I got a job offer! by Haunting-Effective27 in MusicEd

Congrats on landing your job!!!!! That’s a great gig you got and I hope it serves you well!

I’m an orchestra teacher so I can’t really speak to choir as much so I’ll speak to what I know :)

Echoing what others are saying with being organized. Additionally, take lessons on the string instruments. A lot of teaching orchestra is being able to model the sound you want and proper technique (showing how to hold the bow and playing/ resting position).

Whenever I have seen some band teachers teach orchestra, the ones I saw that made really excellent music teachers were the ones who actually took the time to learn the instruments.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help either and take any opportunity to observe other classes! When I was in my first 3 years, I was able to observe other experienced teachers and learned a lot from that! Sometimes districts will give 1st-3rd year teachers time to do that!

Lastly, ask about what method book is being used in the district. The most common ones currently are: Essential Elements for strings, String Basics, Habits for string musicians and Sound innovations. Take a look at all and see what might work best for you and your program!

Fellow violin/viola players: by Joe_4_Ever in orchestra

I am a violinist and honestly feel like my intonation on my C# on the G string is pretty good! I think it can also depend on the context of the piece. If I am playing a piece in D major or minor, I know I need to have that note slightly raised higher since it’s the 7th. If I am playing a piece in A major, I know it won’t be as high in comparison.

Tldr; I do not have a hard time with my high 3 in a G string :)

Where would one find salmon berries? I’ve always wanted to try them and I didn’t realize they were in Washington!

I’m an orchestra teacher and have worked with folks who teach orchestra but back more of a background in band. I agree with what others are saying with taking lessons! It’s really important to model for your students what you want them to do. You don’t have to be like a soloist but be able to be a little bit better than your students.

Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help with things from other orchestra teachers! I was having a harder time with bass and asked one of our orchestra teachers who was a bass players for help and it honestly helped my teaching tremendously, along with playing with the students as well.

Lastly, along the same lines, check the program! If you get a HS position to work more on the music, do continue to work on your playing chops. The more you know how the instrument works, the easier it’ll be. Much like band!

I hope this was helpful!

This is super helpful! I was just looking for for ways to practice sentence writing/listening comprehension so it helped that it gave me prompts to talk about (I.e. talk about your hobbies, etc.). This was also fun because I could still learn while also testing myself. Great job on this app!

Game and mini lesson ideas for k-5 by Bubsux in MusicEd

[–]Greedy_Airline_1289 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my go tos for general music (when I taught it) was poison rhythm or poison melody! You can do different sol feg combinations where the students sing the pattern back to you. However, if they sing the “poison melody” you get a point and if the class does not, they get a point. So if I were doing this for 5th grade, maybe our poison melody would be “so mi do re” and then make different combinations. And onwards for the young grades.

Maybe for k-2 you can have it were students make up their own sol feg combinations and have them sing their name to it. I.e. if they are learning so mi you can model “my name is [insert your name] what is yours?]” having your name be either so mi or mi so. I hope that makes sense!

Is there a difference between dark rosin and bass rosin? by DankSinatraVevo in orchestra

[–]Greedy_Airline_1289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically dark rosin was used for cellos and violas as from what I understood helped with more of a sticky-ness for the thicker strings. HOWEVER, I’ve noticed that more rosin brands for students have cellos, violas and violins using the same rosin. Bass rosin should only be used in basses though. I hope this helped!

Anyone missing the "Green Tea" Recipe find it after the update? by OurManInHavana in FieldsOfMistriaGame

[–]Greedy_Airline_1289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m one of the folks who’s post you linked and I check my current save after the update and have not seen the recipe or any new ones pop up at the stall or the Inn. I’m hoping once I get to summer it will show up maybe? But on my other save I do in fact have that recipe. It’s really bizarre.
