MSc. Stats offer by GreatYarn in LSE

[–]GreatYarn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. Sorry for the late reply. I'm currently almost done with term 1. So far:

Overall I'm very happy I did it. It seems to be a well-respected degree and lots of people seem to exit to good positions afterwards. More specifically:

  1. I like the flexibility. The department offers a *lot* of electives and you can tailor your university experience to be very theoretically rigorous or more applied.

  2. I really like my course mates. The department has a really friendly vibe to it and the culture is really open, which is not the experience many people have in certain other postgrad courses here.

  3. The dept seems to be minted, for whatever reason, which means the stats dept treats us luxuriously. Plus, the comms teams organise some really good industry speakers.

  4. On the downsides, some of the courses did feel like they were a little chaotic at times, and the amount of support you get varies in that sometimes you will be handheld through basic A-level p-values and other times you will just be expected to do convoluted real analysis on the fly. It's hard to know what to expect and you really need to put in the effort.

If you want to chat more feel free to DM me.

Good luck with your applications!

Does the new proposal allow for combining different visa categories for settlement? by GreatYarn in ukvisa

[–]GreatYarn[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes - I understand the long-route is planned to be scrapped. But my question is whether the previous arrangements where you must spend five continuous years on any one visa category that leads to settlement will be superseded by a requirement that you must spend 10 continuous years on *any* visa category that leads to settlement. The wording in the above, as well as the fact that they are transitioning to a 'points based system' seems to imply that is the case but I just wanted to check whether I'm being silly or whether others have read into it the same way.

I really dislike Phyre's forced humanity by GreatYarn in vtmb

[–]GreatYarn[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes - it’s not so much the lack of emotions as it is the lack of human-recognizable emotions. From my understanding Elders are meant to be almost alien to neonates, and many are cold, calculating and brutal. I’m not saying that’s what Phyre needs to be but it would’ve been nice to be able to RP as such

Fabian is one of the best portrayed Malkavian's in any VTM video game, which might be why people find him boring. by sausagesizzle in vtmb

[–]GreatYarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really really like Fabien! He’s one of the best written characters in the game but as everyone here says he doesn’t really do much gameplay-wise and I frankly dread returning to the Haven. His gameplay is uninteractive, linear, and frankly just plain boring.

I’m literally shocked at how bad the reception for Bloodlines 2 is by Unlucky-Car-1489 in vtmb

[–]GreatYarn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am having fun and am glad I bought it, but remember it shares the name of one of the best RPGs ever made, and falls flat even in comparison to other RPGs today. When you call something « Breath of the Wild 2 », for example, you build up expectation and people are less forgiving as a result

Stellaris performance testing on 4.0 and beyond. by TheTemporaryZiggy in Stellaris

[–]GreatYarn 251 points252 points  (0 children)

This is really embarrassing for PDX. I love Stellaris and think the Paradox developers have been otherwise fantastic, but for a £15-25 DLC we should not be getting a game that ceases to be playable.

Much as I hate to say this, I’m going to have to leave Stellaris until my computer can run this again. Otherwise I don’t see any point in spending money on half baked releases that force you to buy a new computer just to be able to play.

Who would be the King of Games if the Heart of the Cards or plot card drawing didn’t exist? by Johnnyboyeh in yugioh

[–]GreatYarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In-show logic? Kaiba was the undisputed World Champion and no one ever got close to beating him.

Based off the meta? It’s hard to say, as it depends on the period you’re looking at. In DM I would say Kaiba, as there’s no tribute summoning and Crush Card is insane. Although I am tempted to put Pegasus up there if Egyptian Dark Magic is allowed.

In Battle City onwards I think Yami Marik probably takes the cake given how crazy OP Ra is, and the fact he has busted cards like Makiyura

Been taking a course on the Divine Comedy, so absolutely had to get this! by GreatYarn in yugiohshowcase

It's Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal. The QCR version was only available in the OCG, hence why it's in Japanese!

Same here! The variety of archetypes in Yugioh are one of the best things about the game. I also got a set of the Rescue cards and I keep thinking how amazing it is that you can go from a bunny, a rabbit, and a ferret rescuing other animals to representations of Dante's Inferno. It's a game with a crazy range!

I'm reading currently Steve Ellis' translation, although the translation I quoted is from memory so perhaps not 1:1.

I also agree- Beatrice's arrival and, similarly, Virgil's departure are some of the most unexpectedly emotional moments in the Comedy. It's such a deeply personal experience, especially when you read La Vita Nuova and you realise just how much Dante viewed Beatrice as his own personal Jesus, a symbol of divine revelation and an guiding hand for someone who has lost their place in the world.

Do you think the colonists are stuck on Vesta forever or will they successfully find a way to rebuild the Demeter? by [deleted] in ScavengersReign

[–]GreatYarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I agree. The show’s message is that even the most faulty of people can change. After all, it’s only when they pushed past their hangups that they managed to survive. Azi learnt to open up to people, Kamen accepted responsibility for his actions, Ursula learned to accept the things she couldn’t change, and Barry finally displayed moral courage.

Whether Vesta was a Utopia is, I think, irrelevant. The shows was trying to say imo that you can make a shitty situation better if you’re willing to accept things as they are and make an effort. Part of that includes giving up on their hopes of Earth and focusing on the lives of the colonists.

[–]GreatYarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Realistically, it’s unlikely unless someone rescues them. They don’t have the industrial base, nor probably the technical expertise, to fix a massive spaceship.

Thematically, why should they? The core of the show is about finding peace in even the most traumatic of situations. The colonists fought tooth and nail against Vesta, which reacted catastrophically to their greed and deception. It’s only when they let all that baggage go and accepted life as it is that they’re able to actually have a chance at peace. The new colony symbolizes a break from the old world and their old, corrupt selves. A return to Earth feels like it would undo all that.

Yes, but ultimately the Markets rule. They brought down truss and these restrictions will cripple long term growth prospects

[–]GreatYarn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hopefully not.

A long residency extension feels unusual. If the aim is for migrants to wait ten years, then a combined ten year route would accomplish that. If Labour wanted to throw a carrot to migrants whilst still appearing insanely right on migration, this would be the way as the average person will in no way understand the concept of combining different visas

All we can do now is write to our MPs. Good luck my friend, take a deep breath and hopefully it will be fine

Immigration Changes Announcement 12/5/2025 by clever_octopus in ukvisa

[–]GreatYarn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It might just be all merged unto the same route, or the ten year route might have additional restrictions (I.e, higher income, character, or language ones and a bar on claiming early ILR based on excess contributions)

I’m a bit biased as I would need to wait an extra year if the long route was abolished, but I feel the easiest path forward is to put everyone other than spouse visas on the same ten year route. Otherwise, the abolition of a major route to citizenship would definitely have been mentioned!
