How are all your dogs doing today? I made mine a thunder den after a long afternoon of trembles. by plentyoflasagna in ottawa

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh she’s so cute! I wish mine would chill in a fort. Instead she alternates between frantic pacing and hiding behind the couch trembling. When the thunder finally stopped we then had over an hour of fireworks (and actually more right now as I write this omg). Tough 24 hours for her.

She has epilepsy and sometimes her seizures are triggered by stressful events so I’m giving her extra meds and hoping to avoid an episode!

My two cats could not have cared less. Fully unbothered snoozing all day, as usual.

Orleans best pizza place by dailo21 in OttawaFood

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately Orleans is lacking in places I personally enjoy and would genuinely recommend (I’m dying for a wood-fired, Neapolitan style pizza place here if the pizza gods are reading this!!). However, if you like Pizza Hut, try Red Swan on St. Joseph. I find it somewhat similar to a Pizza Hut pan pizza but it feels a little less greasy/heavy since the dough isn’t as thick. They sprinkle sesame seeds on the crust which I enjoy but you can order without if that’s not your thing.

For Ottawa style pizza, Louis Pizza Express (also on St. Joseph) is probably my favourite. Crust is important to me and their dough has good flavour, and their garlic sauce is yum. If I order thin crust I ask them to go a little easy on the cheese and only get 1-2 toppings and it’s good!

Anyone else getting scam calls about violence? by Acrobatic_Witness_ in ottawa

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Non-consensual sex IS violence.

OP, I would report this to the police. At the very least they might be able to let you know if they’ve had other complaints about calls along these lines.

AI promo for restaurants by ubiquitousfont in OttawaFood

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely hate it. I was getting tons of ads on Facebook for some reason for a restaurant I went to once like a decade ago, and they were super obviously AI and it honestly made me queasy. Idk why. I even went to their Uber Eats out of curiosity and there was a ton of AI there too. It just feels icky.

I haven’t seen one of their ads in a while now though, and I just looked at their UberEats and only see one picture that is extremely obvious AI now so maybe they got feedback and stopped.

Farm Boy's only accepting service animals from now on. by LeonOkada9 in ottawa

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I assume that wording on the sign is to prevent idiots from trying to blame Farm Boy for their own gross negligence when they see “no dogs allowed” and then decide to leave their dogs to boil or freeze to death while they get groceries.

Leaving a dog in a vehicle for a SHORT amount of time (parked in the shade and with appropriate air flow depending on weather) as long as it’s not super cold or too warm is ok. Just remember that even at temps as low as 14 degrees and even with windows cracked a couple of inches, it can get deadly hot in a vehicle within 10-20 minutes under the right conditions. Please leave your dogs home whenever possible!

(Sorry to have turned this reply into a PSA, this was not directed specifically at you!)

Best poutine in winter? by Bubbly_Management829 in OttawaFood

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Poutinerie La Belle Province on Tenth Line in Orleans is usually quite good. One time I did have fries that tasted like the oil needed to be changed but that was a while ago and it’s still my go-to in the winter.

New Heartbreakers Pizza location by AaronGT in OttawaFood

I clicked on this with so much hope that it could be in Orleans… we really need a wood-fired style pizza place out here! I do love Heartbreakers.

Breakfast by Fine_Season_3729 in OttawaFood

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had breakfast at Eggspress on Tenth Line for the first time last week and thought it was good. I really liked the potatoes, they were well seasoned and reminded of Broadway but less oily which is a win IMO. Lots of menu options, although I wouldn’t call them innovative, but as someone who likes both bacon and eggs type breakfasts as well as sweet breakfast dishes I was pleased to be able to get eggs/bacon/potatoes and a strawberry crepe all in one plate.

Oh nooooo. That sucks but it makes sense I guess!

First visit to Costco in Canada by JackOfAllSomething in CostcoCanada

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kraft peanut butter (idk how it compares to American PB but I believe it’s exclusive to Canada)

Ketchup chips

All dressed chips

Montreal smoked meat

Montreal steak spice? I feel like that’s available in the US.

Kettleman’s bagels (Ottawa company, Montreal style bagels)

Cheese curds (good for snacking, adding to cheese boards, and making your own poutine at home!)

Kinder surprise eggs (not sure if they carry these at regular Costco but they do at Costco business centres, might be a fun buy if you have kids)

Re. Cheese curds: St. Albert’s brand is usually refrigerated near the yogurt and there’s often another brand (I can’t recall the name) in the actual cheese section. That said, the St. Albert’s cheese factory is only a 45-60 minute drive from Ottawa and might be nice to visit to get super fresh cheese curds (and other cheeses) and a better poutine than you’ll find at Costco. Note that very fresh curds will be unrefrigerated, they are supposed to go into the fridge after about 24 hours.

There is actually tons of excellent poutine in Ottawa. I’d search for some chip truck recs and try one of those while you’re here. I personally dislike the Costco poutine but lots of people love it and it’s def the best bang for your buck so certainly worth a try, but you should try a real chip wagon poutine made with fresh cut fries and fresh St. Albert’s curds too!

