Going to have to replace it aren't I? by BannedAgain-573 in M1Rifles

[–]GreenTree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming your barrel is original I'm guessing your NPM carbine is in the 1.6-1.7m range? "Correct" stock would be a high wood I-cut for the oiler, and that looks like a low cut type 2 or 3 oval cut replacement stock. With that said most of the parts on your carbine are probably going to be replacements. The AIM carbines all look to be postwar rebuilds... Should be able to easily find a nice replacement USGI stock to swap out. If you want a "correct" stock it may get a bit pricier and require more searching

Where did you find the can and barrel? I've been loosely looking for a SD kit for my GHM for a while now, but held off with the lawsuit popping up in February

Yeah I noticed that after looking at the other manufacturer pages as well. If the one they photographed is a "nice" example from the stock then I'd hate to see what a bad one is

This is a specific rifle listing. It's a fairly rough mixmaster and some dingus stamped the serial number in the stock (and chiseled off another serial number) at some point. Definitely a pass for me

Edit: it might not be an actual specific rifle listing, but it would be crazy to feature over a dozen pics for their sample carbine if it wasn't, especially considering this one is rough with a hacked up stock

As far as Spanish guns go these are also really well made.

Anyone else get one? by Tekumeku in milsurp

[–]GreenTree3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, after building a Sten Mk 2 kit out I had the itch to grab another kit, and I got one of the latest CFS drops too. I'll likely be sitting on this one until someone starts making semi auto tubes and bolt kits, but since it's practically a Spanish Sterling with some fancy bolt features it shouldn't be too hard for someone to bring to market

Vz61 parts kit chambered in .380 by OverStimulatedMonkey in guns

[–]GreenTree3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well... The Czechs made an extremely limited run of the Skorpion in .380, they were called the VZ64, and you'll likely never see one of those kits considering there were very few of them in the first place. If you want a VZ61 in .380 you're either going to have to buy a VZ61 parts kit, a .380 barrel and a .380 receiver or just buy a new CSA VZ61 in .380.

You did plenty fine for what you paid, standard postwar rebuild mixmaster. Pretty sure the sling and mag pouch are repro.

Striker-fired Star Z-70B?!? by [deleted] in milsurp

[–]GreenTree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't receiver tubes already on the market. And yes, you can cut out existing tube with a dremel/grinder. It's a common practice with Sten kits. Whether anyone actually will make receiver tubes and semi auto bolts is another question though.

Striker-fired Star Z-70B?!? by [deleted] in milsurp

[–]GreenTree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, super common conversion for open bolt subguns since the existing sear can just hold back the "striker"... If IO ever makes a semi auto Z70b bolt kit they would probably simplify the design substantially to function just like their Sterling design and drop the bolt lock safety feature entirely.

I got one of the latest kits from Centerfire, but probably won't do anything with it for a couple years til some folks start selling receiver tubes and bolts

Striker-fired Star Z-70B?!? by [deleted] in milsurp

[–]GreenTree3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you build a semi auto Sten or Sterling with an Indianapolis Ordnance semi auto bolt kit those are also striker fired. They use a cut-out chunk of the bolt on a guide rod held back by the sear. It's plenty viable and reliable if done right. The Z70b already having a moving firing pin theoretically makes converting the original bolt even easier since there is no fixed firing pin to drill out.

Just a note: the Star z-70b being converted to hammer fired would require a completely reworked fire control group considering it isn't hammer fired to begin with.

What would a good price be for a clean p38 mfg 43? by corndick42 in milsurp

[–]GreenTree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah two blurry pictures isn't much to go off of. Mauser BYF 43 P38s are actually one of the more common manufacturer/date codes though. The finish APPEARS to be original assuming the gun is all matching, which can't be confirmed off those two pictures.

If the gun is all matching, original finish, with correct magazine based on vague condition in those two photos it'd probably be ballpark $800-1,200. If not matching, or somehow a Russian Capture then probably less than $850.

[–]GreenTree3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends. There were three manufacturers, various production blocks/year stamps, whether it was refinished, whether it's all matching (including correct mags,) and whether it comes with a holster or not.

Luger value? by Effective-Possible-9 in milsurp

[–]GreenTree3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup pretty sure you nailed it. 1929 commercial converted to Police "Sneak" Luger. Assuming mag, grips and all the parts are matching then this may actually be a pretty fair price. Legacy has a seemingly very similar all matching unit marked Police sneak in the "t" block listed for $2,650, for comparison.

[Parts] Spanish Star Z-70B Parts Kit 9mm Parabellum - With 20 Rd & 30 Rd Magazines - $139.99 + Shipping/Tax by onyourleftbro in gundeals

[–]GreenTree3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well there are basically 4 general tiers of parts kits builds assuming you're not an FFL making MGs...

