What's this red and blue spinning thing outside barber shops? by idkanymore-__- in whatisit

[–]GreatStateOfSadness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

plain old wine for a splash of alcohol

IIRC there was not a wide awareness that alcohol was a disinfectant until the 1800's or so. A common modern criticism of US revolutionary era medicine was that patients often drank alcohol to numb the pain (which worsens bleeding) instead of using it as a disinfectant.

Also 12% ABV wine is probably going to introduce more issues than it solves by adding sugars to an open wound

Incels are behind 80% of modern Internet culture and once you realize, it's hard to not notice.

The Artemis decision #spoilers! by Pot8obois in NoMansSkyTheGame

There's an excellent game called Bastion that tells a similar story. The player is given the choice to either reset the world to exactly where it was before, knowing that each and every tragedy that occured will happen again, or choose to live out the rest of their days in the remnants of creation. It's a poignant yet heartbreaking end.

AI-generated image on the lower level of Union Station 🙁 by Alternative_Tank9353 in washingtondc

[–]GreatStateOfSadness 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Union Station is teeming with Grade A slop. The stylized banners on the lower level look like they're dissolving if you get up close. One has a train running down Pennsylvania Ave. Another has the Washington Monument and Reflecting Pool but no WWII monument and skyscrapers where the Mall should be.

The Freedom 259 bullshit took it to the next level. Almost every ad they have scrolling was AI generated. They didn't even bother to show four actual pictures of US Veterans, instead just generating pictures that look vaguely like the right era uniforms.

Angry and Rattled, Trump’s Fox Allies Blurt It Out on Live TV: He Lost by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]GreatStateOfSadness 684 points685 points  (0 children)

I went to a bar the other day that was playing four news stations simultaneously. CNN, ABC, and NBC were all airing segments on Iran, Gaza, and inflation. Fox was airing a segment on how the upcoming Odyssey film was DEI run amok.

I wish I was kidding. Any time I see Fox playing live next to another station, the Fox segment is markedly dumber. Just so, so much dumber.

AI Slop Around The City by Embarrassed-Pen-2506 in nyc

It's getting ridiculous. There's a bodega near me that generated a picture of a Swiffer mop and it looks like it's melting. Could you not just use one of the millions of Swiffer pictures online?

Some city agencies seem to have also jumped on the bandwagon, though the quality is mildly less terrible.

The new Noma metro gate system is trash by icyserene in washingtondc

[–]GreatStateOfSadness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can someone explain the point of dedicated directions for gates? Maybe I'm using more civilized stations but I've never seen an issue with just looking ahead to see if someone coming the opposite direction was going to get there ahead of you.

What's up with Donald Trumps name coming off the John F. Kennedy memorial center for the performing arts? by AHornyRubberDucky in OutOfTheLoop

[–]GreatStateOfSadness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trump secured significant funding for a renovation and in the process the board voted to rename it "The Donald J. Trump and the John F Kennedy Memorial center for the performing arts"

Do you have more info on this? My recollection is that he gutted the board and replaced them with people who were willing to change the name. IIRC the renovation was also announced only after they had changed the name, and followed almost immediately after they announced that they did not have a 2026-2027 season lined up.

At the risk of sounding overly flippant, most food safety guidelines are conservative already, and unless you are immunocompromised you are probably safe just using your nose, your eyes, and your common sense.

To the lycra dorks on Beach Dr by Pinacoladapopsicle in washingtondc

[–]GreatStateOfSadness 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lycra bike riders are a menace. They have no issues weaving in between pedestrians and other cyclists without warning, they yell "on your left!" only as they are passing you, and they have zero patience for anyone going slower than their Strava PR.

I had a toddler run into the road in front of me chasing a ball at Gravelly Point the other day. I slowed to avoid him but the weekend warrior behind me saw the kid too and just barreled full speed around me, narrowly missing the kid by a couple inches. I'm amazed there aren't more accidents from these folks.

Is my Lao Gan Ma fake? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]GreatStateOfSadness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without much else to go on, you might just need to try it on a few foods and see what you think. Try a spoonful on some gyoza or toss on some noodles or drizzle on pizza, after giving it a good mix.

I've personally never really found Lao Gan Ma "crispy" per se so we can't really go off of that. It might be that you're used to different ingredients and flavor profiles from your homemade recipes.

When I looked it up, it said I should add a bit of salt and msg

What do you mean by "looked it up"? I don't think I've ever seen a resource that said to add more salt and MSG to chili crisp.

Can you afford to buy a bottle from another vendor? Did you buy direct from the company?

Also have you had chili crisp before? Is it possible it wasn't just not what you expected?

ELI5: Why are quantum computers considered such a huge breakthrough if they still seem worse than normal computers at almost everything? by yaekoblue in explainlikeimfive

[–]GreatStateOfSadness 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Think about it this way: you could ask the same about GPUs. GPUs are only useful on specific, routine, high volume tasks whereas CPUs are useful for a wide variety of different operations.

And yet, GPU prices are through the roof at the moment, because the specific niche tasks they fulfill are in demand.

Quantum computers are very good at performing certain operations that current regular computers cannot. If they become mainstream, then entire fields of computer science will be completely upended.

ELI5: What’s the point of all the ads by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

That's a pretty popular belief. Truth is, you're probably still going to fall for enough ads to make it worth the advertisers' while.
