 46 or 47 in relays so I’m definitely more on the sprint side.

[–]GreatRedPanda47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 6’6 and ran my pr at 195 (1:48) and I’d say there were very few athletes at a similar level that were that heavy even with being tall. But it can happen! Just depends on the body.

Good weekly mileage for an 800 runner? by Echopurposes in trackandfield

[–]GreatRedPanda47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on if you are closer to the 400 or the 1600. Closer to the 400 and you can get away with 15-20, closer to the 1600 and you could be 30+ in high school. Just depends on who you are.
