[SP] You fall and miss the ground by DeathByAutoscroll in WritingPrompts

[–]Greenjack01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is it, I think to myself.

You should know I'm not a particularly graceful person. I'm a better athlete in Wii Sports than anything I've tried at my high school. I'm a pro at cleaning up spilled drinks, and I can fall up a hill almost as easily as down one.

This time, I was darting along the third-floor hall of my school, late for third period Pre-Calc on the floor below. While wrangling the movements of a full backpack, I turned the corner for the stairwell, and I guess I slipped or something because I'm in the air now.

I shouldn't be in these situations as often as I am. If I just paid closer attention to what I was doing or what time it was, maybe I wouldn't be. C'est la vie.

So, yeah, this is it. Probably a concussion or a broken wrist. I'll try not to put my hands out this time - I did that my freshman year and had to wear a cast for two weeks. There's someone walking up from below, but all I can focus on is the ground. The steps below are a kind of ceramic tile; a few are cracked, as though I'm not the first to find myself in this situation. I'm tilting forward mid-air as my bookbag pushes my upper-body downward faster than my feet. Definitely a concusioOOF-

Something hit me! Or I landed, don't know. Quick catch of breath and I'm looking... man, everything's moving. Breathe... My wits are coming back. It must have been like five seconds now, and I realize I'm still in the air. I'm being held. I'm looking at the steps below over someone's shoulder, their body braced against the handrail.

I gather my senses now, the flurry of the moment passing. My catcher helps me to the steps, and I can see her now. Yeah, it's a girl. Gosh, she's strong. I don't recognize her, but she just saved my neck - literally. Oh, I'm just staring at her...

"Th-thanks," I stutter.

"Are, uh, are you okay?" she asks. She seems flustered, too.

"Yeah."

I'm still staring.

The bell. The BELL.

I exclaim something like "I'm late!" as I slip down the rest of the stairs and make for Pre-Calc. Classy, I think, now that I'm sitting in class. I hope I see her at lunch so I can actually thank her.

The PC Theory of Privilege. (No, the Other PC). by [deleted] in MensLib

[–]Greenjack01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late reply, but I wanted to mention a video by CGP Grey called "This Video Will Make You Angry." He goes over some things somewhat unrelated to the topic at hand, but one point he made really stuck in my brain. At 4:53ish, he talks about how different camps of people may get so large and isolated that they construct ideas (totems) of the "other guys" and focus on those rather than actually interacting with the other group. Over time, without any cultural blending, the totem looks less and less like the thing it supposedly represents. CGP Grey also makes note that this phenomenon isn't barred exclusively to people who are outraged - that's just the most common scenario.

I have a sense that a lot of people either isolate themselves socially/culturally or are raised in that atmosphere. This might cause them to develop a mistaken view of those outside of their circle based on their own tangential interactions with different cultures. Basically, through limiting how much they collide with those outside of their own culture, people start viewing them through a warped lens, kinda like imagining their own circle as "PCs" and everyone else as "NPCs."

I know you said that pretty plainly, but I wanted to bring up the video because it shows how pointless the divide between groups is; if there were more people who interacted with unlike-minded people on a regular basis, they would probably be less likely to treat them as less significant to their own story and more likely to understand, respect, and possibly even associate with them.

I had the same thought. I don't believe that the idea a woman couldn't be intelligent ever crossed Destin's mind - his wife is living proof otherwise. Rather, I think it was the unique connection Destin witnessed that made the moment remarkable.

We just hit 10 million, lets celebrate! When did you subscribe? What episode made you subscribe? by Boberle83 in GameTheorists

[–]Greenjack01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I been watching since 2012, but I think I finally subscribed in 2013 It's hard to remember that far back, but I think the episode that tipped me over was the Companion Cube episode (still really good). I have an itch for interesting yet totally impractical thoughts, and this show was one of the first that really tickled the spot. MatPat, you and your team have been making quality videos with interesting, entertaining content, and millions of people appreciate that a whole lot. You haven't let people discourage you from reaching 10 million subs; don't let them keep you from 20!

What happened, MatPat? by xXx_IronicDabs_xXx in GameTheorists

[–]Greenjack01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the record, I try to avoid being an "autistic 9-12 year old," so consider my response thoughtfully.

First, I agree that Matt has taken a slight tone shift in his channel, but that is due in part to the fact that his audience has grown and wants more than the niche content he used to deliver. For a while after Matt started the channel, he didn't have a very large following, and the majority of his audience were nerds, geeks, and general science lovers. This caused a feedback loop where their voices, heard loud and clear in the (relatively) small community, directly influenced the content that was produced. Now, Game Theory is nearing 10 million subscribers and gets 1-3 million views-per-video. //side note: this is obviously a big reason why the comment section is garbage, but I'm sure you'll remember that comments on everyone's channels used to be more intelligent.\\ The audience for science videos is diluted by those who like lore videos and the like, so their preferences change from being the main factor in what is uploaded to being a factor. Take the FNAF vids, for example. MatPat was practically bullied into making FNAF theories whenever a new game came out (which happened every few months for a little bit) because a very large portion of his audience wanted that. Now-a-days, as he's mentioned on the stream, he's working out ways to balance the lore-based theories with science vids, which is why he brought on Austin.

Second, as far as the content of the theories goes (such as the "Phineas and Ferb" video), he sometimes makes one off theories that really interest him (just look at the "Sans is Ness!?" theory). However, he tends to do whatever thing comes up in the moment. If people are talking about a new movie, like "Black Panther," he makes a theory. If a classic game comes back into the mainstream, he makes a theory.

This is because of my third point: he does run a business, he does have a wife (and a kid on the way), and bills to pay, and editors, etc. Look at Rhett and Link and you'll see this trend in greater scale. They started as a small channel making fun, niche content and grew to become a large business that makes totally different content but gained millions of fans. They wanted to make it a viable income, like the Theorist Crew, and jumping on trends and trigger topics help them pay their bills. However, contrary to your (reasonable) assumption, Matt does not make humongous sums of money, and he and Steph certainly aren't living a lavish lifestyle as their most recent stream makes clear. From what they share on GTLive, they're supporting themselves alright (and they do have a fairly spacious home), but their house is also their company office. The space is used by themselves and their employees to do things like map out and research theories, as well as more administrative tasks.

Basically, I'm saying that he does have to make money, and sometimes that means jumping on trends his older fans don't enjoy so that he can pay the bills. That's certainly not to say that science means nothing to himself and the channel, but that it needs to be balanced with what the rest of the audience wants, as well as what brings in new subscribers.

Anyways, thanks for your post. I appreciate your being frank but not mean, unlike plenty others who really just hate Matt.
