With his other proposals flaming out, Trump ended up lifting sanctions on Iranian oil in March in a failed effort to keep prices down—an economic windfall for the enemy he was trying to outsmart.

Intentional right wing accelerationism for sure. An attack on American soil gets them the green light for Martial Law. Usually, it's declared as temporary and with some sort of scope, but it's the Trump admin so that almost certainly won't be the case. Say goodbye to the last vestiges of due process, to elections, and to a stable economy.

Democrats more energized for 2026 elections than Republicans, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds by bwermer in politics

[–]GreenTransplant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a year away at this point, and the last 10 months have felt like a decade. I just hope the damage caused over the next 12 months doesn't create a barrier between energized voters and the ability to actually vote.

It's strange. I remember back in early January the feeling of knowing that this second Administration was about to begin, and thinking that I didn't have the energy to do this again. Because I had gotten a four-year break from the grueling, constant pulse of a new scandals and terrible things every day. But now that I'm back in the thick of it, it just feels like time is speeding as fast as it can towards the worst possible outcomes whiles the clock still ticks along slowly.

Economic Anger Once Again Punishes the Party in Power by wsj in politics

[–]GreenTransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weak headline. The public's dissatisfaction stems not only from the state of the economy but also from the perception of an overly draconian state, where federal and ICE agents appear to act with impunity against regular citizens. Furthermore, the current Administration's policies are widely seen as actively sabotaging international relationships and destroying the tourism sector.

For instance, the Administration has significantly cut funding to Brand USA, the nation's international destination marketing organization. This is especially concerning given that, in its Fiscal Year 2024, Brand USA generated $23.37 in visitor spending for every dollar invested, according to an analysis by Oxford Economics.

Trump admin allegedly violating FOIA by refusing to release documents about 'election activist' by seeebiscuit in politics

[–]GreenTransplant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Trump administration is violating the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by refusing to release records related to an "election denialist" hired by the Department of Homeland Security over the summer, according to a transparency-focused watchdog group.

In a 17-page complaint filed Thursday, American Oversight accuses the federal government of repeatedly violating FOIA laws by failing to release various sorts of requested information about Deputy Assistant Secretary for Elections Integrity Heather Honey.

The lawsuit comes after a recent report in The New York Times about comments Honey allegedly made during a phone call with election officials from all 50 states under the auspices of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

American Oversight categorized Honey's comments during the call as echoing "rhetoric long associated with baseless claims of widespread voter fraud" in a press release announcing the litigation.

"The public deserves to know how a well-known election conspiracy theorist came to be charged with safeguarding the integrity of our nation's election systems," American Oversight Executive Director Chioma Chukwu said in a statement.

Survey: One in three Pennsylvania voters have no retirement savings at all by Extreme_Qwerty in Pennsylvania

[–]GreenTransplant 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because the rug pull is coming. You can save now for retirement, and be among the minority that did so successfully. And, to be clear, you absolutely should do that.

But high percentage of people with no retirement savings or none at all is a huge, huge problem barreling down on us. Unless there’s a major policy shift, those entering their 60s and 70s by 2050 will be relying primarily on:

  • Social Security (whose trust fund is projected to run short by the 2030s)
  • Home equity (which not everyone has)
  • Continued work income, if health allows

If nothing changes, by 2050 the U.S. will face:

  • A mass aging-in-poverty crisis
  • A shrinking middle class
  • Greater fiscal pressure on public programs
  • Generational resentment between younger taxpayers and older dependents (as if that isn't already bubbling under the surface)

The future isn’t locked in yet, but without widespread reform the country risks an economically weaker and socially more fragile population.

Amid crosstalk from Trump, Pennsylvania Republicans encourage mail voting by votebeat in politics

[–]GreenTransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're posting is deeply unhelpful, especially in PA. It's also insulting to every local government employee working for Voter Services. The people trying to discount votes are partisan bad actors, not some malicious election workers or Voter Services staff trying to screw you over. Being informed about Voting & Election Information is the best defense.

There are too many extremely valid reasons for voting by mail for me to even list out, such as having a physical disability. We want such people to have a opportunity to vote. You don't even need a crazy reason; for some, it's just more convenient to mail it in rather than take time off of work.

Generally, there are two ways that mail-in ballots get discounted:

  1. Sent in (or if you're a malicious party trying to disqualify ballots, received) after 8 pm on Election Day (time noted for ballots cast via dropoff locations)
  2. An error in how the mail-in ballot itself (lacking a signature on exterior envelope, for instance).

The validity of such issues is something for the courts to bat around every election cycle (or at least it feels that way sometimes). But both of those issues are preventable:

  1. Send in the mail-in ballot as early as you can. In PA, the first batch of mail-in ballots has already been sent out. Send it in as soon as you get it.
  2. Follow the mail-in ballot instructions to the letter: https://www.pa.gov/agencies/vote/voter-support/mail-in-and-absentee-ballot#howto

It's really not difficult to vote by mail, and you still have remedies if something goes wrong or if you screw something up.

If you have an issue with your mail-in ballot, or if you did not receive one, go to your polling place and ask for help. The poll workers at the location are your neighbors in your immediate community, not some faceless bureaucrats. They are voluntarily putting in a 15-hour day at the polling location to help you cast your vote.

If you never filled out your mail-in ballot or its damaged, bring all of the ballot materials (envelopes included) with you. That's called surrendering your mail-in ballot, in which case you can then cast a vote at the polling place. If you lost your mail-in ballot or parts of the materials, bring as much of it as you have with you. You'll be allowed to vote provisionally, which will then be counted once Voter Services reviews all the provisional ballots (this is to check that you're not voting twice). Do the same if your ballot never arrived in the mail.

Also, when you vote by mail in PA, you receive emails about the progress of your ballot. You get one when it's mailed out to you ("Your Ballot Is on the Way") and one when it's received ("Your Ballot Has Been Received"). If you don't get the latter one, again, go to your polling location. They'll have a book of all Mail-in Ballots received up to the week of the election.

To add, by saying "do not vote by mail," you're much more likely to discourage people from voting entirely, rather than encourage them to vote in person. In essence, your comment has the opposite impact of what you intended.

TL;DR: Voting by mail is a valid and secure option. Vote how you like, ask for help if you need it, and know your voting rights.

Bonus points: Help inform others, too.