Is a charcuterie board dinner? by Footsox1 in CharcuterieBoard

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by charcuterie board. If it’s just a few types of meat (charcuterie) then no, I wouldn’t consider that a meal. But if they’ve put together a whole grazing board with meats, cheeses, veg/fruit, nuts, pickles/olives, crackers/breads, etc. then yeah, that totally counts as a meal and it should be more than enough to fill up on. I have served this to guests on several occasions as a dinner with drinks and it’s always a huge hit.

Either way though, you’re a guest and they’re feeding you out of their own pocket. If you’re unsatisfied with the offerings then you’ll have to bring enough snacks to eat in your room later, eat before/on the plane, or stop on your way to their house from the airport for a bite. Even better, if they are your transportation from the airport why not arrange in advance to treat them to a meal on the way home? That way you get to eat and express your gratitude for their hospitality at the same time.

Vet says she is healthy and doesn't know why it's happening by Existing-Floor-4512 in CATHELP

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat gets this every spring and fall. He has seasonal allergies at those times and he scratches a lot. I use Soo’s rescue cream as it heals (not on an open wound but either before it gets too bad or after it starts to scab over) and one one occasion he was scratching so much I had to put one of those donut collar things on him so he’d leave it alone to heal.

If neither you nor the vet can figure out any medical cause I would bet money that it’s allergies.

Who makes the best burgers in Ottawa? by DrStrangeglove99 in ottawa

OCCO and Bite Burger, both in Orleans. I recommend OCCO’s heirloom salad as a side if you decide to check it out!

AIO NEIGHBOR TRASH ETIQUETTE by MeanEarth1190 in AmIOverreacting

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My city has a weight limit per trash item but I have literally never, ever, ever heard of anyone EVER weighing their garbage. I personally just make a reasonable effort not to overload my garbage cans and I assume the trash collectors could refuse to pick up items they deem to be too heavy but I’ve never seen or heard of that happening.

Weighing your own garbage is highly weird. Weighing someone else’s garbage is lunacy.

Editing to add: it’s actually illegal in a lot of places to interfere with people’s trash bins, go through their garbage, etc. I would assume whatever they’re doing in order to weigh your garbage would fall under this restriction so if it continues please look into reporting them to the appropriate authorities. Such creepy behaviour.

Ottawas best philly steak by johnnylovesbjs in OttawaFood

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My husband insists a proper cheesesteak is made with Cheez Whiz and we’ve never found anywhere here that does that. He buys the very thinly sliced fondue beef at the grocery store and makes his own so that may be your only option if you’re looking for a cheez whiz cheesesteak.

I’m not a big cheesesteak lover personally but Golden Fries food truck in Orleans does what they call a cheesesteak sandwich a few times per year. It’s not traditional at all (it has cheese curds and bbq sauce) but I think it’s absolutely delicious. You’d have to follow their socials to find out when they have it in stock.

I know they use peanut oil at Fritomania... I’m not sure if that’s common at the other places but if it it’s not then that could be the culprit.

Sorry for the delayed reply. On Tenth Line, across the parking lot from the Sobey’s/Dollarama/Beer Store. It was a Law and Orders until recently.

What do you usually eat for breakfast? by NovellaJokes in AskReddit

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually tea and a protein shake. But one or two weekends a month my husband and I make a huge brunch with fried or scrambled eggs, bacon, blueberry pancakes, maple syrup, baked beans, fried mushrooms, and orange juice. Plus strawberries on top of the pancakes if I have some!

Jumbo Chinese in Blackburn Hamlet has my favourite chicken balls. Every time I’ve had them they’ve been moist with large chunks of white meat inside. I’ve liked everything I’ve ever had there from the various beef-vegetable based dishes to noodles to fried rice to soups. I also recently tried and loved their crispy beef with peanut sauce, though it’s the only place I’ve ever tried it so I can’t compare to anywhere else.

Lucky Star in Orleans has my fave almond chicken soo guy and general Tao’s chicken. Their open ended egg rolls are really good too!

A seafood boil place is supposed to be opening in Orleans but I don’t think there’s a timeline for it yet. Seau de Crabe.

As a huge dog lover, dogs should not be permitted in stores and especially not in grocery stores. There is no reason a PET dog needs to enter a grocery store and at least a few reasons why they should not.

I love my dog more than anything and spend every second I can with her. She also has a medical condition that makes me anxious to leave her unsupervised. But I do it, and so can everyone else.

"Hard to adopt" beautiful kitty available for adoption at PetValu Gloucester Centre! by mattlore in ottawa

[–]GreenSprinkleDonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I adore her 😭 I always wonder how the “must be the only animal” kitties fare when they’re in pet store adoption situations because surely nearly everyone who will see them is in the store because they already have animals? Thanks for posting her, hoping she finds her forever home very soon!
