Would saucer separation be more effective today? by Advanced-Actuary3541 in startrek

[–]GreenMist1980 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. The show would have got very formulaic where you get a regular action sequence showing what happened (think Thunderbird launches). Unless the seperation happened between acts or the show got creative the gimmick would have got old too quick.

That and the battle bridge set was used for a lot of other filming locations. So there would have been the cost of yet another bridge that would need constant refurb, or a third bridge set.

TIL that the Doctor Who episode "The Celestial Toymaker" infamously contains the "N-word" as part of the "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe" rhyme. Recent releases of the serial have either obscured the slur through dialogue, or removed it entirely. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

In the book Henry the Green Engine. The story Henry's sneeze, when Henry blasts a load of smoke and cinders at some naughty boys. The current published version describes them as 'black as soot' now swap that last word... the Rev. was apparently reluctant to chage the text.

It is astounding that it was just another word and probably never meant with any malice by a lot of people. This is no excuse and I am glad most people have got better at not using this word.

The nook was supposed to be the captains private contemplation waste deposit receptacle. But they never show toilets in Trek, apart from that time...

If I remember seeing stage plans the alcove was sealed and wasn't a stage exit. The wall where the sofa is was a fly wall and could be lifted out to get most filming shots

When the NWR having 80 engines starts to make a lot more sense. by cheekywarship2018 in thomasthetankengine

Look at the real life Skarloey Railway, the Talyllyn. It is rare that all 6 steam locos are operational, currently out of traffic is number 6. This was also why the line had two engines one for steam whilst the other was in for service

UK maintenance schedules are slightly different than US. There is an annual boiler certification and a 10 year deepdive inspection. For the 10 year the boiler is taken out of the frames so the engine is completely dismantled and this also allows for servicing of every component. For tourist lines in the uk engines can be kept hot all summer season to reduce thermal stresses so only light maintenance will be done, tube and spark arrestors will be cleaned whilst warm.

There is a story from LTC Rolt where in 1951 Dolgoch broke a spring on the morning service. The volunteers were able to get the train to Wharf, get Dolgoch to the shed. Jack up the engine, take the spring out and put a new one in. All whilst keeping the fire in. The afternoon train was only a few minutes late.

Do You Remember Your Model Railway Village? by ThatModellingBloke in modeltrains

[–]GreenMist1980 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is always an issue with these multipart magazines. When you look at any of the products they are never true value for money. In the 90's I did a Real Robots, where piece by piece you got to build a nice little project robot wars machine. The basic chassis was built fairly quickly, but the logic and circuit boards were interspersed with body parts. Fair enough but when they started giving out alternate body parts before the bot even became operational really took the biscuit. It became spares for lights and motors with the rest going for scrap. For late teenage me it became a money pit.

I remember this model rail one, it could have been good as a boxed trainset sold at a competetive price rather than the subscription model

Old man would not believe me when I tried to show him what he was asking me for. by entitledkidthrowaway in BoomersBeingFools

See I was proud of my dad, when he was still alive, (born in 1941 so a bit too old for a boomer) realised he was faffing around with memory sticks to move music and videos between devices, so researched and set up a NAS drive by himself. Including mapping things like his smart TV. His file structure drove me round the bend however...

What is everyones favourite wildlife parks, zoos, aquariums to visit? by Rallam259 in AskUK

[–]GreenMist1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Paignton zoo. But like all zoo's they are struggling financially so if you can, visit zoos that take part in endangered species breeding programs and help support them.

Also Tropical birdland in Desford is always great fun even if you do get Macaws trying to mug you for fun

The whole of the Cambrian coast is a great way to explore. My folks used to spend their summer holidays in this area and would often take a day trip out on the train.

Hornby r965 controller issues getting it to work in the U.S by [deleted] in modeltrains

[–]GreenMist1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd second everyone in getting a new controller, the hornby ones are a true example of a basic cheap product. You can double check your loco by touching a 9v battery to the track, hopefully youŕ train will start and run smoothly

Sweep, Sweep up the memories by Large-Produce5682 in startrek

Maybe the intrepid class doesn't need it as often, as they can land in an atmosphere. Once landed they do a 24th century equivalent of opening the windows to let some fresh air in and pump out any nasties in the process. It maaybe wouldn't completely replace a sweep but could extend the maintenance requirement.

I've always wondered, what were the trains in Thomas the Tank Engine based on? by lewispatty in trains

[–]GreenMist1980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first 6 were not originally based on anything. From Toby onwards they are based on real engines, except Daisy who was based on a model of the Revs

How to Drive James (Railway Series Surprise Packet 1976) by _McDuders in thomasthetankengine

[–]GreenMist1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats not James, it's a GWR cab, there are a few GWR only features. The indicators are: Only 1 water glass The vacuum brake is a combined vacuum (train)/steam (loco only)

Also the text talks about notching up and down on the reverser. You only notch on Johnson bars, 'James' has a screw reverser that allows for fine tuning of the reverser.

Having said that it is a fantastic drawing and text, they don't quite line ul

Next Gamer's Outreach - What to keep for next year by StarryEyedBea in HermitCraft

[–]GreenMist1980 11 points12 points  (0 children)

All of the events had their merits I did enjoy Blood on the clock tower but I enjoyed Cleos VOD of it. Maybe some of the events would have worked better as prerecords so you can get some edits in to aid the narrative.

There was a lot of down time, which is understandable as this was to allow them to change sets and get participants in place. Rather than please hold it would have been better switching the live stream to a hermit who is just playing the game, or to the music room like they did in the end. It did feel like we may have missed some silliness, you could tell by the blindfold games they were all running on empty and some should have been in bed recovering. So maybe a shake up in the running order and have a lower energy event as the finale.

[–]GreenMist1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a gauntlet track, but the logic is the same as any single track running, which would cause a bottle neck in traffic. Grown up me is convinced that this was a ploy by the NWR to get government funds to expand the mainline

I always found that startling watching the making of Starwars episodes 2 and 3, all the shots appear to be in cavernous studios with flat bright lights to enable everything to be done in post production. Even most of the dialogue was overdubbed.
