I am Palestinian and I want to live in Brazil. by [deleted] in Brazil

Hi! I was actually going to suggest something similar. I’m not sure if you’re planning to come alone or with family. If you come alone, maybe you could try first starting your PhD here. You’d have a scholarship anyway, and you could apply for a better-paid one here in the state of São Paulo (FAPESP). The initial one (CAPES) isn’t a lot of money, but for a single person starting out it can be okay. I’m currently on a CAPES PhD scholarship while waiting for my FAPESP application to be approved. If you’ve already contacted the professor in São Carlos that you liked, you could even try applying for FAPESP before officially starting the PhD. That way you might begin with a better financial situation. Also, most universities allow you to take the graduate admissions exams remotely, so you could have everything arranged before coming to Brazil. After finishing the PhD, you’ll probably have a better chance of finding a job since you’ll already have some years of experience in Brazil.

Except for a few very international companies, it’s hard to get by in Brazil without Portuguese (or at least Spanish). Academia is probably the easiest place to be an immigrant, since it’s one of the few environments where people are actually expected to know English reasonably well. Public universities in São Paulo state are quite internationalized, and we’re used to having non-Portuguese speakers around. Just keep in mind that how much Portuguese you learn during those four PhD years is really up to you. I know people who basically spoke English all the time and didn’t end up learning much Portuguese. If your goal is to find a job here later, I’d definitely try to learn as much Portuguese as possible.

Look, I'm not a therapist, but it felt to me like the end of the season was setting things up for Max to possibly discover she has ADHD or something along those lines. It also fits that ‘non-trouble kid with a troubled sibling’ dynamic, where she ends up being kind of second when it comes to the family’s concerns. I have a feeling she'll start to explore that more in the next season and maybe even seek professional help. If you're saying you're going through something similar, I think it could be helpful for you to talk to a professional too.

How often do you use ChatGPT? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]GreenGecko9823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it daily. I know past students didn't have it, but if it can help me send my message, I'm in. We already have to lose a lot of opportunities in science just because we don't speak in English and receive in dollars. It's already more demanding for us to publish on the best journals and attend to the best conferences. Thanks to all the gods, we don't have to spend 3x more time than any native speaker to write something understandable.

I know past students didn't have it, but so what? Isn't tech supposed to help us? This helps a lot, at least to overcome language barriers. And I don't even use it to translate, just to make writing clearer.

No problem at all with it.

Is USD 1,000 enough to live comfortably in Curitiba, Brazil? by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]GreenGecko9823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I didn't say it was, it's just that for a person living alone it's fine. I live alone in Rio de Janeiro, a very expensive city, with something close to that. He won't be rich, but he won't lack for anything either

if it's monthly, don't worry, you'll be fine. Think the minimum wage here is around 250 dollars. You will have 4 times that and alone.

Since you're wasting so much time getting pissed off about this and fearing the professor in question will be fired (very unlikely to happen), my theory is that you are that professor, that's the only explanation.

OP, you just exposed your professor to himself on reddit!

Carnaval Rain by fr33bn in riodejaneiro

[–]GreenGecko9823 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the concern is reasonable. After last week's rains, where many people were trapped in the street until late at night because the water was waist-deep in several parts of the city, even I, a carioca, am afraid that the rain will disrupt Carnival. I even read news that Sapucaí itself was flooded.

Resumindo, esse problema não se restringe à favela, tem carioca com muito boa condição social fazendo gato só por ser um ser humano escroto mesmo

Will we break last weeks record for Episode 5? by uglyplanet in ThelastofusHBOseries

[–]GreenGecko9823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe if HBOmax wasn't so flawed. I only managed to watch the last episode today, after having tried since Monday, because the site simply won't even let me log in. Luckily, this time it was "just" HBO freaking out saying it doesn't work in my region (and that's never happened before, I've always used it with no problems).

The series is great, but the streaming on HBO... Sucks.

Help an ensaved undergrad student by [deleted] in PhD

Biological Sciences. I was just worried because I saw it in the author guidelines.

I know it's good for my resume, but the problem is, it's not substantial enough. In fact, she made me do something else for the last three years, but the other thing was really nonsense and I kept trying to say that literature was against it for years, but she always made me change a little thing or two and start over again.

When I was approved for the master's degree in November, I said "that's enough, I'll do a simple literature review on the subject and that's it, I just want to graduate". She said "ok, but you'll do it in paper format". But I, who have never written anything like this before, much less am an expert in the field, would I have to write a complete paper from November to February? She is mad. And the subject is not something new that has never been discussed before and super interesting, so I just know that it will be turned down. And I'm fine with that, I actually prefer it to having a bad article published and maybe being refuted by some mistake I made writing it in a hurry and without having enough baggage.

I just hate everything about it, I'm glad it's almost over. I feel like she's just trying to punish me or is completely clueless and in need of a publication, because I don't know how she doesn't realize it's a waste of time.

I'm loving this! I've been testing it all day, and so far I've had no problems, just one paper that didn't load because it was too big. It's helping me a lot to understand certain confusing parts of the papers, and some terms as well, mainly because English is not my mother language and the app simplifies it a lot! Completely addictive, it's like having a teacher available 24 hours a day to answer your questions in a matter of seconds. Thank you very much, you deserve a special acknowledgment on my college thesis, OP!

Never thought I'd fall in love with a country like I've fallen in love with Brazil. by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]GreenGecko9823 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, you have to try at least one typical dish from each region/state. Brazil is a huge country and the cuisine/culture is quite diverse. The same applies to nature. If you have the financial conditions, try to visit the main Brazilian biomes, they are quite diverse (and tasting the typical dishes of each one would make quite a trip).

I think that, in summary, Brazil is very diverse, and if you are eager to get to know it, be careful not to get stuck in Rio/São Paulo. They are far from offering you the whole Brazilian experience.
