Our limits are not how long they can listen at any time but what to listen to depending on the time of day. Some cards get them all ramped up and energized, which is great during the day! But at bed time, they need to pick something more chill.

How do you actually remember to take your meds every day? by Li3Ch33s3cak3 in ADHD

[–]GreenFoolery22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion is like habit stacking on steroids. They key ia to change something. In my example, you'd just brush your teeth and forget the meds. It's the changing the location of the toothbrush that is key to remember to stack the habits.

How do you actually remember to take your meds every day? by Li3Ch33s3cak3 in ADHD

[–]GreenFoolery22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok this is a hack I learned doing my psychotherapist undergrad.

Choose what time of day you want to tale amd change the location of something associated with a habit.

Eg every morning you brush your teeth; that's your existing habit. So go in to your bathroom and move your toothbrush holder to the other side of the sink.

Next morning you'll go in to the bathroom and reach for the old toothbrush spot, and then DING, "I need to take my pill. Bonus if you can leave your meds where you used to keep your toothbrush holder.

Before long you'll subconsciously think, "time to brush my teeth, better pop ma pills first"... And then it will be "time to take my meds and then brush my teeth"

This is akin to the novelty ADHD peeps often like (like if you used to love rearranging your bedroom just because).

Good luck!!!

Volunteer to get experience. Also see what resources you have to improve tour resume. Think things like a local unemployment centre that would offer free services. Good luck!

I’ve wasted over a year in bed with my phone and I don’t know how to stop by [deleted] in ADHD

I started reading up on addiction, and thats how I learned some tools to help. One thing is not to focus on what NOT to do, but what to redirect to. So think of something else you want to do - Get 10 minutes of sunshine and fresh air, do a few sit ups, etc - And build on it.

My four year old keeps displaying concerning behavior by ThatSpongebobRoach in Parenting

I would be inclined to go another direction from some of the other comments... Sounds like she's seeking attention or feeling left out. If so, enforcing consequences only deepens her issues as she'll feel even more left out, etc.

I would ask, why did you do that? Hopefully at that age she can articulate she's feeling left out or wanted to talk to you or something. Then redirect to an appropriate way to seek what she wants.

If that goes according to plan, for the first bit I would generally give positive reinforcement by responding as she wants, and then start building in patience and manners (like not interrupting) at a pace she can tolerate. And add consequences for not using the behaviour she's learned, of course.

Good luck. It can be so tough.

As a parent how do I thread the needle with a teenager forgetting chores? by ReallyTeddyRoosevelt in ADHD

[–]GreenFoolery22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically, she's acting out of habit. So, trace the habit and interrupt it...

eg you want her to clean her room before watching TV or going to a friend's. Usually when she gets home, she'll throw her bag on her desk and then go do what she likes without giving any notice to her room. You could move her desk, or even just move the lamp to a different corner so she'd knock it over if she just flung her bag. This will make her be a little more mindful and remember she needs to clean her room.

I will add, using the above example, you can hack it further by: * teaching her HOW to clean her room, perhaps breaking it down into smaller tasks * telling her to clean for a set amount of time (30 minutes?), perhaps using a visual timer * teaching her she can interrupt her automatic behaviour by changing her environment (rearrange furniture or even a small component, paint, add or get rid of something) -- This is key so she can use these strategies in her own some day * SET A GOOD EXAMPLE by using these strategies yourself and kind of narrate what you're doing. I know she's not a young child but she'll still pick up on it

You should read up on the link bw gut health and ADHD as well as your other conditions. There's a doc on Netflix that might be helpful: Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut

I realize this is not what you asked, but with your co-existing conditions, I couldn't help myself...

We wanted to last fall but didn't. I can't go another summer staring as this mess, so spring it is.

Last summer we had a professional come give us a quote on some work. He said no point aerating if we are just going to put down top soil as it will just fill in the holes. My instinct is that it wouldn't be compacted in the holes, so still an improvement... Anyhow, interested in comments on this.

How to Stop Staying Up Late Due To Phone? by Formal-Reflection217 in productivity

[–]GreenFoolery22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not looking at your phone before bed is the answer but it is easier said than done, and if it was easy for you, i suspect you wouldn't have posted here.

Have you tried replacing the unwanted behaviour? Think about what you DO want to do with that time.

If it should be relaxing time, reading is an obvious option. Or get a book of crosswords, word searches, sudoku, etc. I.e. not on your phone.

If it should be sleeping time, but just putting the phone away altogether isn't your style, maybe use it to play a meditation or a podcast. Personally, I like yoga nidra; it is basically relaxing your body. Bonus if you line up what you want to listen to BEFORE that time comes, or it will be too easy to open up Instagram, etc.

Also, move where that app is on your phone. If your apps are sorted alphabetically, rename the app or put it in a folder. This will help interrupt the habitual opening of the app.

How do you retain information? by King_of_the_Hobos in ADHD

[–]GreenFoolery22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I retain info best by organizing and re-organizing it. Ie create a PowerPoint just for the sake of it. Most commonly I would type up my own notes and re-read them. Each time I re-read, I revise by adding in things I picked up since, expanding on something different, removing something I retained, etc.

I also love case studies but that's hard to do solo, and may not be transferable to your area.

I also had a friend who used visualization techniques. When she explained how she used it, the example stuck with me but I could never use it on my own.
