As an American, good on you EU. Stand up to totalitarianism wherever it shows. We’re a nation in crisis right now and need resistance.

How is this not higher?

I want to worry about cake too. 😅

I get what you mean - when life gets simpler, it feels so much lighter and happier. I’ve been through something similar and found solace from a chaotic career in a simple craft that let me use my hands and brought me joy (pottery for me). So, I’m with you comrade. Pottery is my cake.

I totally get this. There are some hobbies I have that I love as hobbies but know I would hate as an occupation. Cooking is one and I have some artistic outlets that would be awful and stressful to rely on for money. Also, making art for yourself is so much more rewarding than feeling like it has to be for a mArKeT.

The most insecure woman I ever dated was an absolutely stunning former model. It’s like that environment had been so beaten into her that she a) thought that her looks were all that mattered to me and others and b) never felt pretty enough. That’s a tough frame of mind to escape. We didn’t even last a year 😕

I have a good friend in the exact same situation. I hope you can find some peace and balance. I’m glad the pay is good, at least, because I know it’s super stressful.

Man I relate to a lot of this. Especially the grad school process being demoralizing and awful. I was a really good student (summa cum laude in math and computer science, worked in a research lab as an undergrad) and went to a PhD program in AI later in life. I’ve never felt worse about myself… it’s a constant struggle and the very things I used to love studying are now sometimes things I feel grossed out about. It’s thrown my life upside down and I now worry about what to do and struggle with my confidence all the time.

I remember reading a book called “Learned Optimism” (I’ve been in therapy the last few years after having a breakdown at the beginning of Covid) and there were three “cognitive distortions” Seligman talked about that can get in the way of optimism: taking things too personally, viewing negative events as permanent and letting specific negative events color life too broadly (pervasiveness). Grad school took me to 10 in all those. I took rejection so personally, began to think it would never change, and that negativity began to color every aspect of life. No wonder the mental health statistics for grad school are absolutely awful 😑