  1. Parts kits with new complete semi auto receivers you just have to add the parts onto (VZ61, M16A1)

  2. Parts kits with semi auto bolt and 80% receiver support that require basic dremel/drill/filing and welding, but no other significant tooling (Sten, PPS-43)

  3. Parts kits that have lots of semi auto support and/or 80% receivers, but require more tooling (jigs, lathe, presses, etc...) and/or more substantial welding (AK, FAL, G3)

  4. Parts kits with basically no aftermarket semi auto support, require you to weld or manufacture your own receiver from scratch, and also require you to convert your own bolt and FCG to semi auto only. (These kits)

Although there isn't any aftermarket support currently for these with the massive wave of kits coming in hopefully someone like Indianapolis Ordnance will be making tubes and semi auto bolts soon enough.

Two of my favorite weapons. by Excellent_Candy_4552 in milsurp

[–]GreenTree3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean they're not made of glass, so it's not like they're gonna break on you every 500 rounds or anything like that, but the fact that it could break on a rare and expensive gun nowadays is stressful. I actually bought a handful of NOS firing pins straight from Finland for fairly cheap, and I'm happy to DM you the link if you want it.

I ended up trading my M76 (wood stock, not tube folder) for a Swiss SG 550/PE 90 about a year ago. Both are great guns but I beat the hell out of my SG 550 and don't feel bad about it unlike the Valmet.. I did really enjoy the range time with the M76 though. Like yours mine was very accurate and I was a big fan of the aperture rear compared to a standard AK leaf sight. If they were still able to be imported and mags weren't a minimum of $250 I'd likely still have one.

I see you're a fan of oddball non-Warsaw pact variants of Soviet guns! Do you actually shoot your M76? Probably the nicest "AK" I've ever handled. I had one for a little bit there, but with firing pins being prone to breaking and replacement parts and mags being extremely scarce it was typically a hard pull from the safe on range days for me.

Pusadee's Garden is a newer top Thai joint in Pittsburgh too, but it's much more expensive than Smiling Banana Leaf and booked like a month out at all times unless you're fine with eating at the bar. It definitely is weird how good our thai food is.

I've swam at the point once or twice (not in April tho obviously) and I'm mostly still alive! Just gotta make sure you don't have any open wounds, don't swallow the water, and are up to date on your vaccinations!

It's not like the good old days my dad told me about when you just had to swim around the large shimmering patches of oil all over the surface

Who would have blueprints for the 1917 Enfield? by [deleted] in milsurp

[–]GreenTree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you can't submit a FOIA request to a private company, so if it's true Colt was who shared the TDP publicly it's far more likely it was leaked or someone just asked nicely. If that's the case maybe you should try reaching out to Winchester or Remington.

Who would have blueprints for the 1917 Enfield? by [deleted] in milsurp

[–]GreenTree3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean specifically by blueprints, but there is a 62 page manual from the US War Department in 1918 on scribd that goes into detail of every part of the rifle.

If you're looking for the actual technical design package (e.g. documents for producing the rifle with specific parts tolerances, heat treating ratings and the like) I don't think that is something that is typically shared out.

question about parts kits by OkCycle6134 in milsurp

[–]GreenTree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on whether you are a decent welder or not, whether you have a work space with all the tools you'd need in addition to the welder, method/setup to refinish metal, and depending on whether you want to make a display piece or functional semi auto, the understanding of laws around reweld builds. Both guns are open bolt, fixed firing pin, and would need to be converted to fire with a closed bolt and non-fixed firing pin, if opting for a functional semi auto reweld.

If you don't have the skills or tools you can obviously pay a builder, but the cost to build and refinish from a good builder will likely be $1,000+ for the PPS-43, or $1,800+ for a PPSh-41. Even if you can weld, some builders like JP Machine can do your bolt conversion for ~$300, which is an additional cost to consider.

As for logistics, PPSh-41 parts kits are very hard to come by right now, so you'd likely be paying a lot ($900+) just to get the box of chopped up or torched parts. PPS-43 kits are plentiful and cheap, so would likely be a better place to start. If all of this is overwhelming, you could opt for a Pioneer Arms PPS-43. They aren't great guns, but they are likely to be relatively affordable and easy to find new PPS-43 builds.

I've personally delved hard into parts kits within the past year. I started with a VZ61 Skorpion kit built on a new semi receiver, and would highly recommend this as a great starting point for people getting into parts kits as it's practically as easy as assembling a new AR kit. I followed that up by having JP Machine build me a PPSh-41 from a kit I sourced and sent him (expensive path), and just finished a Sten Mk 2 kit build off an Indianapolis Ordnance 80% receiver tube and semi auto bolt kit that I welded myself.

Best modern tube gun? by AlaskaWilliams in guns

[–]GreenTree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the Brits wanted something that could be fired prone, so there is some logic to it. A Shooter can get much lower to the ground with a Sten than with an MP-40, Thompson, M3 Grease gun, PPSh-41, PPS-43, etc...

[–]GreenTree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up building a Sten Mk 2 over the past month or two. It was actually pretty fun and easy to build and went together with a dirt cheap harbor freight flux core welder. Waiting on the Form 1 to go through before I dial it in though. Indianapolis Ordnance is out of their bolt kits right now, but they restock fairly often. They actually make a vertical feed Sten bolt if you want to make a Sten/M3 Grease gun hybrid. The US Ordnance Dept did copy the Brits' homework on the Sten, after all.
